Good notebook, except OS
Fully loaded (for me). Quiet. Comfort screen resolution (1400x900 - not too low, and not too high for 15.4"). No sockets on the front.
Windows Vista. Slightly buggy Vista installation process and recovery process/DVD.
Posted 1 year ago - This machine would be great for me if Windows Vista wasn't there - this operating system is a disaster as far as the stability is concerned. Once I installed it, everything worked fine (and even pretty fast - thanks to the CPU and memory amount). But then I started migrating programs from my old notebook (where I had XP Pro), and the 3rd program I tried to install on Vista crushed it completely, so that I even couldn't recover it with the built-in tools: on boot-up I had a Vista menu with 'Recover' and 'Start normally' items - the first one made it return to that same menu, and the second one led to BSOD (blue screen of death). I had to recover with the recovery DVD that Asus provided with the notebook (note that you loose the partition content while doing this). They say that WinXP can be installed fine on the notebook (there is no driver for the infrared port only). Note that only Vista Business and Ultimate can be downgraded to XP Pro though (I ordered Home Premium because I didn't know that fact, and I hoped Vista became better with SP1 :)). I also installed Ubuntu 8.04 without problems (you can google for instuctions and drivers). Great Asus warranty: 2 yr global, plus 1 yr accidental damage, plus 0 bright dot LCD policy (BTW, there are no dead or bright dots on my display). A wired mouse and a carry case are included with the notebook. And a doily to clean fingerprints on the screen is included too.
