Another example of American companies outsourcing jobs to other countries.

Posted May 28, 2007 - Going to college. Need wifi laptop. Don't know nothin' 'bout computer innards or how to compare good, bad, ugly, etc. Need fast internet connection, CD/DVR read/write capability, and memory/battery/and 'everything else I need but don't know what to ask for' basics. Of course, as poor, starving student, don't have much $ to spend...$500 to $600. What would you recommend? What's a reasonable compromise...what can be skimped? In what areas should I hold firm and expect that I'll need to pay for what I get? I have access to good software packages so don't need that consideration in recommendations. What do you recommend? PLEASE, do your best to explain your answers in standard English rather than computereze. I'm not bilingual and get lost in your country very quickly.

Posted Oct 2, 2006 - Hey, Okay, I'm probably overthinking this, but does this product come with the jumper necessary to force it to use 1.5 Gb/s mode? I'm paranoid that my motherboard's SATA 1.5 Gb/s implementation (it's an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe) may not support SATA speed negotiation, in which case I'd need such a jumper, and since this product is OEM I'm not sure that it comes with one, nor do I know how I would obtain one if it doesn't, so if anybody has any answers that would be great... Now, since this is OEM it comes with no necessary cables, I've heard. I have some cable questions. 1. Are there two different types of connector cables: a 1.5 Gb/s kind and a 3.0 Gb/s kind? 2. If so, what are the effects of using a 1.5 Gb/s cable with this 3.0 Gb/s device? What would happen if the device speed defaulted or negotiated to 3.0 Gb/s but the cable only supported 1.5 Gb/s? Is this even a possible scenario that I should worry about? 3. Can I use a 1.5 Gb/s cable with this EVER, even if my motherboard's SATA implementation is 1.5 Gb/s, or must I always use a 3.0 Gb/s cable? These are probably ridiculous questions, but I'm new to this and don't want to make any catastrophic mistakes. If anyone has an answer to even one of these questions, please let me know! Thanks, SireeBob

Posted Sep 22, 2006 - The hard drive on my computer is......well, full. Music, family videos, photos, you know..... If i buy an external hard drive can i run programs, and play music and videos directly from the external drive? Or are the external drives just basically for backing up files? Also if you could give some advice on what kind of drive to get that would really help to. Right now I'm thinking the Kensington 33214 Silver Series External 80GB Hard Drive would be awesome(mainly because of the price). But i don't know. Please give me some advice here. thanks

Posted Jul 26, 2006 - I'm so new to this I don't even know if my asking in this manner would be considered bad form/wrong, but I'm desperate, so here goes. I would like to be able to download/manage/store digital photos on a Passport. My question is this: Would I be able to install HP software JUST ON THE PASSPORT -- or do I have to put it in with all the other programs on one of the two computers I use? I work in two different states and need to be able to take the photos back and forth with me and I'm not sure I can put what would be considered a "personal" program onto a company computer. Forgive me if the question seems outrageously dumb to you, I wasn't kidding when I said I'm new to this stuff. Thanks in advance for any help!

Discussion of Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB Hard Drive
Posted Apr 8, 2006 - I wanted to report that I was able to install the Momentus 5400.3 ST9160821A 160GB Hard Drive on my Dell Precision M60 laptop, running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, using the entire capacity of the new drive. Seagate has a great technical note, "Windows 137GB Capacity Barrier 48-bit Logical Block Addressing Support for ATA, Serial ATA or ATAPI Disc Drives version 1.0 March 7, 2003" (http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/tp/137gb.pdf), which discusses the 137GB issue and detail. Very well written. My drive came from YesMicro.com. They had to best price by quite a bit at the time. My order was shipped the same day, and arrived by FedEx a few days later. YesMicro did a great job of communication, and provided a FedEx tracking number for me to use. I'd definitely buy from them again. I also want to plug a great backup program that also makes upgrading hard drives a snap: CasperXP from Future Systems (http://www.fssdev.com/products/casperxp). The program is fool-proof. My first backup took around 1-1/2 hours for 90GB+. The backup disk is a fully bootable clone of the original. About once a week, I run it again, and it magically updates the backup drive to mirror changes in my main drive. The process generally takes less than 10 minutes. No proprietary back up formats, and the price is under $50. Highly recommended.

Posted Mar 27, 2006 - After purchasing this drive to upgrade the main drive in my laptop, I learned of the 137 GB size limit for ATA drives. My laptop is older, so this limit is a real issue, causing me to relegate this to an external backup disk and to purchase the 120 GB model instead. I had thought that perhaps I could just put this in my son's laptop, which was purchased in 2005, but his laptop has the same limit. The simple fact is that while this issue is well understood, and the desktop community has worked through this transition over the past couple of years, the problem has not been addressed in the laptop world, yet. Much of the information on the internet is useful, but some of the workarounds do not fully address the needs of laptop users. In any case, be prepared for the possibility of only being able to use 137 GB of the capacity of this drive if you are planning on upgrading the boot drive of your laptop. (I could have used a workaround to make this work at full capacity with my laptop, but the risk of data loss later, due to booting from a floppy or from the Windows 2000 installation disk were too high for my comfort.) Hopefully this information will help someone else make a more informed choice than I did! Regards, Reg
