Good Stuff.

Strengths: appearance, functionality, portability.

Weakness: sound quality, scratching issues...

Used to own an iRiver IHP-120. That player had the best sound quality that I have ever heard from a portable, granted headphones are a very important factor, even after testing the same headphones (Sony MDR-EX71SL, Sony MDR-V6, and Apple's own earbuds) on multiple players, I still find that iRiver has the best sound output.

Other than that, this is a pretty solid product. the surface does scratch easily, but what can you expect, it's clear plastic, get some plastic polish and polish it up from time to time. I use Meguiar's Plast-X. =)

The Best iPod Yet

Strengths: Great form factor, nice design, very usable, sharp display, good battery life, very fast

Weakness: Non-removable battery, scratches easily, lacks accessories

I have owned a number of different iPods and MP3 players from numerous companies. The iPod nano is definitely the best one yet. Here are my reasons:

Great form factor: The iPod nano is very, very slim and small. It fits in the small fifth pocket of a pair of jeans and barely sticks out. It basically disappears. However, it's not so small that you would completely lose it and have trouble finding it.

Nice design: To put it simply, the iPod nano is extremely attractive. It's shiny and looks cool. The black iPod nano is especially neat. It looks very sleek and chic. Furthermore, the design isn't just confined to looks. It works the way you expect, the scroll wheel feels great, etc.

Very usable: I was afraid that it would be hard to use it due to the small display and size of the scroll wheel. I was wrong. It works just like its bigger cousin and doesn't lack all of the functionality of the Shuffle while retaining the Shuffle's small size. Very, very cool.

Sharp display: The display is razor sharp. I was amazed. Even better, the colors are vibrant. Looking at pictures on it is fine despite the size of the display. You can easily read the text, too, and it's nice and bright.

Good battery life: Charge it once a day at most.

Very fast: The nano is very responsive. Going from song to song or from picture to picture is immediate.

Unfortunately, buying the iPod nano does have some downsides. These I can easily live with, though:

Non-removable battery: The battery will likely last you a long time, so why worry? Besides, a removable battery would only make the device bigger. Plus, I have yet to have an iPod battery die on me. Then again, I don't necessarily use mine as much as other people do.

Scratches easily: I think I already have a scratch on mine after a day of usage. I would recommend waiting until cases are more readily available for it. The tubes currently aren't shipping for another couple weeks even though I ordered them at the same time as the iPod nano.

Lacks accessories: I would like the iPod nano to come with a dock. It's really annoying that they just give you a small piece of plastic. Why not the piece of plastic and the dock? Also, there's no AC charger. You can only charge via USB, which is a pain, as your computer must be powered on to charge the iPod nano. I would recommend getting a USB to AC adapter, which is pretty inexpensive. I also personally dislike the switch to USB but can live without FireWire.

Overall, this is an awesome device, and I am absolutely in love with mine.

For scratches on the screen: Apple is replacing nano's that scratch 'too' easily. It's a known issue for them. Contact the retailer or Apple directly for more information.

I LOVE MY NANO!!

Strengths: SLIM, EASY TO USE, COMPACT, VERSATILE

Weakness: SHORT SHORT SHORT BATTERY LIFE

I love this little device. I have never been able to hold 300 songs in the palm of my hands. I listen to it in the car(I know, I know, that's not safe).

The playlist are easy to compile and I love the games on it. I would buy this product again and again!!

My POD!

Strengths: works, tiny, easy navigation, very light weight

Weakness: EXPENSIVE, Scratches easily

My ipod nano is great. I am a runner so I am constantly on the go and constantly get bored. having music to run to without feeling like you're carrying around a barbel is definatly nice. The ipod works and never skips. I bought a mini and when I would run with it not only did I hearweird clicking noises, the thing weighed way too much.

iPod Nano 4GB Black

Strengths: Size, usability

Weakness: Scratches very easily, limited size, price

I've owned iPods through the various generations, and this is the first in some time with a great wow factor. The Nano is small, has the great iPod interface and the screen is up to the job as small as it may be. To top it all off, it looks gorgeous!

Near total dock connector accessory compatibility is a huge plus for those who have accumalated such things since the 3rd generation iPod.

Perhaps the only two things wrong with it are its price/cost ratio (though being flash based and an Apple product, it is to be expected) and how easily it scratches.

Small but big sound

Strengths: Flash memory; no piano distortion or bass rolloff; small compact size; BLACK!--no white

Weakness: flex in LCD screen

This is a great improvement over the iPod mini line. First, they kept the proven user interface as well as the tactile buttons. There is no learning curve regardless if you owned an iPod or not. Second, a color screen that can display album art. While not neccessary for listening to music, often times, it comes in handy if you store digital photos on there for quick sharing. Finally, flash memory is less prone to breakdowns compared to hard disk based players.

Sonically, the Nano does not suffer from piano distortion or bass roll offs like the bigger, hard disk based 4th generation iPods. Some of you might not be able to hear the difference, but for low ohmns headphones (>32), I appreciate finally being able to use canalphones without distorting my original audio source. Still not up to snuff as the shuffle's sound quality, but leagues ahead of the 4th generation.

The negatives to this player do not impact sonic performace but can mar aesthetic functions. The body of the player is prone to scratching. You need the Nano-tubes definitely if you want to keep it in pristine condition. Me using it as a rugged gym player, I could care less. Also, the body of the nano makes the LCD screen flex. This is more of a concern for me because LCD screens are obviously the most precious component of this player. Yes, Apple's warranty is top notch and this is the first time where one should consider an extended warranty from Apple if you plan on keeping this one for a long time.

In short, it's an expensive player but the premium is justified in its ease of functions as well as the iTunes software integration.

AMAZING

Strengths: Unbelievably small, compact, easy to use like other Apple products, has a beautiful screen with bright vibrant colors... did I mention unbelievably small?

Weakness: Very easily scratched, seems kind of fragile, fingerprints show on the body and can smear

This new version of the iPod is great in its size, content, and bright, vibrant screen. The signature iPod click wheel makes it very easy to use, along with the USB cable that allows it to function like a flash drive. It will wow its users with its sleek new technology.
However, the disadvantages of this is the scratching and the smearing of fingerprints. This problem can be solved getting a protective cover such as the iPod Nano Glove.

Best iPod to date!

Strengths: Small size, Great sound quality, Photo feature and color, Great for jogging, Flash memory, Headphone port on the bottom

Weakness: Black easily scratches, No cases or aftermarket products yet, No iTrip and remote compatibility, No firewire compatibility (only USB)

I have owned a 3rd generation iPod and an iPod mini, and the nano just blows them away. It combines the best of both worlds and more. It sounds better than both of the previous ones I've owned and is in color with photo feature. It is an eye grabber and people are just so curious to see what it is. It also uses flash memory instead of a hard drive so it means it won't skip and has no moving parts which will significantly increase the longevity of it. Well done Apple!

Well..Duh! A solution to scratches!

Strengths: Size,sound quality,looks cool,flash drive

Weakness: scratches easily.

Many people are completely discouraged from buying a nano simply because of the "scratching issue"! Don't worry! First of all GET A CASE! Of course this will not stop all scratches so go buy some plastic polish! Some nanos however still scratch way too easily. If this is your case Apple will take back your nano and replace it! Now go read some other reviews and IGNORE their comments about scratching!

Ipod Nano 4GB

Strengths: clickwheel, quick charge time, easy to use menu

Weakness: shuffle option, PC compatiblity, separate charger

Apple still needs to work out the kinks w/this for optimal PC compatibility -I actually have to send mine back b/c I got the exclamation folder error (which is basically the ipod nano death screen).
However, for the time that it did work, I love the clickwheel feature, the color screen is very crisp. Charge time is quick (2-3hrs)
They could work on the shuffle option (it would be nice to have the option to shuffle a playlist, not just an album/artist or all songs). It's kinda annoying that you have to have this connected to your computer to charge (if you want to travel w/it, unless you have a laptop, you have to buy a travel charger).

First (and last) IPOD

Strengths: Size, portability and Sound quality

Weakness: Overpriced for features. Way too fragile.

This was my first IPOD purchase. Within a day it had many fine scratches, and now, two weeks later it looks years and years old. I am very careful with my equipment, and treated this thing with kid gloves. The screen display is starting to change colors, and is not very visable now because of the excessive scratching. I would advise anyone considering one of these to wait until Apple acknowledges the problem and corrects it. Mine is going back to the place of purchase today. Luckily for me they have a 30 day return policy.

The best of iPod, only smaller!

Strengths: Incredibly small, and uses flash memory (more durable than a hard drive). Hits the sweet spot between the feature-less Shuffle, and the big iPods.

Weakness: Screen is a little hard to read on some of the features (Contacts, Calendar, etc.)

Apple really got it right with the Nano- it is compact, durable, stylish, and not a compromise for anyone who has a not-too-big music collection.

I am a runner, and had to buy a Shuffle last year because my 15GB iPod would lock up (hard drive) on longer runs. The drawback to the Shuffle is that you cannot navigate through your songs easily, and it doesn't hold that much to begin with. The Nano, while not big enough to hold all of my music, is easily large enough for my girlfriend's favorite tunes, and if I can come up with a decent way to manage my music better, it may even replace my two current iPods.

Thin is in

Strengths: It's tiny! It weights next to nothing! It has most of the features that a regular iPod has!

Weakness: Does not work with the various photo connector or voice recorder accessories. Can't sync via FireWire

For those who though the iPod mini was still too big and didn't like the iPod shuffle because it didn't have a screen Apple has made amends. The iPod nano is a stunning piece of technology, and now claims the title of "my favorite iPod...EVER." It boasts most of the features of the full sized iPod such as color screen with clickwheel, playlists, calendars and contact syncing (with either Outlook on the PC side or Apple's Calendar and Address Book program on the Mac side) even though it is no thicker than 4 credit cards. The only features missing are firewire syncing, and the ability to upload photos from a digital camera. It also cannot be used as a voice recorder. For the gym and casual use these are features worth trading off for it's tiny, tiny, tiny size.

The sound depends entirely on how you encode your music and the headphones you use. If you encode at 160kbps or higher you'll love the way it sounds. It's as good as any iPod I've listened to. As always, an upgrade in earbud is always recommended. The supplied ones lack any bass capability or definition at all.

The nano comes in black or white. The nano looks great dressed in black, which is by far the most popular color. However, like all things black, it will show its battle scars off. White on the other hand will hide any inevitable scratches. You can always get a case for your nano, but that will take away from it's impossibly small size.

Unlike most iPods, the nano is shipped with very few included accessories. It comes with headphones, a USB to iPod Dock Connector cable, iPod software, and a dock connector adapter, which right now it useless since no accessories support it. It will be relevant in the coming months so don't throw it out!

If you are wondering if you should by a nano vs a different iPod you need to write the features you want in a player on paper in the order of their importance. If size and functionality are in the top two the nano is for you. If size and affordability are in the top two then look at the shuffle. and if maximum storage and functionality are in the top two then look at the full size iPod. Also consider how much music you have or want to keep on your player. For reference the 4GB nano will hold about 800 songs at 160kbps. The 20GB iPod will hold 4000 songs at that same bit rate.

Ipod Nano

Strengths: This thing is tiny - I forget it's in my pocket -Great sound -Tons of songs fit on this

Weakness: I will have to buy accesories - docking station and nano tubes to protect my investment -It's pricey

Well I bought mine and my sister and brother went and bought one's for themselves after seeing mine. I love this little buddy. I bought some Shure E2C earphones to block out sound for when I study. The headphones that came with the Ipod are excellent but I study in coffee shops and hate hearing others garbage conversations. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

Best ipod ever

Strengths: small, long battery life, high res color screen

Weakness: lack of accessories at ship, scratches easily

Apple can't stop releasing new and more gorgeous ipods every 6 months, and the iPod nano is their best ipod ever. It's smaller than the size of a business card and just as thick as a stick of gum. It's amazing, and the color screen is incredible. It's a full featured, 4GB ipod in the best form factor that Apple has released yet.

I have a couple of small gripes about the nano. First, there aren't many accessories for the Nano. You lack cases, armbands--it's hard to find any of these. Second, the ipod scratches really easily--you pay nearly $250 for something so nice and within an hour it starts getting scratched up. The shininess doesn't last forever.

Nonetheless, it's a great product. highly recommended.

Ipod Nano

Strengths: clickwheel, easy to use, everything that's great about an Ipod but only smaller

Weakness: can't shuffle just a playlist -must shuffle all the songs or a specific album

I love my nano!! -The battery life is awesome (14+ hours). The charge time is also pretty short (~2hrs). It's so small and compact, it can fit in any pocket (even in those tight jeans). I use it all the time (at least 4hrs/day). The sound quality is also very good. Haven't tried the photo feature yet, but the color screen looks awesome (very crisp and sharp).

iPod Nano

Strengths: Very compact, great sound, good looking

Weakness: Very prone to scratches

This is the first iPod I've owned, and I can say I've been very pleased with it. It's extremely compact and has excellent sound. I wish it weren't so prone to scratching, but bought an EZSkin to protect it. I'd recommend the iPod to others.

nano nano

Strengths: uber sexy design, physical size, audio quality

Weakness: it has been said enough, but i'll say it as well SCRATCHES EASILY, pedestrian mem capacity and battery life.

What can I say about the nano that hasn't been already said? incredibly small, sounds great, beautiful display, love the textured click wheel.

The ease of scratching is a real issue, I've had it for 2 weeks with near daily use and constant traveling. The excessive fine scratching (that results from general pocket storage) looks more like the luster is being rubbed off of the face. This will soon reduce the visibility of the display as well.

Besides having a scratch resistant surface, the only other things I could possibly want would be more battery life and mem capacity.

Overall great product and the best form and function of any ipod or other mp3 player.

iPod Nano PACKS A PUNCH!!!!!

Strengths: Responsive controls; bright and clear screen; support for photo viewing; syncs quickly; no skipping

Weakness: No syncing via FireWire; no support for viewing images on an attached TV; can't boot a Mac from it

A clear color screen, responsive and manageable controls, photo viewing, fast syncing, and impossibly thin. In my opinion the iPod nano is a nearly perfect fit for the middle of the iPod lineup, sounding great and mixing the best features of the shuffle, mini, and color iPod. Some may be disappointed by the lack of FireWire sync and consider the price of admission high given what you can have for $50 more than the 4GB model. I have no doubt there will be more ipod nanos with larger storage capacity.

first ipod

Strengths: long battery, cool desidn, high wow factor, fits, anywhere, chick magnet, very good sound, itunes very user friendly as with all Apple products. This thing even holds photos on a good color screen.

Weakness: screen could be bigger, scratches very easily, wheel too sensitive,

I have own other mp3 players and have resisted owning an ipod due to the size. I was planning on the 6gig mini just when the news came out for the nano. this one holds photos and fits in my jeans coin pocket, very cool! The black face scratches very easily if iI known that I would have been more careful. Sometimes when I put in my pants pocket the wheel will change the volume. Would like all black, instead of the silver back, I got free ingraving and think that would be a better look. I use a good quality headphone when at home or long travels and the buds for walking the dog and short trips, phones are better, invest in not to expensive ones.

Digitalrise MP4 Video Player -- beats ipod

Strengths: compact nano-like design plays video - 1gb plays over 5 full feature films, 250+ songs Great price - cost more than 1/3 LESS than the ipod Video

Weakness: can only get it in up to 2gb... which would be 10 films,, 1gb is standard

it all depends on how hyped you are about apple products. this product is clearly atleast 1/2 the price of the comperable apple product. it uses mpeg4 technology to compress data.

He's posting on another product because the iPod is not as cool as the other product and wants people to know about it. Moding your iPod Nano to do video is not shady. It is shady that Apple could have built video playback capability into the Nano but they didn't. Ever think of that? Oh, and did you think that Apple is shady because they won't allow you to put the music you've downloaded from iTunes on to any other device? Hmmm, sounds like Apple is the shady one here.

the price of trendyness

Strengths: synch's up with itunes in a subliminal manor. Small and compact. earphone port on bottom. simple everything. lcd (and a color one at that).

Weakness: Click wheel extremely sensitive, I havent been able to change that, but don't know if u can. Very very expensive for such a small amount of storage. Much too trendy for me, everyone has this.

Easy use, extremely small, very high price, almost nothing apple makes is compatible with anything else (a greedy company is a very bad thing in my eyes). too trendy. there are better deals out there.

Short and sweet

Strengths: VERY SMALL, bright screen, great battery life

Weakness: non-removable battery. When the battery dies, you have to replace the entire item.

I am hard on my electronics, so i HIGHLY recommend purchasing the Speck Tough Skin Case. I got this right away and it has survived me for a month so far, it's great! It has fallen, thrown (to test the durability.. I'm not that crazy!!)

Holds a great amount of songs, i wish it could hold a little more.
