Posted May 29, 2005 - This player is a simple mp3 player. It doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles of other players such as voice recorders or displaying photos. The nice thing about that is that it was very easy to figure out how to use it without needing to consult the directions. You can customize the play mode to playing songs one after the other, repeating all songs in a loop, repeating one song over and over again, randomizing the order of the songs, and also Shuffle Repeat(though I didn't play with that one). You can change the equalizer settings to one of 5 presets (normal, rock, jazz, classic, pop). Other things to customize are the contrast on the screen, the length of time the backlight is on, and power saving time. Sound quality is great (even with the provided earbuds) though I'll admit I'm not much of an audiophile. To put more songs on it, you slide out the built-in USB plug (which does indeed lock into place for me, unlike what another reviewer said on the 256mb version of the ldp 400..maybe they didn't extend the USB plug all the way?) until it clicks slightly to signify it has been fully extended. Plug that into a USB port and the mp3 player shows up as an external drive. You can put other types of files on it as well but with just 128mb of space, carrying other files really further limits how much music you can carry. Nice thing was that it was compatible with both PC and Macs without needing to install any new software or drivers. I had gotten this from the clearance section and it looked like the previous owner who returned it might've dropped it (some scuff marks on the plastic body). So my biggest disappointment with this model was that when jogging with it, it would stop playing. I suspect it was because the AAA battery was getting loosened from making a good connection with the contacts during the shaking from jogging. If I gently shake the player and listen, I can hear a clicking noise that sounds like the battery moving around. It might've been just this one player (since I had gotten it from clearance). When I'm listening to it while sitting still, it plays without any problems. I can generally restart it by shaking it a little or removing and putting the battery back in but then I have to fast-forward back to the song I was last listening to and it's more hassle than I had wanted. I decided I wanted more space than just these 128mb (about 25 songs) so I'll be returning this one and looking for a bigger one. I'm disappointed though since this one really was easy to use.
