4 Star Review Archos 604

Strengths:

- Very nice, solid look and feel - Very good video quality - Excellent PC connectivity - Excellent portability, easy to use in cramped or crowded conditions (airport, waiting room, exercise, etc.)

Weaknesses:

- Included doc is sparse - UI needs work - Ext speaker and included headphones so-so - Scheduler function is quirky - Somewhat limited without the DVR Station, DVR Station should be bundled in

Posted Jan 26, 2007 - The Archos 604 looks and feels gorgeous out of the box with nice heft and nifty gunmetal grey accents. A quick look at some of the included video clips shows off the great promise of the device, with excellent video quality. The kickstand looks flimsy but is surprisingly sturdy and should stand up to airplane use. The sound from the external speaker is almost non-existent, but as this is a personal video player, that seems like an acceptable flaw. However, the included headphones are no great shakes either, I compared against a pair of cheap noise canceling phones and a pair of nice Sony noise canceling phones, and even the cheap ones gave superior results to Archos' phones. Hooking the device to a PC is a snap, and the device very handily allows you to choose whether to connect it as a Windows media device or as a hard drive, which is an outstanding feature. Transferring even large video files in hard drive mode is very fast. I was surprised that, being such a technically advanced device, the included documentation is barely basic, you have to go to Archos web site to download the detailed user manual, or you can read it on the device as a PDF file, which seems cumbersome. The more detailed doc is better, but even then you will still find yourself puzzled and will have to resort to trial and error for some of the more advanced functions. The user interface (UI) of the device is inconsistent and needs some polish. Granted they are constrained by the number of buttons, but it is never entirely clear how to "back up" or exit certain menus or save changes. Sometimes you use the Menu key, sometimes you use the Cancel "X" key, sometimes you use the OK key. Getting video onto the device is a mixed bag. I am not a big YouTube or internet video person so I did only a cursory test of downloading internet video into Windows Media Center and then to the device, it works just fine. As far as getting larger media (i.e. movies) onto the device, recording directly from your Tivo or cable/satellite DVR to the 604 using the Archos DVR Station (a $100 upgrade) is by far and away the easiest method and yields very nice results. It makes one wonder why the DVR Station is not sold as a bundle. If you use Tivo-To-Go, good luck. Tivo claims you can synch to Windows media devices using Tivo Desktop and Windows Media Center, but I was not able to get it to work with the Archos. After much searching, I finally found an extremely useful freeware called TVHarmony AutoPilot at TVHarmony.com. The program is incredibly useful and does download from Tivo to the PC as AVI files, and then it's just a quick copy to the Archos. Beware that it takes a LONG time and is best run overnight. Interestingly, the audio quality from this program is outstandingly good. Ripping DVDs (which you legally own of course) to AVI files and then copying to Archos was another adventure. After many trials I finally settled on Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum which is a relatively effectve program. You can also use the Archos' Scheduler function in conjunction with the DVR Station to record programs without Tivo or some other DVR, but sadly the function is filled with quirky behavior, I can't really say that I could give the function a "pass" in my testing although it has worked intermittently. However, if you have a Tivo or other DVR it is unlikely you will use the Scheduler function anyway. All this being said however, I am quite happy with the device and am thrilled to be able to travel with a nice, portable and functional video device instead of a bulky portable DVD player. It is also wonderful to use while using exercise machines, etc. All in all, like most highly technical products, it has its fair share of warts, but I would still recommend it highly if you are a video fan.

1 Star Review Major issues with PlaysForSure media; returned product for refund

Strengths:

Bright screen, works well if you can get videos and music to transfer to the device. Buttons and OS have better interface than Creative Zen Vision.

Weaknesses:

Software glitches and bugs make product worthless to me. Cannot use Windows Media Device feature, and I would have used this player 75% of the time to listen to music from Napster.

Posted Mar 9, 2007 - In some cases, I agree with many of the positive reviews given by other reviewers. The screen is bright, the interface is intuitive, and most features work well. However, since I bought the player I encountered an issue where I would plug the USB cable in, select "connect as Windows Media Device", and click OK. When I opened Napster or tried to view files on the device, it crashed and rebooted to the ARCHOS logo. I tried the player on three separate computers to confirm the cause wasn't a configuration problem with my computer. I called tech support, and they told me that the cause of my problems is that ARCHOS does not support Windows Media Player 11. They require everyone to downgrade to WMP 10 and plan to address the issue in a "future firmware upgrade." However, I downgraded to WMP 10 and the problem was not solved. (I should note that even if WMP 10 worked, it is not an acceptable solution because Windows Vista does not support it.) I called again and they said I had a defective product. I returned it and got another, but the same problem exists. Since I listen to music more than I watch videos, and have to use the Windows Media Device feature to transfer that music, this device is useless to me. I returned it for a refund and bought a Creative Zen Vision W instead. It really is a shame. This would by far be the best player on the market if ARCHOS would resolve their software issues. As it is, though, there are just too many bugs to make this player worth purchasing.

5 Star Review Fantastic screen

Strengths:

Very nice viewing in widescreen. 30 gig hard drive holds plenty of movies or music

Weaknesses:

many items have to be purchased separately

Posted Oct 11, 2006 - I needed a media device to entertain me during frequent wait times - airplanes or hospital waiting rooms and notebook computers ran out of juice too soon and were bulky to carry. I can download movies to the Archos 604 and with a spare battery have up to 9 hours playback. The wide screen is great. It can fit in your pocket. I initially had some trouble finding suitable software to rip dvds to load onto the Archos, but finally settled on Xilisoft DVD ripper which does a good job and is fairly fast. This thing will hold a bunch of movies, plus music, plus TV shows. Plenty of entertainment. I like it.

1 Star Review Archos 604 WiFi- rating

Strengths:

Touch screen

Weaknesses:

No AV cable, No DVR staton, Poor Audio, Touch Screen dones not work many times, Need plug ins software

Posted Jan 1, 2007 - Archos 604 WiFi No AV cable, No DVR staton, Poor Audio, Touch Screen dones not work many times, Need plug ins software I have compared many other similar products/features but Archos 604 WiFi it is simply worthless product – as compared to many other similar products. It should not cost more than $200 as such! It is not a show piece- once you buy it we should be able to do something rather than just jeeping on a shelf! No AV wire, No DVR station, no playback of movies, no plug ins/software and codec errors!! Give me a break! I am giving lowest ratings for these reasons/problems: 1. A product of $450 and they are so poor that they can’t even supply AV cable? I will cost less than 50 cents for a company if get it from china. iPod cable is available for just $ 3 online. One can even make/modify cable, please see below: www.anythingbutipod.co... 2. I could not play any movies that were stored in iMac. Mp4 or even AVI movies did not work! Unit displayed a message that we need to buy plug software in from Archos website. It is another trick/gimmicks to cheat people and force them to buy accessories and software. I converted MPEG4 movie to AVI from QuickTime software but it did not play in Archos unit. 3. I was told by a tech person (pre-sale) that this unit gives dual display - on TV as well as in the handheld unit. But once button to TV out was pressed, screen became blank! A major defect! How can I forward or reverse or stop or pause? I have to switch back to unit and then again back to TV. In comparison, once out put to TV is selected in iPod and Vision M (from Creative) these units shows interface on unit though but you can/t see movie in unit itself- but nothing in Archos 604! I wanted to use this product so that I can show movie/clips to audience (by using big screen projector) and be able to watch (at the same time) what is being displayed in handheld unit. But this unit is just hopeless about such regards. 4. I got it from Sams Club and even the sales person was little confused once he read that unit description that it comes with DVR saddle. We did not know what saddle is but we assumed that it is a bundle and comes with a DVR station. However it turned out that a saddle is a strip/piece of plastic junk, which costs no more than few pennies for Archos to manufacture in bulk! 5. Even 20 years old camcorders have technology of using AV cable which can serve both purposes- out to TV and as well as for recording in camcorder Ecen mini DV camcorders have AV wire which can record and play too. Why Archos did not use same technology? Obviously they wanted to make fool of us- to make a DVR station! It is just anther way of rip off! 6. Most of the times, unit failed and did not work- regarding touch screen features. I had to calibrate several times –built in feature to repair it so much hidden that it was tough to find a way to repair it. It is almost last feature on screen. Even after calibrations, same problems persisted. 7. Audio is very very poor quality (compare with Samsung, creative or ipod nano) . Whether I use flat, rock, live it does not make much difference! Eventually I returned unit back to Sams Club.

3 Star Review Archos 604

Strengths:

Large screen, 30 GB capacity

Weaknesses:

Inadequate accessories (Optional DVR station)

Posted Apr 1, 2007 - The device has fairly large screen which works reasonably well as far as touch-screen functionality is concerned. Ample capacity to store music or videos. Biggest drawback is that one has to buy the DVR station as an add-on to be able to record directly from TV. To buy that, you have to part with an additional $100.

Posted 1 year ago - new version has larger screen i consider the competition as follows: Nokia internet tablet n800 iPhone iPOD video or touch each of them has their pros/cons and depends on what you looking for. The best thing i like abt archos is its DVR capability if u buy the holder.

4 Star Review Quality PMP

Strengths:

Fantastic, customizable menu with icon-based navigation; Brilliant widescreen display; USB mass storage compliant; Replaceable lithium ion battery

Weaknesses:

Expensive accesories, average speaker

Posted Mar 29, 2008 - Archos 604 is about as small as you could reasonably expect for a device with a 30GB hard drive (enough for 85 movies) and such a large display (4.3"). The glossy widescreen is stunning, bursting with more than 16 million colors and the menu is really user-fiendly. Also, 604 has you covered, with support for MP3 and protected WMA files and the ability to display album art. Sound quality was just acceptable with decent bass response though. The big con for this player is you have to buy additional DVR and portable chargers which cost you additional $100. All in all, it comes to offering a fully featured PMP if without the plethora of accessories.

5 Star Review archos overall

Strengths:

screen size, capacity, capability

Weaknesses:

foreign customer service, lack of proven commercial success outside of Europe

Posted Aug 8, 2007 - This is very simple, if you just want a device to carry around, with mp3 playback, movie playback, pdf files support, and everything you could want. For example the ipod does not include anything that connects to your tv in a bundle but people do not complain about it. It simply lack of popularity what hurts this device. Archos has been making protable devices for 20 years now, they are a proven company in europe.

3 Star Review Great concept, needs help on execution

Strengths:

Gunmetal color, looks sharp, easy to use

Weaknesses:

Need to buy extra accessories

Posted Jun 27, 2007 - I bought this unit as a replacement for my laptop on plane rides or when at somewhere where I am waiting. The look and feel of the unit is sharp and professional loking. However, I am not a fan of having to spend tons of money on all these accessories. It does not come with a mount and had to spend the money on the DVR station and the case stand. However, despite all this, I love the fact that the unit is widescreen.
