5 Star Review HDMI switching and plenty of other inputs

Strengths:

2 HDMI in, can upconvert all video signals to HDMI or keep same output, will show volume level on TV for all source signal types except HDMI, easy setup

Weaknesses:

can't re-name input channels, remote apparently can't recognize my DVD player as a CD player

Posted Aug 18, 2007 - I had been looking at the TX-SR604 for quite some time as an HDMI-switchable receiver to replace my aging Kenwood that was limited on video channels and digital audio capabilities. When the TX-SR605 was released, I decided that the new HD audio capabilities made it worth buying the newer model. I run an HD Tivo unit into a Sony rear-projection LCD bigscreen and I haven't lost any signal quality by passing the Tivo HDMI signal through the Onkyo. There is, however some weird interference on my home theater PC that runs a component video signal (nVidia card) through the Onkyo. When viewing the PC on the TV there are small distortional lines that run up the screen occasionally, which definitely weren't there before. I may have to route the component video straight into the TV if I can't isolate the issue. My DVD component-out signal looks great with no issues. Upconversion is not very noticeable (as expected). I plan to run a PS3 through the other HDMI input when finally dropping the $500 at some future date for the games and of course for blu-ray, so I can't really comment yet on the real-time HDMI switching performance. The audio signal processing in the 605 can handle HD DVD and blu-ray. Setup is a snap, and the receiver even comes with a microphone to setup the listening environment (locations of listeners, etc.) automatically. There are a TON of audio and video inputs that can all be setup via an easy onscreen menu. Weaknesses: I have a non-progressive scan DVD player that I prefer to use as a CD player, and the remote can't seem to take control of this (can probably easily be remedied with a 3rd party universal remote like one of the Logitechs). Some vendors out there have it for $399, so shop around. Highly recommended!

5 Star Review Best Bang for the Buck!

Strengths:

Great look. Powerful sound. 1080p switching. HDMI up-converting from Component, S-Video, & RCA. Room EQ & Volume adjustments.

Weaknesses:

Only 2 HDMI inputs. HDMI signal converting doesn't upscale sources.

Posted Jan 3, 2008 - For the money this has to be the best receiver out there if you want to be able to hook up any source via S-Video, RCA, Component, or HDMI and run a single cable to your TV via HDMI. The sound and quality are on par with Onkyo and my previous Harman Kardon. I wish it had a third or fourth HDMI input, but for the price I can't complain. The Room EQ & Volume adjustment from the included microphone are a great feature and really helps tune your speakers for your room. Can you find a better deal?

4 Star Review low priced receiver with lots of functions

Strengths:

hmdi up converting. cost

Weaknesses:

heating. volume scale seems not conventional

Posted May 18, 2008 - this is the first receiver I bought. It works properly with all the functioned I tested. But the volume scale seems strange. I need to increase the volume >50 just for a low volume audio. I first thought my item has defects because I increased the volume to 20 but didn't hear anything. Later I did some research, seems it is normal for this receiver. It is also hot if you used for just half an hour. Although it does not affect the AV output, it still makes me feel the receiver is not best engineered.

5 Star Review Great receiver for the price

Strengths:

2 HDMI - upconverting, great sound, easy setup

Weaknesses:

limited upscale on all sources, basic remote, upconverts to 720p not 1080p

Posted May 14, 2008 - Purchased to upgrade from my Sony. This, by far, was a great investment. HDMI 1.3 inputs, great quality, amazing sound. Highly recommended for home theater 7.1 surround sound.

4 Star Review Best Value Around for a Future Proof A/V Reciever

Strengths:

SR605 has every option you could want for an under $400 receiver. Satellite radio, AM & FM, all the surround options. Most importantly, it has Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD lossless capabilities!

Weaknesses:

Does get hot as a lot of reviews have indicated. Universal remote not the best. More complicated set-up.

Posted May 5, 2008 - Overall, this was an incredible buy for my economical home theater. I purchased teh sr605 mainly because it has the HD sound options, which my PS3 supports with its Blu-Ray player. The video pass-through from HDMI to HDMI looks seamless to me. I have heard the video upconversion is have not noticed it or even used any components where I would. I picked this receiver over the Samsung AS720HTiB, which was my original choice. Aesthetically, the Samsung looked great with my TV, but lacked some many options this receiver contains. Namely, satellite radio, AM, iPod capability, and HD sound. I will eventually get a Logitech Harmony Universal remote, as this one is not the easiest to use. Also, probably should either get a small fan to keep it cool if you place it in a closed cabinet.

4 Star Review Good receiver, but 705 seems much better

Strengths:

Not so different from earlier 600 series ones, except HDMI

Weaknesses:

just 2 HDMI in, and 2 optical in. Remote is back to basic, without the macros.

Posted Apr 24, 2008 - Its ok for this price. But 705 has much better features. I dont like the remote. They wantedly cut down the features of remote. The 603x I had before, had more better remote, which they are only offering with 705. This doesnt have fans to cool down the box. No THX.

5 Star Review Onkyo TX-SR605S 7.1 Receiver is the ebst receiver for the money only $285

Strengths:

small footprint, nice looking, enough power, eq2 calibration, enough inputs and outputs, future proof, slick design, really nice overall, lossless sound (hd audio) decoding

Weaknesses:

video up-conversion to 720p only, no multiEQ, no cooling fans

Posted Apr 18, 2008 - nice receiver, i paired it with an Infinity tss-1200 speaker package, and it just sounds really phenomenal. i live in an apartment, and did not do the audyssey equalization, but just hooking it up it sounds good. it is well built, it does get warm but nothing like anything else. i wish it had some cooling fans, but it is no complaint. i used the stock wires that came with the speakers, but i recommend buying thicker wires, like 16 or 12 gauge. as i mentioned before, i live in an apartment, but i cannot wait to get a house and test this baby to it's full potential. got it at 6th avenue electronics for 285 bucks brand new. what more would you want? best receiver for the money. Also, only has two hdmi inputs, but how many hdmi sources do you have? a hi-def palyer and that is it (i do not have any game console, so i do not need more than 2). highly recommended

4 Star Review Great entry level a/v receiver with lots of advanced features

Strengths:

* 2 HDMI in / 1 HDMI out (HDMI repeater i.e. passes both audio and video using single cable) * Decodes nearly all latest audio formats. * Audessey automatic speaker setup

Weaknesses:

* upconverts only to 720p

Posted Apr 9, 2008 - The main reason I purchased this receiver was to future proof my home theater. It has the latest version of HDMI spec (1.3) and does pass both audio and video via a single HDMI cable. The price ($340 shipped) I paid at amazon made this receiver even more appealing with all the new features that it provides. This purchase was therefore a no-brainer. For HDMI to HDMI connections, it does not change the input signal just passes it to your TV, so a 1080i input say from your upconverting DVD or HD DVD player will be send unchanged. But if your input component is sending 1080i to the receiver, the Onkyo would down convert it to 720p when output via HDMI to your TV. This is the biggest negative that I can think of. So far, I have been very pleased with my purchase.

5 Star Review Onkyo TX-SR605S 7.1 Receiver-- Best Buy for the Money!

Strengths:

HDMI switching w/ upconverting; automatic speaker calibration; price for features.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Mar 29, 2008 - I bought this receiver to allow HDMI inputs. Overall I think it's the best receiver at this price point for 2 HDMI inputs, full audio and video pass-through, and upconverting of other signals through the HDMI output. The automatic speaker calibration with the included microphone is also an outstanding feature. Very easy to use. Overall, an outstanding receiver!

3 Star Review Good Product

Strengths:

great sound, autoconfigures with included setup mic

Weaknesses:

Does not do HDMI to component conversion

Posted Mar 3, 2008 - This is a rather good receiver and is easy to configure with many inputs and outputs. It receives audio over HDMI and has tons of options. My only disappointment was that it doesn't transmit video from the HDMI input to Component output. I have a projection HDTV from a couple of years ago which doesn't have HDMI but my Satellite Box does. So I figured I'd feed the receive the HDMI output from my Satellite Box and my TV would get the Component vid out from the receiver. After a couple of hours of trying to get it to work, I found the answer in the manual which says that its not doable in that way.

5 Star Review Professional A/V Receiver at an Amateur Price

Strengths:

Can easily customize it to suit almost any viewing or listening mode. Custom pre-sets eliminate typical adjustments for common modes.

Weaknesses:

Manual is intimidating; but I have found that it needs to be very informative to cover all of the adjustments necessary to suit all the choices.

Posted Feb 24, 2008 - This receiver is capable of 7.1 channel surround sound that is awsome. It is pushing my KEF 5.1 speakers plus 2 Kenwood floor speakers and the 250 W powered sub.

4 Star Review Nice product.. If you know what you're getting

Strengths:

audio over HDMI, Onkyo quality/sound

Weaknesses:

few HDMI ports, suprisingly large & flimsy construction

Posted Feb 21, 2008 - This is a great product as long as you've done your research and know what to expect. I'm not experiencing any of the sync issues that others reviews have mentioned. Also, be sure to update the firmware.

5 Star Review Great Receiver

Strengths:

HDMI 1.3 capability, Multi-component compatibility.

Weaknesses:

None so far

Posted Feb 20, 2008 - I have installed this receiver alongwith other equipment in my new home theater. It has 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs, which are the latest standard in high definition interface. Switches easily between the 2 inputs, which in my case are HDMI output from CPU and PS3. So far the performance has been excellent. Would certainly recommend it strongly.

5 Star Review stepping up the "control center"

Strengths:

analog/digital conversion, great sound, excellent price, good looking unit.

Weaknesses:

wish Onkyo would provide dual HDMI outputs on more of their units (feed LCD and projector), only 2 HDMI inputs.

Posted Feb 17, 2008 - This receiver has stepped as the control center of my home theater. Since I have added an LCD to my living room, I now have to feed both the LCD and the projector. The beauty of this unit is that it will send a component signal AND an HDMI signal at the same time... I can use this one unit to supply video to both. And to make things easier, I can send 1 cable to my projector and 1 to the TV because this unit will up-convert all signals to either HDMI or component. For the money, you can't get a better sounding, more functional receiver. I love Onkyo, this guy is replacing my older Onkyo.
