Strengths:rock solid stability. Never lets me down. I use it as my desktop & server OS. thousands of free tools. Awesome array of programming tools available.
Weaknesses:lack of latest hardware driver support. Unknown by the masses and therefore not many commercial software packages
Posted Jul 19, 2002 - Heir to the BSD Unix family, FreeBSD is the best free Unix availabe out there. None of the political quarreling associated with Linux. Just a damn good environment to work with.
Microsoft uses portions of the FreeBSD source code and complete FreeBSD systems (hotmail !) and it is no wonder why. Apple's OS X system is built for a large part on FreeBSD (and not Linux !). Again, no wonder if know the system.
Despite its reputation as a server OS, FreeBSD also makes for a wonderful desktop OS, provided the user has a good Unix background. After a careful set-up, it keeps going for years and doesn't cost a thing, beside a (free) contribution when you decide to purchase a CD set.
I develop software for a living and was fed up with Microsoft's expensive, virus prone systems. After my Windows 98 SE crashed and I was forced to buy Norton Utilities to 'repair' the OS, I concluded that it was ridiculous to buy 3rd party software just to keep the OS working. I changed to FreeBSD and have used it for 3 years now. I am very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone with at least an introductory background to Linux or Unix.
The system layout is very clean. If you are a student wanting to learn the lay-out of a serious OS, this one is very good to learn from.
If you ever have troubles, in the FreeBSD newsgroups many people are willing to help solve problems. I had them and people helped me out, for free.
GO ahead and try it. You won't be dissapointed.
