Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1 delivers true PC compatibility by enabling your Mac to run Windows applications, access PC networks, use Windows-only Internet applications and share files with PC-based colleagues. Virtual PC provides you with the functionality and compatibility of a Pentium PC through sophisticated software emulation of the standard Intel chip set and other hardware components. It's like putting a powerful PC inside your Mac. You can run your Windows or DOS software - including business, education, Internet and home applications - just as you would on a PC. Let's face it, you love your Mac but sometimes you need the ability to run Windows applications. With Virtual PC you can now emulate an entire PC without any additional hardware costs. Virtual PC lets you run one or more fully functional, emulated PCs on your Mac and is compatible with a full range of operating systems including Windows XP, 2000, Me, 98, 95, NT, as well as DOS. You are limited only by your current machine's RAM and disk space. Virtual PC is a true Macintosh application that uses standard Mac controls and commands. It has the user-friendly interface that is important to Mac users - keeping you productive and minimizing the learning curve. minimize

Strengths:

You can load not only Microsoft Windows but also any kind of Linux, too.

Weaknesses:

You have to get use to the fact that the response time is a little bit slower.

Posted Jun 28, 2004 - I have just recently started using version 6.1. Previously, I had been using version 5 for a while. It feels that it is slightly faster than the previous version. It is pretty stable, and have not had any problems so far. Installation was a breeze, just drag and drop. I like the fact that applications you are running on Virtual PC shows in the Dock of your Mac. It feels great to be able to show off your peers that a Mac can run Windows applications.

Strengths:

Get to run WindowsXP Pro on my PowerMac G4.

Weaknesses:

You're really going to need at least 512MB RAM to run this program.

Posted Oct 29, 2003 - This program is awesome. I've got some PC-only apps that I wanted to run on the Mac (so I could put away the Piece of Crud (P.C. for short)). I love the fact that it can save the state you're in so you're not rebooting every time. I've not even had 1 crash in the 8 months I've been using this program. Oh, and my power bill has gone down since turning of the P.C.

5 Star ReviewI have been using Virtual PC for several years now ...

Strengths:

Simple to use, decently fast, stable

Weaknesses:

Uncertain future, pricey

Posted Oct 18, 2003 - I have been using Virtual PC for several years now and have absolutely loved it. It has saved my butt in many instances when I am not near a Windows machine on which I can run Windows-only software. I even used to use it with Xilinx Foundation to do digital circuit design, and it was fast enough to do that on an iBook 2001. Now, I am running Virtual PC 6.1 on a PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz. The installation was extremely simple and only involved dragging over the application from the CD. I then installed Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4. This, too, was very brainless. Virtual PC runs you through all of the steps necessary to install whatever OS you want. The default settings are enough for most people, but if you really want to tweak how well Windows is running and get more devices running, then the functionality is all there. So far, it has been very stable and has run Windows perfectly. The only thing I am uncertain of is whether or not it will run well with Panther. I haven't tested it with the betas of Panther that Apple has provided, since it will be released in less than a week. I am also leery about its future. Now that Connectix is owned by Microsoft, the chances of Virtual PC receiving substantial support and improvement over the years seem slim to me, especially with Microsoft's recent axe to Internet Explorer. Hopefully, we will not need Virtual PC as more necessary software becomes cross-platform. Until then, though, Virtual PC will save the day!
