Strengths:Quality build, different profile sets, good software, customizable feel
Weaknesses:Price, shape of the mouse,
Posted Mar 24, 2008 - I am an novice gamer, just gettin into the gaming seen, and after a month or two of playing on my normal office mouse, it became quite apparent that it was time to move up to something better. My search began for a gaming mouse. After much research and reading the stats I came across the G9 gaming laser mouse. Unfortunately at the time the price was a bit high for me as the prices that I had come across were from $75 to $100. I decided to wait or look into another mouse. As I was looking around I ran into a deal on Amazon which made the mouse really affordable and I jumped on it.
Upon receiving the mouse and unpacking it I was extremely happy with the packaging and quality of the work put into the mouse. The Package contains the manual, the mouse, the interchangeable grips, and a small tin with the weights.
The mouse itself has two thumb buttons, two finger buttons, and one scrolling wheel, and at the base of button 1 there are two small buttons to help control on the fly DPI settings. The mouse is also corded.
The Grips come in two sizes one narrow precision grip, which is meant to be used more for fingertip style players, and one wide grip for those of us that like to manhandle the mouse as we play. The grips have a soft, yet sticky feel to help ease the hours of gameplay and also to help not lose grip in the heat of battle. The only bad thing about the mouse that I noticed was that I felt that it was a little more short and stocky then most other mice, and don't really let you rest your palm on the mouse, but rather it's kind of hanging there. It takes some time to get used to this feel.
The weights that come with the mouse are a total of eight. 4x4gms, 4x7gms. The mouse has a try in the back that allows you to add up to 4 of the weights in it and allows for a variety of options. I personally thought this was a great idea as I felt that my old mouse was just far too light. The case for the weights however i think are just a bit overdone. Perhaps if they just put it in plastic container they could have brought the price of the mouse down a bit.
The setpoint software that can be downloaded from the Logitech site is great. It allows you to change almost every setting for the mouse to any way that you would want it. It has the option of holding up to 3 profiles, and comes with the presets of General, Gaming, and Productivity. I had read in another review how you had to switch the profiles with a switch on the bottom which was kind of annoying. I really didn't like that idea, but i noticed that in the Setpoint software you can set it to automatically detect the program you are going into the required profile automatically. This is a great feature of the software and allows you to seamlessly switch between programs without any hassles. There are indicators on the top of the mouse that change color to indicate which profile you are in. This is cool, cause you can also set what colors you want to be in each profile, and there are several colors to choose from.
The scroller on the mouse also can switch via a button on the bottom of the mouse between smooth scrolling, and a ratcheted scrolling.
The mouse has a maximum DPI of 3200, and can report up to 1000 times per second via usb. This cuts down on any lag, and is unfortunate for anyone on the other side of the barrel of your gun, as you can respond and react much quicker without fear of lag. Overall I'd say if you are a novice gamer, and want a great mouse to play with, wait around and i'm sure you can find a good deal on it. If you are a pro gamer, then even without a deal it's a great mouse to have and use. I give it an 8.5/10.
