4 Star Review Brother PT-1280 Electronic Labeling System

Strengths:

Price, print quality, supports 2 line printing, supports several “TZ” tape sizes up to ½”, easy to use/intuitive, supports a number of different text and border formatting options

Weaknesses:

No AC adapter, costly refills, wastes tape and requires you to cut it manually

Posted Sep 19, 2007 - We bought this labeler from a local office supply store recently as it was on sale for a very attractive price. It is our second Ptouch labeler and works great, just like the first one. It is compact, relatively lightweight, and has a small 15 character display so you can see what you are doing. It comes with a starter tape and requires 6 AAA batteries or an AC adapter, neither of which is included. It prints high quality, professional looking labels in a number of different formats. On the downside, it requires 6 AAA batteries or an AC adapter which is not included, and the refill tapes are pretty expensive for this model. When it prints a label, it leaves pretty large margins on each side of the label which not only wastes tape, but requires you to cut the tape to make it look “normal”. This can be adjusted somewhat with some effort, but it will not save you much and you will still need to cut the tape. In summary, it’s a fair labeler at a good price (if you shop around for it), and if you can stomach the high cost of refill tape then I would recommend it. But be aware that there are other labelers available, which take cheaper tape, and in the long run these may be a better alternative for you.

5 Star Review Good value for the money

Strengths:

Full featured keyboard; Nice display; quality labels

Weaknesses:

No batteries or AC adapter included; expensive refills

Posted Sep 13, 2007 - I was looking for a labeller to sort out all the cables on the back of my media closet & computer. While there are cheaper options out there, the PT-1280 provides good value for the buck. It has a nice screen, which is easy to read. The best feature (for me) is full featured keyboard, with a standard keyboard layout. Other units put the letters in order, so I have to hunt and peck. As I'm used to a computer keyboard, I prefer this layout. You get a small starter roll of labels, which is kind of lame. I guess Brother is going with the printer/razor-blade model, where they sell the unit for cheap, knowing that refills are really expensive! And they are!! About $15 a cartridge. Be sure and get two-packs, as you get a significant savings on the second one. The unit does not come with batteries or AC adapter, so take that into consideration. Especially as you need SIX AA batteries. The unit is lightweight, until the batteries are installed. ;-) I've been using it lightly for a month now, and still have not issues with the batteries.

4 Star Review Electronic Labeling System

Strengths:

Good device, useful and well designed

Weaknesses:

Wastes too much tape

Posted Dec 25, 2007 - I've had a PT-1280 for about six months now, and I'm very happy with it. I like the qwerty layout, the TZ Tape system is compatible with several different sizes and many different colors, and the interface is extremely intuitive without being limiting. Most importantly, it can print two lines of text on a label...extremely useful! Though I've never found any use for the "favorites" buttons on the front, it has some nice extra features, like a handful of cute banner styles, and a surprising variety of useful symbols, including electronic engineering symbols. It will also do automatic numbering, mirror print for clear tape, and vertical print. It's surprisingly quick and easy to switch out tape cartridges, so it works well if you have different colors and sizes that you switch between frequently. There are no mechanisms to engage; just swing open the bottom and place the cartridge in. It's clear that Brother is in the business of selling tape and not printers, though, and this device makes it clear. It puts ridiculous 1" wide margins on everything it prints, and almost always requires me to trim the labels manually. You can adjust the margin sizes, but this only actually shortens the left margin, and then prints a marker on the right telling you where to trim it yourself. The margin setting is also one of the most buried options in the labeller's menu, and has to be reset every time you clear the display. Overall, I'm happy with this device, but I have to keep scissors with it, and my desk is confettied with waste after even small printing jobs.

3 Star Review PT-1280 Electronic Labeling System

Strengths:

It is good - keep some scissors handy

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Dec 23, 2007 - The product serves its purpose and does so competently. However, I discount two stars for the following reasons: 1) It is wasteful of label tape. Even when reducing margins to the narrowest setting, the product still leaves a chunk of needless white space that you need to cut off on the front of each label. 2) The product can use an AC adapter but does not ship with one. Of course, this addition would probably increase the low price. 3) It has a pesky way of clearing both text and settings when the "clear" function is used. It would be nice if it only cleared the text. The workaround is manual backspacing of each character, which is not as convenient. All in all, these are small inconveniences given the low price for an otherwise high-quality product. It is probably one of the best labelers available in its price range.

2 Star Review good quality labels, not very practical labeler

Strengths:

- labels are clear and stick well

Weaknesses:

- labeler requires 6 AAA cells, cutter wastes too much tape

Posted Dec 26, 2007 - I have had a Casio labeler for some time, so I got this one to compare. I found the quality of the Brother label tape to be better - the lettering is clearer and the tape doesn't peel off as much. However, I didn't like the labeler very much. It requires 6 AAA cells, which seems very wasteful. I stick in 6 rechargeable cells when I want to make labels, but that's a pain because loading and unloading the batteries is harder than it should be. They should have made the body a little larger so they could fit in AA cells in a row of 6. Also, as everyone else has mentioned, when you cut a label there is a huge amount of wasted space on each side, even more than with the Casio. There is just no reason why they couldn't design the cutter to leave just 1 character worth of space.

3 Star Review PT-1280 Electronic Labeling System

Strengths:

big button, easy to work

Weaknesses:

Not the best model, have to reset everything.

Posted Dec 9, 2007 - I don't like this Brother labeler model because it doesn't save the size format from use to use. Every time I turn it on I have to start over and re-size and change fonts for my labels. Every other model I have had saved your changes from use to use. Not exactly a time saving feature.

2 Star Review works well, but pricey tapes

Strengths:

enough basic styles, good-looking labels, does not suck much battery juice

Weaknesses:

expensive tapes, waste tons of tapes

Posted Dec 5, 2007 - This thing works well right out of box. Printed labels looks professional, with enough printing styles. It uses 6 AAA batteries, which is not included in the original package. However, the battery can last long time in this machine. The problem with it is the tape's price. Think about it, $15-20 for a 26' tape. And the thing is this machine wastes tons of tapes, no matter what how you tweak it. I think it is just Brother's marketing, selling the machine for cheap and then making money to mark up the price of tapes way way high. By the way, it only comes with a starter tape, which is only half of a regular one, 13' instead of 26'.

2 Star Review PT-1280 Electronic Labeling System

Strengths:

Easy to use, small unit

Weaknesses:

Tape maximum width is 1/2" and costly

Posted Nov 10, 2007 - Unless you enjoy wasting your money on the refill tape, this one is nearly the same as the PT-80, but the "TZ" refill tape for this 1280 is at or more than $20 per refill. The "M" refill tape for the 80 is about half the cost and has all the same printing features as far as I have seen (I used the 80 regularly at work and bought this 1280 for home use). Also a main reason I bought this one is that the TZ tape comes in 3/4" and 1" widths for more printing options; however this model does not fit the larger widths, maximum is 1/2", so don't waste your money on this one. I got burned.

2 Star Review PT-1280 Electronic Labeling System

Strengths:

Great labeler for narrow labels

Weaknesses:

Expensive tape

Posted Nov 4, 2007 - There may be better labelers but I am happy with this one. Yes, the tape is far too expensive. As far as too much waste, you can set the margins down. This is a quality machine and makes quality labels. I have another Brother (P-Touch) that must be 15 years old and it has held up well.

4 Star Review PT-1280 Electronics Labeller

Strengths:

Price, Print quality, full keyboard, more border options, light weight, portable.

Weaknesses:

Need batteries to operate.

Posted Nov 3, 2007 - I purchased this labeller online and after rebate, it became almost free. Package was really worst. Manufacturer rebate worked. It has good quality of print, with various border options and format options. Keyboard was similar to keyboard pad.

4 Star Review Gets the job done

Strengths:

Easy to use, clear display, price paid, creates great labels.

Weaknesses:

Cost of replacement label tape and batteries if used a lot.

Posted Sep 17, 2007 - This is a great labeler for anyone looking to make labels for things around the home or office. I found it very useful for labeling circuits in the breaker box, water pipes in the basement, etc. It's easy and intuitive to use, has an easy to read screen, and prints labels quickly and without a lot of effort. On the downside, the replacement tapes are costly, as are batteries if you use the unit a lot.
