HDMI switching and plenty of other inputs
2 HDMI in, can upconvert all video signals to HDMI or keep same output, will show volume level on TV for all source signal types except HDMI, easy setup
can't re-name input channels, remote apparently can't recognize my DVD player as a CD player
Posted Aug 18, 2007 - I had been looking at the TX-SR604 for quite some time as an HDMI-switchable receiver to replace my aging Kenwood that was limited on video channels and digital audio capabilities. When the TX-SR605 was released, I decided that the new HD audio capabilities made it worth buying the newer model. I run an HD Tivo unit into a Sony rear-projection LCD bigscreen and I haven't lost any signal quality by passing the Tivo HDMI signal through the Onkyo. There is, however some weird interference on my home theater PC that runs a component video signal (nVidia card) through the Onkyo. When viewing the PC on the TV there are small distortional lines that run up the screen occasionally, which definitely weren't there before. I may have to route the component video straight into the TV if I can't isolate the issue. My DVD component-out signal looks great with no issues. Upconversion is not very noticeable (as expected). I plan to run a PS3 through the other HDMI input when finally dropping the $500 at some future date for the games and of course for blu-ray, so I can't really comment yet on the real-time HDMI switching performance. The audio signal processing in the 605 can handle HD DVD and blu-ray. Setup is a snap, and the receiver even comes with a microphone to setup the listening environment (locations of listeners, etc.) automatically. There are a TON of audio and video inputs that can all be setup via an easy onscreen menu. Weaknesses: I have a non-progressive scan DVD player that I prefer to use as a CD player, and the remote can't seem to take control of this (can probably easily be remedied with a 3rd party universal remote like one of the Logitechs). Some vendors out there have it for $399, so shop around. Highly recommended!
