Seagate FreeAgent Go 120GB HDD

Strengths:

Small form-factor; looks cool; 5-year warranty; bundled software

Weaknesses:

Cheaper?

Posted Aug 5, 2007 - This little drive works great! I was wanting portable storage for my laptop, so I could bring ripped movies along on long trips, which I could play on my laptop. Since the laptop is for work, I didn't want to load up the internal hard drive with my personal data. I was trying to choose between the Western Digital Passport, Maxtor OneTouch III Mini and this one, but eventually went with the FreeAgent due to it's bundled software, looks and most importantly, 5-year warranty. It seems the Seagate is a tad more expensive than the others, but I still think it's the best of the bunch. There are a slew of other generic brands out there, but their styling is awful. Seagate has pushed the competition, as WD now bumped their warranty on the Passport to 3-years. There is bundled software on the drive which helps you with syncing data across multiple computers, but I have not utilized that. Same goes for the encryption software. This would prove useful if I wasn't using a work computer.

great portable drive

Strengths:

very portable, good warranty, no need for a power source

Weaknesses:

costs more than 3.5" external drives

Posted Dec 16, 2007 - this drive is very portable and easy to take around to store your music or to back up your files... it's more expensive than the bigger 3.5" external drives, but you make it up for it through the ease of use and portability (no need to crawl around the floor to plug your hard drive into the wall)

Posted Dec 5, 2007 - I got it in a very good price--less than $70. It's small.Transfer speed is fast.When it runs, it's very quite. And it has 5 year warranty from seagate. It's a great product. I like it.

FreeAgent Go 120GB HD - Excellent Drive, Excellent Price

Strengths:

Loads of features, fast read/write speed, small

Weaknesses:

Large orange light

Posted Nov 22, 2007 - This drive is an excellent drive loaded with features that help the person on the go. You can transfer multiple gigabytes of data from your computer to the drive in minutes. The extra features allow you to maintain the drive and change power-saving functions. The large orange light is a little big for me, but fortunately you can turn it off with the software that is included with the drive. Overall, the drive performs above and beyond expectation and is available for a good low price. I would recommend this for anyone who needs quick access to a large amount of data on the go in a small package.

Seagate Drive

Strengths:

Looks nice; good form factor; five year warranty

Wish it were a metal finish

Posted Oct 17, 2007 - I purchased this for my wife's work laptop computer. She oftentimes wants to bring stuff back and forth between work and home, and they are large files. We also want to put movies/music on it in order to take on a trip, but don't want to use the work laptop's hard-drive. It works of the bat, and comes pre-formatted for windows xp. I was able to get it to work with a single usb cable, and not the Y-cable setup. Guess the laptop USB port provides enough power. I have heard that some older laptops have issues. It looks nice, though feels a little flimsy. I wish it were made of the same metal that was used for the FreeAgent Pro desktop models. I reformatted the drive, as I didn't want to mess with the bundled software. Besides, part of the software is a free-trial, and you have to buy it to get it. Overall, I am quite happy. Good value, and it comes with Seagate's five-year warranty.

Unhappy with customer service

Strengths:

Works well and is easy to use

Beware of the Argo add-on program. It's susposed to be a program to ease use of the FreeAgent Go, but instead of the 45 day trial, it locked up my drive in one day.Can't reach tech support. Stinks.

Posted Aug 23, 2007 - Haven't been able to reach customer to get help with unlocking my FreeAgent Go. I loaded the Argo add-on, which was supposed to have a 45 day trial. It locked up the next day and not only prevented me from accessing programs/files transferred usin it, but program/files that were downloaded before I downloaded the Argo add-on. Now, I have programs and files that are totally inaccessible. Stayed on the phone with Customer Service in India for 15 mins and was transferred to tech support who never came on the line for a total of 59 mins over two calls

nice quick slim hard drive--NO EXTERNAL POWER NEEDED!!

Strengths:

small, sturdy, seagate 5yr warranty, no external power needed, good software

Weaknesses:

would prefer more storage, say 2TB in this foot print :-)

Posted Aug 21, 2007 - great product, small, sturdy, 5 year warranty from seagate. does not need external power like larger drives--is powered from the usb port (in some cases on older machines, 2 ports are needed, a special cable with two usb-a ends will work) the cable is included--plug & play, and you can install their software (creedo) to allow applications to be installed on the drive, and automatic backup/sync.

Ceedo is what makes this drive worthwhile

Strengths:

Ceedo comes preinstalled. Decent capacity. Reliable

Weaknesses:

Needs dual USB cable in order to have enough power. Odd shape makes it uncomfortable to carry around in your shirt pocket.

Ceedo is a virtualized application environment that allows you to install standard windows-based applications and connect the drive to any Windows PC, fire up Ceedo, and use your installed applications as if you were sitting in front of you own PC at home or at work. Ceedo supports applications such as Microsoft Office, Paintshop Pro, Photoshop CS3, Dreamweaver CS3, Ulead PhotoImpact, NetObjects Fusion, and more, all without having to modify them in any way, and then run Ceedo and your apps in limited accounts. Ceedo also have a programs directory from which you can install a ton of useful applications, most of which are free. Without Ceedo, this is just another USB drive. With Ceedo, it is like having your computer in your pocket. I would advise anyone who has mobility in mind to buy this drive.

Good Choice

Strengths:

It's very easy to use, flexible and reliable. For a person who travels a lot, it is small and light to carry around.

Weaknesses:

It spins 5,400 rpm, not as fast as the 7,200 rpm model. For Mac guys, you have to reformat.

Great product, decent software

Posted Aug 9, 2007 - This is a fantastic little drive that does a great job of backing up your files in a portable format. You can set it to automatically mirror any folder on your drive, so every time you revise a paper it gets mirrored on your Freeagent Go. Then you can plug it into any other computer and access it quickly and easily. The software does need some tweaking, but overall a great solution for your backup needs.

Great product
