Price, speed, display, 1 year warranty.
Battery (1 hour on dial-up, 30 minutes on wireless), can't up-grade the computer.
Posted Apr 30, 2005 - I rarely fire up my desktop anymore since I acquired this I1000, 90 percent of my computer usage is on-line and this is perfect for that. It's fast and the display is a real surprise and a treat, sharp graphics, text and excellent color rendition. The wireless card performs perfectly and will pick up networks easily. It's a shocking bargain for the price (689 for the 15", 40gb, wireless). I wouldn't expect to do any graphics work with this machine as the vid is ok for viewing but not for editing pics, it would be great for data and word processing. I'm much more impressed than I thought I would be because of the price point. If you need a decent, low priced notebook with power and lots of goodies, it can't be beat. A word about Dell. I bought one because everyone I know that has one simply has no problems with them...zero. I read about the service nightmares but I can't relate to them because no one I know has ever had one break, the oldest one is five years and if I got three out of this notebook, I'd call it a good deal, anything after that is gravy. :) UPDATE: It's about 6 weeks now and it's still an impressive computer for the money. No problems but Dell sent me an offer to extend the warranty for an additional two years for 80 bucks so I took it so I now have a three year mail in warranty. The speakers are atrocious, almost useless which is a shame because the DVD movie playback is superb. Fortunately, it has a plug for external speakers which makes watching movies a pleasure. I added an additional 256 mg memory module from Crucial for under 50 bucks which gives 64 megs of shared video memory, I continue to be amazed at the quality of the display. I've added bluetooth which communicates with my phone to give me internet access anytime anywhere although that's not something you would want to use for hours of surfing but great if you need to check email and no wifi is handy. Al told, I'd do it again, I'll post back in six months and we'll see how it's doing. UPDATE: 4/30/05 Since the 1000 has been discontinued now it's a bit moot at this point but it's still a fantistic computer, so good I've bought another Dell, a 700m. The 1000 was just too heavy to carry around so now it's replaced my old desktop and stays at home. Still have had no difficulties at all and will keep it as back up for the 700m. See my review of the 700m!
