Posted Aug 14, 2005 - The Microsoft Fingerprint Reader is an excellent gadget! It is precisely what someone like me needs badly (using the PC all the time, sitting in front of it most of the day every day, slightly varying passwords to numerous sites, etc). With that said, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to someone who only uses their PC on occasion, or just doesn't have to put up with a million user names/passwords.
This device is very accurate. Scanning and registering my fingerprints was very quick and easy. I did not have trouble the first time at all. It's small, sleek, and it compliments my desktop quite nicely. It's very much compatible with numerous programs (Netscape Mail & Newsgroups, Internet Explorer obviously, Netscape browser, G-Mail Notifier, and many online games), and almost ANY site with a login screen.
Simply put, this device is as perfect as fingerprint readers get. It's highly compatible, no technical problems**, no complicated installation, and it's very easy to clean: simply stick a piece of Scotch-tape on the optical sensor and gently pull it off. Again, I highly recommend this to people have many uses for their computer, along with wanting a complimentary addition to their desktop.
** Why only 4 stars?? I have a few of these fingerprint readers (home/work/notebook), and it seems to be hit or miss. Sometimes you get a great unit, and other times the one you buy might take 10 to 20 scans before it recognizes you--EVERY TIME you want to use it. If that happens, most stores have a great return/exchange policy that will allow you to exchange defective merchandise.
