Not for General-Purpose Use
Strengths:Fast. Can download AVI from my video camera while I continue with my ordinary browsing, writing, scanning, etc.
Weaknesses:Crashes. Hardware incompatibilities. Slowdowns. Freezeups.
Posted Sep 21, 2007 - Hardware and software that worked on my Gigabyte motherboard doesn’t work with this, including Logitech webcam; Skype; VoSKY Internet Phone Wizard; Metal Gear Box external drive housing; and Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner. The problem with Skype and the VoSKY, in particular, is that the system freezes up momentarily, and all voice communication ceases. Sometimes the call is dropped altogether. I switched to using Skype and the VoSKY on my brain-dead Dell Inspiron 2200, and the problems went away. Acrobat, previously one of my most stable performers, suddenly stops in the middle of a scanning job, and requires anywhere from two to ten minutes to remember where it was and continue. The same thing happens in routine file operations. For example, selecting a couple hundred files from a list in Windows Explorer takes much longer than it did before.
Some of the problem may be that the Core 2 Duo CPU that I am using on this computer apparently does not support multiple threads to the same extent as the Pentium 4 that I was using previously. But when programs run better on an old Dell Inspiron than on a state-of-the-art system, you know something is wrong. I think I erred in relying on other users’ opinions without noticing any distinction between overclockers and general-purpose power users. Those of us who are trying to use multiple pieces of desktop hardware and software probably impose real-world stresses that don’t arise in a gaming context.
