4 Star Review HP DV6500t notebook

Strengths:

-Smaller in size than other 15.4 inch notebooks -Vibrant screen -Small sized power supply -HDMI output port -TV tuner comes with many accessories

Weaknesses:

-12 cell battery is pretty heavy -Lots of trailware -Only 3 USB ports -Scroll pad gets hot

Posted Sep 27, 2007 - specs: vista premium core 2 duo T7500 2.2Ghz 4MB L2 2 GB RAM dvd writer nvidia geforce 8400M GS 120 GB HD tv tuner 12 cell battery I bought my dv6500t from the hp website. This is my first notebook purchase and I would recommend this laptop for those wanting a nice sized screen for watching movies and other media and light gaming since the screen is large but the notebook itself is not that big compared to other brands. For its size, the laptop is not too heavy unless you get the 12 cell battery which adds noticable weight. The 12 cell props the notebook up about 3/4 of an inch but I don't notice it much. The screen is nice with bright colors. The power supply is very small and light. There is an HDMI port to hook up the laptop to a hd monitor or hdtv which is also a nice feature. The tv tuner also comes with a lot of extras like a large remote control and receiver, portable antenna, etc. Out of the box there were a lot of programs I did not want on it so it took some times uninstalling the trial programs. Another con is that there are only 3 USB ports while a lot of other notebooks come with 4. Though the 12 cell props the notebook up, I think it helps keep the notebook cooler since it allow heat to escape through the bottom vents vs. with the notebook is flat on the desk but I noticed the scroll pad gets quite hot. All in all this is a pretty nice notebook for the price.

4 Star Review Powerful laptop with reasonable price

Strengths:

Powerful chip, good graphic card, big HD, long battery, nice monitor and good-looking overall.

Weaknesses:

Keyboard not good as Vostro or Thinkpad. A little bit bulky and heavy with 12-cell battery.

Posted Oct 9, 2007 - Good configurations: Vista Home Premium Core 2 duo T7500 2.2Ghz 4MB L2 2 GB RAM DVD writer Nvidia geforce 8400M GS 160 GB HD 12 cell battery With above configuration, the price is quite reasonable if compares with rival products. Right now it is a good laptop but I am not sure about realiability of this product.

4 Star Review Can be built out to a mid-range gaming laptop

Strengths:

Nice looking screen, fast video (available), long battery life(12cell)

Weaknesses:

Low quality feel on the touchpad buttons, runs a bit warm.

Posted Oct 8, 2007 - I ordered my unit with 2GB ram, Core2Duo T7500 2.2Ghz w/ 4meg cache, GeForce 8400GS, 160GB HD, with the webcam/mic combo. First of all I immediately wiped Vista using the guide at www.nogodforme.com/HPD... (or google DV6500T triple play). I installed my own university copy of XP and all of my drivers work great, including the beta Nvidia drivers. This laptops runs World in Conflict and Battlefield 2 very well. I've noticed that where my left hand rests playing ESDF (or WASD as some prefer) controls gets a bit sweaty as the laptop gets pretty warm there. The overall feel of the laptop, sturdiness and response of the keyboard, is good but not great, hence my 4 star rating. Also I hadn't read the specs closely, so didn't anticipate the 12 cell battery being about 1.5" thicker than a regular one. It raises up the back of the laptop, giving the keyboard a title. It might not fit as well into some laptop bags w/ the 12 cell battery, so keep that in mind when ordering.

5 Star Review Nice Value in a Mulitmedia Notebook

Strengths:

Core 2 Duo 64 bit processing. 2 GB RAM standard on SE models. New Santa Rosa architecture and X3100 graphics. Excellent screen quality. Good battery life relative to processing power.

Weaknesses:

Integrated webcam has only VGA resolution. Glossy screen is a bit reflective.

Posted Oct 3, 2007 - The HP DV-6500 series offers great value with near state of the are features and specifications. My unit is a Special Edition variation of the 6500 packaged for Best Buy. This model features the Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, an exception 15.4 widescreen display, 2 GB RAM, a 200 GB Hard drive, remote control and a distinctive off-white glossy case design. Like all current HP models, it also features integrated Quickplay operation for accessing the multimedia aspects of the machine. The SE edition is based around Intel's newer Santa Rosa architecture with increased bus speed and improved X3100 integrated graphics. Its a solid multimedia machine, and as such, already incorporates the 2 GB RAM necessary for running Vista in combination with CPU intensive applications. The SE edition is built to a very favorable price point with few compromises. One concern I had prior to purchasing was the use of the Intel T5250 Core 2 Duo which only runs at 1.5 ghz and is the entry point of the Santa Rosa processors. Most Santa Rosa based machines use the T7xxx series which run closer to or above 2 ghz. I imagine use of the T5250 was a way for HP to offer a lower price point. In practice, the T5250 is a good performer, and working in concert with 2GB RAM and the X3100 graphics, is not at all limiting. In fact, the 1.5 ghz operation may be contributing to the excellent 4 hour plus battery life I am experiencing. The SE model also includes the higher capacity 12 cell battery. Though including 2 GB of RAM, the Santa Rosa architecture accepts a total of 4 GB for future expansion. In terms of features, it lacks for little. Included are 3 USB ports, one Firewire port, infrared remote capability, two audio out jacks with one being havin digital S/PDIF output, a 5-in-1 card reader and DVD burner with Lightscribe labelling. The machine is a pleasure to use. The screen is outstanding though some may not like the reflectivity of the glossy screen. The build quality is solid and comparable to the best units. The keyboard is well made, but a bit springy. The touchpad feature an integrated scrolling strip which works well. The unit runs way cooler and quieter than the Compaq AMD based machine this is replacing. Audio quality seems to also be on par with the better notebooks. Its too soon to make predications about reliability, but given my previous experience with a previous Compaq moel and all I have read, I expect reliability to be good. Again, the apparent build quality is high. My standard for comparison in computing quality remains with Apple. I own a three year old iBook and prefer Mac OS to Windows XP or Vista. However, some programs I run only have Windows versions so I need to keep a PC on hand. That said, it seems that HP has taken a page out of Apple's book in designing these new machines. Screen quality is on par or better than on the Macbooks and certainly bigger than the 13.3 size that Apple only offers. The HP included remote and Quickplay combination works similar to Apple's Front Row feature. While the Apple's come with no additional bloatware installed, HP kept this to a minimum. The HP specific software, including an electronic update feature, is actually useful. Given that Vista also seems to borrow from MAC OS X, the overall HP computing experience is not far off in performance and build quality from what Apple offers, at a price point lower by $300 or so. Overall, even as an admitted Apple guy, the HP 6500 series is impressive, enjoyable to use, and an excellent value. The Special Edition models come especially recommended.

4 Star Review Excellent

Strengths:

Slim, beautiful finish, HDMI output

Weaknesses:

screen resolution no more than WXGA, No Latch

Posted Feb 10, 2008 - Beautiful design. I overall like the product especially if you can get it with 25-30% off (Mine came around $800 with tax with T7250 and other usual config including discrete video card 8400GS which I would recommend to anyone interested in buying this laptop. This is solid laptop. The only drawback in 15.4" series (DV6500 now DV6700 series) is that the screen resolution is 1280x 800 (WXGA) instead of 1680x 1050 (WSXGA) that most competitors are offering.

4 Star Review My first notebook

Strengths:

Nice glossy design, HDMI output, 30% HP discount maked this laptop resonable price with competitive performance

Weaknesses:

Fan noise

Posted Dec 21, 2007 - Description Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB) 2GB DDR2 Memory 120GB 5400RPM SATA HDD 128MB NVIDIA GeForcce 8400M GS Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Dual Layer Drive 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery I bought my first laptop and this is for my wife. Before purchasing, I took a look several different brands notebooks at Circuit City. HP pavilion series attracted my attention with its glossy look. Designwise, I chose this laptop in my mind. Finally, I found a 30% discount HP code and realized that was good deal and triggered. This has a HDMI output, 3 USB, 5-in-1 digital media card reader, an ExpressCard slot, etc. My wife and I would use this computer at home most time, so the battery was not a concern and chose 6 cell battery. I read some complain reviews about keyboard. However it's not that bad to me. Only thing I concerned is the fan noise. I've never used a laptop before, so I wonder if the noise level of other notebooks is similar. But it's not big issue. Overall so far I'm pretty satisfied the performance and nice looking screen.

2 Star Review dv6500t HP notebook

Strengths:

Looks sleek,speedy,price was okay

Weaknesses:

Certain areas seem flimsy

Posted Mar 10, 2008 - 15.4 / 2.2 GHz /2GB / 120GB disk /DVD RW / 6 high-capacity battery This was my first official laptop. I had been looking for a laptop which would I could use for work as well. The final push was when my wife said she wanted a portable DVD player; well laptop is a portable DVD player. Since it was customized so the item came from China but probably all of them are not manufactured there. The outer and inner looks are very sleek and curved. Screen is ok (I don't intend to play games). I was originally looking for WinXP notebook but all of them are now offered with Vista. The MS website differentiated remote desktop as of them missing features in between Vista Home premium but home premium does have RDP otherwise I was planning to upgrade to Ultimate. Like all notebook/desktops this does come with many offer softwares so the first thing I did was to uninstall all that junk. Then I created a different power profile for my taste, reduced the icon sizes, etc. etc. So far so good, the only problem I had was with a couple of flimsy areas. The area around the CD drive is hollow (well it has to be hollow) and so the plastic bends inwards if you hold the laptop on the right side there. But I have trained myself to hold the right-bottom side instead. If the laptop is closed then you would most probably hold it at the LCD/body hinge edge and the area between the 2 hinges is weak and the part of the LCD between hinges bends inwards easily. The area underneath the scroll pad gets hot if the processors have been running at full power. There is a fan exhaust towards top-left which sucks air from underneath it but if have the laptop on your lap then make sure that vent might get blocked. Have not tested the writer. Overall this has a good value for money; but I kind of wish that I maybe I should have picked 14.1 inch notebook which would have been more travel friendly. Update (3 months later): I recently had an oppurtunity to use the Firewire port to connect to the Camcorder and the notebook failed to recognize the camcorder. The camcorder works with a different system and so it is not at fault. I tried to get the notebook repaired under warranty. it has been a month now and the notebook has gone twice to the repair center. On the fist visit they even took the luxury of replacing the wireless antenna even though there was nothing wrong with it but the firewire port was not even touched. I am quite disappointed at the quality of their repair center or maybe I was just an isolated case.

4 Star Review HP dv6500t -- cheaply made, but gets the job done

Strengths:

santa rosa chipset style/design multimedia features loud speakers value

Weaknesses:

graphics options cheaply constructed heat bloatware

Posted Jan 4, 2008 - This is a great laptop if you are looking for a value. I am a firm believer in buying cheap laptops and trading them up every 2-3 years. Technology changes so fast, and you cannot upgrade laptops. Why blow tons of money on a super laptop now that will be mediocre at best in a year? Its got almost all the multimedia features you could want: remote control, HDMI, firewire, quickplay buttons, great, loud speakers, 2 headphone jacks. It looks stylish, but it feels cheap. It's very bendable and made of thin plastic. It gets warm in your lap, like almost all laptops. When are they going to fix this? The graphics options are not intended for serious gaming. The intel option is utterly hopeless for gaming. Avoid that if you are going to play any 3D games at all. The 8400M GS is exponentially better, however its still not great. Don't expect to be able to play new games at anything more than middle/low settings, if at all. The laptop comes with a ton of bloatware and needless software. You may want to reformat and fresh install out of the box. I recommend going to www.blackviper.com and checking out the services they recommed to shut down on Vista to help performance also. Overall, I recommed this laptop, but only up to a certain pricepoint. I would not configure it with every option, or buy it without a promotion. At that price you may as well spend your money on a thinkpad or macbook, if you got the dough to spend.
