The heart of any serious home entertainment system is a burly A/V receiver that acts as central command for all the connected components. Thanks to this receiver's Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit-HD (DDSC-HD) technology, all of your audio content can be accurately reproduced over 7 channels. There's plenty of room for DVD players, game consoles, HDTVs, external speaker systems, PCs and more to get hooked up, and a host of technology enhancements provide exceptional video and audio performances. minimize

5 Star Review Well worth the money.

Strengths:

Inputs, inputs, inputs. If you have it, you can hook it up to this monster of an a/v receiver.

Weaknesses:

main remote is plain ugly and useless. Use the second remote if you have to. Sometimes confusing menu that you have to navigate to change options. And there are MANY options to be changed.

Posted Mar 26, 2008 - After using a Philips receiver for 7 years plus, I was looking to upgrade and get something better. I have been enjoying Digital sound with the Philips for this whole time, but was looking to something better than DTS 5.1, which was the best that the Philips outputted. At first, I was hesitant to allow my credit card to make such as purchase, but wow. Glad I did. I have everything hooked up thru the receiver. TV, two DVD players, PS3, Dish Network, a VCR. HDMI switching is very nice, and not as slow as some people might say. Setting this receiver up WILL take time. I have had it for about a month now, and I am still changing things every other day. Navigation menu can be a bit confusing, and difficult to get thru, but it's all there. Anything you want to change, you can. The remotes? Terrible. Good thing I have a harmony One remote.

5 Star Review Denon 3808

Strengths:

Lots of power.

Weaknesses:

Remote.

Posted 1 year ago - The Denon 3808 has tons of power for most people's needs. It has lots of inputs including several HDMI inputs. This receiver barely gets five stars because of the main remote. I have never encountered a worse remote. Do yourself a favor and purchase a separate all-in-one universal remote.

5 Star Review Denon 3808ci -

Strengths:

HDMI connections Sound Cost Easy hookup

Weaknesses:

None at this point

Posted Apr 23, 2008 - This receiver sounds great, has four HDMIs and low difficulty setting-up. I compared this receiver to the Onkyo 805. The 805 scared me a bit with video processing. For a little more money, I decided on the Denon.

4 Star Review My choice

Strengths:

2 remotes 1 for dummies 1 fancy one for those who can use it

Weaknesses:

Too hard to read the screen from 12' but using tv as a computer screen helps here ( I think a lot of rec have this problem)

Posted Mar 14, 2008 - I was able to do just about everything without even opening the owners manual. Even though this takes a little longer, it helps me to actually learn what every thing does and then remember this. The fancy remote can change video and audio signals (once hooked up correctly) by first making sure you are controlling the amp at top of remote and then pushing one of the choices located towards the bottom of remote. Touch cd and wow, you have music from the cd player. You can set any video input to play with any audio input. I told the unit to use cable/tv input for video while using cd and a.m. radio audio. This allows me to listen to music while watching tv and listen to a.m. radio commentary while watching game on tv. I have never used a receiver as a video switcher, but I am liking it so far. Like I said, 2 remotes, one equal to old school, never used yet, and a cool touch screen for those who choose to learn how to operate it. Sound, no reason to spend to long here. It sounds great! The only reason I won't rate a 5 is because, if you are willing to spend more, there is always better.

3 Star Review Great sound, HORRIBLE remote

Strengths:

Lots of inputs, can handle plenty of speakers and has power to spare.

Weaknesses:

GODAWFUL main remote that all but forces you to use the TV for basic operations, or use the alternate remote.

Posted Dec 15, 2007 - The base unit is very solid, working in our living room; we've got a big'un, and so it needs some horsepower to fill the room with sound. It does that just fine, with great clarity and definition. That said ... the main remote is simply the most unintuitive, four-letter-word inducing annoyance I have yet to encounter in my adult life of dealing with consumer electronics. There's simply no obvious way to switch from one source to another (there's a phone-style number pad with hard buttons at the bottom for that, but they don't say "source" anywhere on them), and the soft display fades out after what seems like an all-too-brief period. What's worse is the documentation, which makes a lot of their GUI, but why should I have to turn on my television set in order to listen to my CD player? Clearly, Denon lacked any kind of faith in their design, because they also ship a more conventional alternate remote which works the way you expect. (Imagine!) Just an incredibly frustrating piece of hardware that significantly mars an otherwise outstanding product, something other reviewers have noted as well. I would have given this receiver two more stars if not for the main remote.

4 Star Review Great receiver with minor flaws.

Strengths:

Quality, quality, quality. Wide support for input signals and formats. Sounds GREAT.

Weaknesses:

EL display, horrendous GUI menu and remote.

Posted 1 year ago - I purchased Denon AVR-3808CI receiver because I needed something that is capable of decoding all the modern digital signals and do HDMI switching for my projector. I owned a 12-year old Denon receiver, and it was time to upgrade. Basically, I got what I wanted. However, there are some gotchas people need to know about. 1. Display. EL display technology reminds me of '70th. Information on it is highly inconvenient for perception. Also, this type of a display creates crosstalks to analog signals, and manufacturer turns it off in Pure Direct mode. Denon should seriously consider upgrading future models to graphic LCD or OLED screens. Nice color screen should not be too expensive considering the price range of the receiver. 2. Menu. Denon definitely should fire their usability expert. This is probably the most stupid menu I have ever seen in my life. There are industry standards for building GUIs, and Denon totally ignored them. Important settings such as surround modes as scattered deep inside different subtrees of the menu, even the left arrow button may mean different things depending on where you are. 3. Main remote control. This is a very logical complement of the menu system. Almost as stupid and un-intuitive as the menu. Don't even think of finding your way around without thorough reading of user manual. 4. The need to use a TV for GUI menu. One major disappointment is the need to keep my projector turned on for navigating through the menus. I even thought of purchasing a small LCD TV for that. Well, you *can* use the built-in EL display for menu navigation, but it's sort of a masochism. 5. As I said, I use an HDMI projector as a display device for my theater. Sometimes I watch movies on my computer. I connected the receiver to the secondary DVI port of my video card. Not sure if it's an issue with NVidia drivers or with the receiver, but each time I turn off the receiver and then turn it on again, my video card disables the output to the secondary DVI port, and I need to use NVidia Display Control Panel to turn it back on. Before I purchased the receiver, my video card was connected directly to the projector, and this issue was non-existent. 6. One feature I'm definitely missing is the ability to switch the phase of the analog preamp outputs. I have PSB Image 7 spakers that have separate amplifiers for their woofers. I connect each speaker with two wires - one high-level for mid-highs (regular speaker output from the receiver), and one low-level for the woofers (preamp output from receiver). There is no chance to switch the phase of any of these two to match the other. Having said that, I would assure you that the receiver itself is a real thing. After all, you purchase equipment like this for its audio performance, and only then for the usability. Solid built, high quality piece of hardware. Clear undistorted sound (very pleasant to the ear), wide support of formats. Real HDMI switching with audio support over the same interface. Automatic speakers setup, plenty of inputs for all situations. Firmware upgradeability over the Internet. Once I have it set up, I'm really enjoying the unit as a centerpiece of my home theater.

5 Star Review Tremendous AVR

Strengths:

Power, flexibility, sound quality, 7.1, HDMI inputs and output.

Weaknesses:

Fat fingers will have a hard time hooking up speaker cables

Posted 1 year ago - I did a tremendous amount of research. I had a Denon AVR several years ago that was killed in a lightning storm and just did without any AVR for several years. The bug bit me again once I got my new plasma TV. This is the AVR to buy unless you can afford separates (high end). There's nothing this AVR can't do. It's definitely a 5* AVR.

4 Star Review Denon 3808CI

Strengths:

Solid build, very powerful for any application, future proof

Weaknesses:

remote control, not very intuitive to use

Posted 1 year ago - This receiver has everything you would want in terms of power, inputs & outputs & even a great look. Unfortunately, the DVD output has gone into a funk, working for about 30 minutes, then the audio goes silent until I switch outputs to something else & switch it back. I will have to service the unit which has become a real hassle due to disconnecting it, getting it to the reapir shop & reconnect, I wish there was an easier way. I would give this product 5 stars if they built it with better electrical components.
