Summary: 2008-03-14 09:35:00 The appeal of Neil Simon has always been pretty much lost on me, but if you do have to see a movie based on one of his plays, this is probably the one to see. Haven't seen it in years (and don't have any burning desire to see it again), but I do remember laughing when I did, less because of the witty writing than because of the interplay between Lemmon and Matthau. Both actors were capable of going WAY over the top, but they were relatively restrained here, and good. Would have been interesting to see how Art Carney would have handled Lemmon's role. As I understand it, he played the role on Broadway, but when the movie was in the planning stages, the producers didn't want him, for whatever reason.
