2 Star Review Giving up...

Strengths:

Excellent size and easy to use. Really like the product when it turns on.

Weaknesses:

Has an issue with not being able to turn on. Firmware gets corrupted easily.

Posted Feb 8, 2006 - Had this product for about 10 months and had to return it 3 times. I've had to reinstall the firmware from the website several times. Spent many O'nights problem solving. Now it doesn't work at all. Overall wouldn't buy another one. Something went wrong in the manufacturing process on this. Good design but poor quality.

4 Star Review great player for the price.

Strengths:

sounds great, great battery life (20+ hours on a rechargable AAA), fairly robust ( my daughter has dropped it many times)

Weaknesses:

the SD expansion is touchy. I don't really like the menu structure. You really have to punch down through the menu structure to choose a picklist.

Posted Jan 25, 2006 - Overall it's been a great player. My wife is one of the most non-technical people around and she loves it. My 6 year old daughter listens to it for hours on end. I've had problems with mine. Every once in a while it will look like it's playing but nothing comes out the headphones. I found that if you take the SD card out (put one in if there wasn't one in there) it will start working again. This also solved a problem I had where the whole unit wouldn't power up.

1 Star Review Cheap and unreliable

Strengths:

Cheap

Weaknesses:

Unreliable.

Posted Dec 29, 2005 - Failed after 3 weeks. Can not be turned on. Nothing happens after turning on even with new battery. Same Terrible customer service for 30 min on hold to their support then directed me to their tech support, which redirected me to system.s2gstore.com/..., which is for sales only. DON'T buy it. You are buying headche.

4 Star Review I highly recommend this MP3 player!

Strengths:

Inifintely expandable memory. Easy to use (and familiar) interface (similar to Motorola MP3 player). Has bookmark feature for long audio files (Ancestor podcast!). Does not require iTunes!

Weaknesses:

Metallic front always has finger prints on it. Battery life shorter than expected, no car adapter functionality. Cannot access memory chip via Rio Music Manager, have to remove from device and use com

Posted Nov 28, 2005 - I purchased this device to replace an older Rio Nitrus (w/ 1.5gb micro drive). The Nitrus died an unfortunate death due to dropping it too many times. With flash memory, I do not expect this to happen again. I had originally purchased a 256mb RCA Lyra, but found it did not have any functionality to bookmark your current location. This made listening to hour long audio books impossible during my short commute to work. A new feature in this device is the FM Tuner with record functionality. The reception has been remarkably well, despite having no visible antanea. Tested along a rural road with very little static heard. Very pleased. Uses single AAA battery, which makes it handy for travelling. My previous Rio used internal rechargable battery which required carrying a seperate charger or car charger (I used a Sony car kit with my Nitrus).

1 Star Review Great if it worked

Strengths:

SD Memory slot

Weaknesses:

2 units quit working Lack of music sorting ability

Posted Oct 9, 2005 - I bought this unit because of the SD memory card slot and the armband. The first unit would turn itself off randomly and after about a week it wouldn't come back on at all. Swapped it for a new unit which worked great about 3 months. This week it played about 30 seconds and started making a loud buzz. Won't come on at all now. Think it's time to look for something else.

Strengths:

Durable shell, Low battery Consumption, Cheap battery source, Small form factor, Compatible with all brands of SD cards

Weaknesses:

Below Average FM reception, Unproven track record

Posted Jun 25, 2005 - With so many refurbished models available on the market, it seems as though there are serious problems with reliability. The FM reception is notoriously bad and should not even be considered when purchasing. After rebates, still one of the cheapest on the market. Realize that something MUST have gone wrong in terms of quality when the manufacturer offers a rebate on a refurbished product.

Strengths:

light weight, compact design. Good sound quality and very comfortable sport earpieces. easy read display.

Weaknesses:

comparatively low volume output and weak FM reception.

Posted Jun 24, 2005 - If you wanted to buy mp3 player just for running then go for it. otherwise overall as a MP3 player it has several weaknesses. such as volume is not high enough, FM is very weak at times and stopwatch is not that great. Overall, it is OK.

Strengths:

good sound quality, expandable storage

Weaknesses:

bad FM tuner

Posted Jun 15, 2005 - nice compact design. the storage is expandable. Before purchaing I expected to use the FM a lot, but it turned out to be not useful at all. Most of the time I couldn't get a good sound from the FM tuner. the sound quality of MP3 playing is good. I have one problem with the USB cable. It is very inconvenient to use cable to copy files. I have another MP3 player which has a USB male plug so I can use it just like a USB drive. Now I use a card reader to transfer files between the computer and this unit.

Strengths:

This unit is small which makes it easy to carry around. Also, having the ability to expand the storage space up to 1GB comes in really handy.

Weaknesses:

The unit itself it a bit flimsy. The cover for the USB port can be easily lost and would allow more dust/lint into the unit.

Posted Jun 11, 2005 - Overall, this unit is just average. It's good that you can expand the storage to fit more music. The center of the unit itself is easily prone to smudging and fingerprints. The settings aren't that easy to sort through and take a while to figure out.
