Strengths:Cheap, attractive, nice display, media buttons on the keyboard, cd/dvd burner, seems well built
Weaknesses:Slow / not optimally configured
Posted Mar 20, 2007 - I bought this because I found a good deal on it. I was concerned about it being configured with 512M of memory and Windows Vista, as it turns out my concerns were valid. It is slow and requires either a downgrade in OS (to XP or earlier) or an upgrade in memory (to 1G or higher). My understanding is that either one of these will make it a pretty nice laptop. I plan on upgrading my memory but have not done so yet. I am also looking into removing unnecessary applications/processes to free up available memory. As it stands right now, it is noticeably slower than my other laptop, a 1.4GHz celeron running XP.
Slow performance aside, there are other things about the laptop that may help you decide if it is right for you. It is attractive and appears well built – I expect it to last a long time if not abused too bad. It has a 15.4” WXGA brightview screen which looks great. There are media control buttons right above the keyboard which allows you to control music directly, without using an application. Additional features include a card reader (SD, MS/Pro, MMC, XD), 8xDVD+-R/RW DL drive, 80G hard drive, T2060 dual core 1.6GHz CPU, built in wireless, 6 cell battery, and HP quickplay mode (allows you to use the laptop as a dvd player without booting to windows) with remote control. I/O ports include 3 USB ports, 1 1394 port, 1 expresscard slot, modem, S-video out jack, external monitor port (VGA), expansion port 3, RJ-45 jack, audio in (mic), and audio out (headphone).
All in all, my initial impressions are positive for this laptop, I would recommend it if you have or are willing to buy at least an extra 512M of memory (or if you can and are willing to downgrade the OS).
