Excellent all around
Great headphone for virtually every music genre, incredible soundstage and extremely comfortable.
May not be the top headphone for any one specific genre of music. No isolation.
Posted Oct 25, 2005 - The HD-595 is the elite member of the HD-5#5 series of Sennheiser headphones. This series is a compromise between the cold laid-back sound of it's well regarded 580/600/650 series and the warm & agressive Grado house sound. What comes out of this concoction is a headphone that's well balanced, and sounds exciting with just about every music genre. It does especially well with string instruments and female voices. The velour earpads are extremely comfortable and you'd stay comfortable even with hours of wear. The top-notch soundstage of the 595 makes it one of the best headphones to use for watching DVDs. With decent amplification along with a good source, the sound becomes smoother and even more detailed. While the 595 is among the best sounding headphones unamped, if you don't plan on getting a headphone amplifier, it may be a good idea to pick up the HD555 instead. The 595 still sounds a little better than the 555 unamped, but its said that the 100 dollar or so difference isn't worth it. While among the best jack-of-all-trades headphones, it's a master of no one genre. The 595 is a great choice if you listen to a large variety of music. If you listen specifically to just rock or classical, it's said that there are other headphones out there that specialize better in those areas than the 595. One final note. Like most high end headphones, this one must be broken in to sound good. Personally I thought it was absolutely unlistenable for the first 12 or so hours. The bass when you first open the box was unbearably bloated and inarticulate. After around 50 hours it really begins to shine as the sound tights up and becomes much more detailed. Of course you don't have to have the headphones around your ears throughout this time. Just leave it aside and let music run looped with slightly above normal listening volume.
