Posted Jun 28, 2008 - I am very excited to have ordered this small laptop. It will now allow me to give presentations and access the internet which I could not do on my daughter's DVD player alone. It's size is perfect and the weight is great. I also like that it comes in different colors. I chose black to keep it looking good all the time.
Discussion of Sony VAIO TX650P/B 11.1" Notebook - Pentium M 753 1.20 GHz - Charcoal
Posted Dec 16, 2007 - After having my TX650 for almost 2 years, it started freezing up when moved slightly. I went through all the trouble shooting that Sony suggested, then it still froze. Next time I tried to start it, it would not boot up. I sent it to Sony repair and they say it needs a new motherboard for $699.+shipping. Considering its original costs, and the limited amount of use it gets (only when I travel or sometimes when I am watching tv)that is a very expensive convenience in my book. Anyone else having any similar problems? Should I have NOT sent it to Sony? When it works, it is great, but I have never had this kind of problem with any computer before...I always end up upgrading before the darn thing wears out!
Discussion of Toshiba Qosmio G15-AV501 17" Notebook - Pentium M 745 1.80 GHz
Posted Aug 29, 2007 - I have looked on this site at the stores making their offering of used or refurbished notebook computers in particular the Toshiba G 15. In this posting there are prices of $699 to nearly $1,300 for these 4-year-old computers. Some are complete packages some are incomplete. I will explain later why this is important. What I think is very interesting is that I found a dealer selling the new Qosmio 45F series; his price was $1,500 for a new fully equipped and warranted computer. Please note that these new computers are 3 times what the 4-year-old G15 is and for only $200 more. Get my drift a 4year old factory refurbished computer for $1,300 VS a new 3 times the computer for $1,500. Does any one see the point here? One feature I noticed right away on the F45 was that the on board CD was capable of recording an equivalent of four DVD’s or 30Gig bytes. It out distanced the older computer in many other areas as well. Now for the explanation I promised earlier. Regarding the complete/incomplete packages I referenced for the G 15 model. I own several of these computers. I purchased my first one the same day that Fry’s Electronics put the on their shelf. It was a failure out of the box and I returned it immediately. Later I bought several refurbished units. The first one I bought VIA Toshiba for $800. It was complete which means it had all its cables the remote control and the remote receiver interface as well as both CD sets one the OS restore set and the other the Multimedia Player set used for the video processing features and TV tuner. It is important to know that on its initial use the Player CD must be inserted so that the computer can verify that you have it and therefore are allowed to use the Player features. At various times some apparently at random or if you are attempting to use or do something not previously used or done the system requests the CD. If this CD is not available then the user is SOL. Please note that these refurbished units come packaged in different ways. Some with just the computer others include some of the package components that comes with the computer when new. A few are complete or close to complete. If these computers crash and the OS or the PLAYER software needs to be reloaded when I asked these various sales people how to do so without the CD’s they reply that the complete system has been loaded on to the computer and when we get the computer the first time we are to make these CD’s. This is patently false there is no provision on these computers for such a solution. Another sales person recently told me that he was told to only supply these CD’s if the purchaser knew enough to ask for them or if they insisted but only at the time of purchase. This is a very deceptive practice. Once the computer crashes the user is SOL with out these CD’s. If the user is lucky enough to get the computer and CD’s they would still be in trouble since the additional hardware needed to get this computer fully functional is missing. The complete refurbished sets are sold for $700 to $900 dollars each, typically. The computers sold for more are just blatant rip-offs since the new ones, which are complete and more powerful, are just $1,500. My first refurbished unit was purchased for $800 complete 2 and ½ years ago. They should be less now. My most recent purchase was for a complete package from a well-known Internet retailer for more than $900. Once I received it and inspected it I found that it had been dropped on one corner and the case was damaged but they claimed it would still work flawlessly. About a week later the OS began giving me error messages concerning the temperature of the computer saying shut it down immediately and suggesting that I return the computer for repair immediately. I am still trying to get it repaired as they promised, however I have had to make multiple requests. Maybe it will happen maybe it won’t. In summary the customers of these operations are paying way too much for these refurbished computers especially when one considers that the purchasers are not getting what they should in order to get the full advantage and use of these units. At the prices these people are paying they should consider buying new computers. When I contacted Toshiba regarding the purchase of some of these refurbished units I found out that Toshiba was selling these units at considerably less than what the retailer is selling. The retailer is making more than he is on new units. Toshiba said that they sell these refurbished units complete unless the retailer requests that they don’t send complete units. Toshiba said usually the retailer uses these incomplete units to replace warrantee units only since he gets these units for much less than the complete units. However some unscrupulous retailers sell these units at full price and do not tell their customers that they are not complete but sell them for complete prices. Another situation is that these retailers are purchasing at a very good price complete units and then removing the CD’s and other associated equipment selling the incomplete units at full complete prices then telling the customer if they want the CD’s and the associated equipment as I described above they must pay additional fees for it at a considerable increase thus making as much as $1,200 to $1,300 dollars on a unit that is worth at most $800 dollars. I have discovered several other scenarios like these but I have said enough to give you an idea of what these scammers are doing. Check these used and refurbished units out against new ones and think twice about if you are really getting a good deal. As I said buyer be aware.

Discussion of Acer Ferrari 4005WLMi 15.4" Notebook - Turion 64 ML-37 2 GHz
Posted Oct 27, 2006 - This is by no way a scam etc i have found a similar cheaper reputable laptop for less, if you look there are a few big names selling it!!! I am note selling or advertising(well not being paid for advertising anyway) By the way, for anyone looking at this laptop may i remind you that the Acer Aspire 5101AWLMI Notebook is very simmilar once you take the thousand pound price gap. The processor in the ferrari is slightly more power conservative(hence the mL instead of mK) but does not seem to affect battery life by only half an hour They have the same proccessing power. if you want battery life get a univesal battery. Though the aspires spec indicates a x300 graphics card there is a cheaper model (same name £100 less) has an ATI RADEON Xpress 1100 add 512 ram to that(to make it 1 Gb) and you have got a better graphics card(i assume) than the more expensive model (the ferrari looks to have dedicated 128mb graphics better than both).(the hard drive is less on that one(60Gb) but if you really need more get an external hard drive or replace the one included) the Acer Aspire 5101AWLMI - 2GHz Turion 64 MK-36, 1GB DDR2, 100GB, DVD±RW DL, Windows XP Media Center Edition, 15.4" TFT - http://www.pricegrabber.co.uk/search_getprod.php/masterid=25813895 (£500) The cheaper model(better graphics) - 2.0GHz Turion 64 MK-36, 512MB DDR2, 60GB, DVD±RW, Windows XP, 15.4" TFT - http://www.pricegrabber.co.uk/search_getprod.php/masterid=26585722 (£400) Please note i suspect neither of these are dual core, there is a mistake in 2GHz Turion 64 MK-36 thinking it is 2GHz Turion 64 X2 MK-36 If the Acer Aspire 5101AWLMI has what you need i would suggest it over this one. The Ferrari does have bluetooth and infrared but those aren't very expensive usd devices either. Any other comments are welcome. (hmm.. enter doesent seem to work, therefor the unruly squashing together)
Discussion of Acer Aspire 5101AWLMI Notebook
Posted Oct 27, 2006 - I would like to point out that this is most likely to be a single core processor. The reseon for this is that to be a dual core processor it would have to be like this... "2GHz Turion 64 X2 MK-36" instead of "2GHz Turion 64 MK-36" the X2 means 2 processors believe it or not. Also if it was a dual core processor like it says above the price is unrealistic considering they sell for vast amounts of money. I have not seen any laptop with more than a 2Ghz dual processor an they are very expensive. I believe this is a simple error done by either a automated program or a human error by someone who has not researched this area thoroughly. Saying that the processor is very good supporting 64 bit programs , the area software is heading. I have heard people say that Intel is better than AMD in mobility. And considering the Laptops in the price range a 1.7 GHz Intel might be better they are unlikely (90%+) to have 64 bit compatibility so for the price I would recommend this PC general use(eg word processing and light gaming(should support Age of Empires 3 with little difficulty though you may need to turn the graphics down)) If you want to use this on a long trip (eg 2+ hours)on battery i would suggest getting a universal battery since they give several hours battery life and i have yet to find a battery for this model(if someone has please post below). Thank you for listening- Your Lord and Master -NPSF3000
