Posted Oct 2, 2003 - an almost four. A nice movie about a teenager who grew up in England but parents are from India. She wants to play soccer, but her parents will not let her. they want her to live the traditional Indian customs. At first she has to sneak and play on an all girls team, her parents find out and want her to stop. eventually her dad takes her side. At the end she gets to live her dreams of a soccer player. Kind of predictable, but a pretty good movie.

What makes a film a foreign film (from the US point-of-view); a non-US studio, non-US filmmakers, made outside the US, or a non-English language? I typically concider a foreign film to be in a foreign language.

Posted Mar 15, 2004 - About a 3.5 in my opinion. Some good laughs, mainly from the two main characters' mothers, and they get a couple of good jabs in there concerning the Spice Girls. It went on a bit too long, but the characters were likable enough. Though the story had no real suprises, the film was worth watching.

Posted Nov 21, 2003 - At last! A teen movie that's not about girls fighting off hormone - driven dumbbells! Jess and her girlfriend were smart; their parents were not lamebrained bigots; the teens and their parents COMPROMISED [instead of Hollywood's parental cave-ins] -- talking about smashing stereotypes! I love culture clash -- Briton versus East Indian; teens versus parents -- especially when it's done right. This was done right.

Posted May 30, 2003 - "Big Fat Greek Wedding" was last summer's huge hit, and producers wanted to do the same with another independant film this year, "Bend It Like Beckham". This film not only seems like it could make a lot of money, but is almost a clone of MBGFG. The characters and nationalities are different, but the jokes are the same. "Bend It Like Beckham" tells the story of an Indian girl's struggle to become a professional soccer player under her overprotective mother's care. Her family eventually supports her with her decisions, except for her mother. The story is interesting, but characters a bit dull.
