5 Star Review Excellent all around

Strengths:

Great headphone for virtually every music genre, incredible soundstage and extremely comfortable.

Weaknesses:

May not be the top headphone for any one specific genre of music. No isolation.

Posted Oct 25, 2005 - The HD-595 is the elite member of the HD-5#5 series of Sennheiser headphones. This series is a compromise between the cold laid-back sound of it's well regarded 580/600/650 series and the warm & agressive Grado house sound. What comes out of this concoction is a headphone that's well balanced, and sounds exciting with just about every music genre. It does especially well with string instruments and female voices. The velour earpads are extremely comfortable and you'd stay comfortable even with hours of wear. The top-notch soundstage of the 595 makes it one of the best headphones to use for watching DVDs. With decent amplification along with a good source, the sound becomes smoother and even more detailed. While the 595 is among the best sounding headphones unamped, if you don't plan on getting a headphone amplifier, it may be a good idea to pick up the HD555 instead. The 595 still sounds a little better than the 555 unamped, but its said that the 100 dollar or so difference isn't worth it. While among the best jack-of-all-trades headphones, it's a master of no one genre. The 595 is a great choice if you listen to a large variety of music. If you listen specifically to just rock or classical, it's said that there are other headphones out there that specialize better in those areas than the 595. One final note. Like most high end headphones, this one must be broken in to sound good. Personally I thought it was absolutely unlistenable for the first 12 or so hours. The bass when you first open the box was unbearably bloated and inarticulate. After around 50 hours it really begins to shine as the sound tights up and becomes much more detailed. Of course you don't have to have the headphones around your ears throughout this time. Just leave it aside and let music run looped with slightly above normal listening volume.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

Posted Dec 11, 2004 - This headphone is just great. The sound of this headphone is rich, warm and very detailed. It suits my needs with the best possible music and sound quality. I can hear things in songs that i never heard before, not only doese it sound good but it feels good. They are so comfortable. In short, they are very comfortable. The velour earpads and the headpand are very soft, yet firm. They allow my ears to breath and my ears have never gotten hot even after extended listening ~6-7 hours.

Strengths:

Crisp mids and highs, deep lows, unique design, quality materials, light weight for it's size, headphone holder included, 10 foot cable very convenient when wearing and moving about the room.

Weaknesses:

Sounds a bit muddy - but I still have to properly and fully break them in. The design kinda makes you look like Princess Lea from Star Wars - don't wear them in public!

Posted Sep 30, 2004 - First, I must say that the quality of construction and materials used in these phones is excellent. The phones also come with a 2-year warranty. These phones represent the latest in design and thinking at Sennheiser. The angled drivers are unique design that allows for a much more upfront soundstage - as if you are sitting in the front row of a concert, rather that some rows back. The vocals are crisp and clear, the bass is quite deep and smooth - the best aspect for me. I still need to properly break them in and I am sure the sound quality will get even better. I have them hooked up to my computer, and DVD movies now sound amazing! Playing Doom 3 is an amazing experience as well. These phones benefit greatly from a dedicated headphone amp, but sound quite good even straight from the source. They are a great alternative to a surround sound system when you want to listen to loud music or play games, but do not want to disturb others in the house - playing games late at night, for example. The cans are of the open design category, so some sound will leak out and potentially disturb others who are nearby. But I did not find them to be bothersome or emitting too much noise when I set them at normal volume and stepped back a couple of feet to see how noisey they would sound to others. I use them with my iPod and all my music has been taken to a whole another level! A word of warning, you need a headphone amp to fully enjoy these phones, but they can be used without an amp.

Strengths:

Detailed and well balanced sound, good field positioning, comfortable wearing, recommended for extensive listening to accoustic music without fatigue.

Weaknesses:

Bass could be more compact, highs could be brighter.

Posted Jun 21, 2005 - I have a mixed feeling on this pair of cannons. First of all, I put a lot of expectations on HD 595 since it's really my first pair of headphones, and this 2004 RedDot Design winner represents the highest quality in Senn's 500 series. Also I chose 500's instead of the 600's just because of the ease of driving on portable devices due to its lower impedance level and high sensitivity. I also expected some surprise on my traditional prejudice that headphones are all stubborn. Secondly, the HD 595's open-aire design is really in my preference. Maybe because I never rely on headphones before, I feel awkward if someone tried to speak to me and I had no reactions at all. With 595, I can clearly hear the sound in ambiance. Notice this is not noise, but really you don't want to miss anything such as phone calls from your buddies. Honestly, with those expectations, I had a little dissapointment when I received this pair of headphones. First, I did not find any factory seal on the package, assuming I am getting the real brand-new one. I tried them right away on my portable devices such as Sharp MT 77 MiniDisc Player, Sony portable CD player and mp3 player. The sound is decent, but lows are sort of weak and loose. Plugged into the phonejack on my Yamaha HTR-5750 receiver, I can tell a more solid and detailed sound. Burning these cannons for about 20 hours, lows started to get into a deeper range. With tests on difference types of music, I found them ideal on acoustic music because the sound is so well balanced with proper warmth and sweetness. Plus many details you never realize that much from speakers such as the breath of the performer and frictions between fingers and fingerboard, you can just breathe the music. Vivid sound on cello, trumpet and classical guitar performance. I did not find them surprisingly good on other types of music, however. The main complain is that the sound is not as compact as it could be, especially on the lows. In comparison with my JBL speakers I grow up with, the sound from HD 595 is not quite clean. The pouchy lows lack the carry of proper pitch. This is especially the case when you try to follow the bass in the music. The highs and mids from HD 595 could also be brighter and sharper, this affects the performance on vocal, electric guitar etc. In conclusion, I would expect, do not know if already exists, some frequency crossover on different divers in headphone applications. I also expect these pair of cannon could improve a lot after getting burned for a longer time. A little pricy but well constructed and balanced. Good to keep. Some easily neglected details: Designed in Germany, made in Ireland. Frequency response referenced at -10 dB.

5 Star Review Sennheiser HD 595 Headphone

Strengths:

Light weight, comfortable fit, sturdy construction

Weaknesses:

No volume control

Posted Aug 17, 2005 - This headphone fits on my head so comfortably that I virtually do not feel its weight on my head. I am also satisfied with the rich sound that it delivers to my ear drums. The satin earpads make it even more comfortable. Using the handy hanger that comes in the package, I can neatly hang the headphone on the bookshelf. This makes the stylish headpone more stylish. The only complain that I have is the lack of built-in volume control but it is not a big deal.

3 Star Review Review of Sennheiser hd 595 headphones.

Strengths:

Treble, imagery and comfort.

Weaknesses:

Bass response and cord.

Posted Jul 12, 2006 - I am fairly disappointed in the bass response. The cord twists and tangles every time I use the headphones. They are very comfortable. It is as if I am not wearing headphones at all. The treble is excellent. The imagery is very good. And they have a warm yet neutral sound.

5 Star Review hd 595

Strengths:

excellent sound very comfortable

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Mar 31, 2007 - These headphones have amazing sound quality. The first time I put them on I just kept smiling for hours. The sound is clear and balanced throughout the frequencies. I am not an audiophile, so I may not have the highest standard, but compared to my HD497 which I had before the difference is huge. They are open and do not block the ambient noise, this need to me enjoyed in a quiet environment, but I think this more than outweighs the sound quality.

5 Star Review Exelent first pair of high-end headphones

Strengths:

Excellent sound quality, comfort, and build quality. Sound is very balanced and pure; great bass. I highly recommend this for anyone who is deciding on a pair of headphones in this price range.

Weaknesses:

Um.... Nothing major. Remember that this is an open-can design, so sound will leak in/out of the headphones by design. This provides superior audio quality, but is not for those wishing for isolation.

Posted Feb 9, 2007 - After thorough research an reading some posts at Head-Fi, I decided to purchase the HD-595s over competing models (including the lower priced HD-555) due to the superior audio quality that the 595s are known for. If you are still on the fence about which headphones to buy and are looking for an open-can design for $160-$180, I would strongly recommend these. Coming from $20.00 target specials, the 595s blew me away with their amazing clarity and bass. I can't wait to hear their full potential after they have had more time to burn in. You can't go wrong with the HD-595s, I promise!

5 Star Review Great

Strengths:

Sound. Confort. Looks pretty solid

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Dec 5, 2006 - Great headphones. Especially for the price I paid: around $170. They are very comfortable (they go around your ears, and they have very nice padding - velour earpads). I don't get hot in them. I can wear them for hours without any issue. They excel in treble quality (they go up to 38KHz, but my ears aren't that good)
