Posted May 18, 2006 - Great cast. great cinematography, and great production and all, but I was really let down. In one of the featurettes in the special feature, Director Sidney Lumet says the movie was "perfect for the times." Well, given that we're talking about the decade of sappy endings and schlocky music scores in film, I have to agree. Probably the biggest letdown comes after a very majestic train station scene with lots of steam and an introduction to the characters for the set-up. The visuals are dark and forboding, but the train leaves the station with a dorky walz in the background. They apparently wanted to emphasize the glamour rather than the gloom (somebody was about to be killed after all), seeing as how they had snagged so many big names. Oh, and the ending - it really isn't that clever. Nor unpredictable. Fun to watch, but it's not a murder mystery.
And the PBS series has a much better Poirot.
