FM Tuner, Voice Recorder - LCD - Silver - MPN: SDMX11024A18
Strengths: One of the smallest and most portable, with built FM tuner w/20 presets, and voice recorder. Has the biggest storage capacity (1GB)in its class! (+)battery monitor.
Weakness: Uses only AAA battery to power up(can't use AC adapter)
Just bought mine today and for> 9hrs of operation, battery still shows only 1/3 of its life has been used up. This is my first MP3 player and I've nothing to compare it with re: sound quality. Controls are easy to use and menus are easy to navigate and get used to. A real plug N play, my pc recognized it right away as Removable disk. It can also be used as storage media to transfer documents, pictures, etc. With 16hrs songs of MP3 it can hold, that for me is more than enough. So far everything this player does is OK and I'm well satisfied with the deal I got it for(On sale, plus the instant and mail-in rebates). One thing I'm not sure though... and still deciding whether I shld get the $30 2-yrs protection plan or not. I'm thinking soon after that plan expires this thing will be at the verge of its obsolescence.

TopStrengths: Ample file storage, lightweight, easy to use
Weakness: The ear buds and carrying case are cheap quality but the player itself is great
This player is very easy to use. Your PC will recognize it as an external hard drive as soon as you plug in the USB cable. File organization is simple-just drag and drop as you would with any other files on your computer. Files can be organized before loading them on the player and re-organized just as easily by simply plugging the player in and moving them around. Sound can be customized with the equalizer in several settings. Music can be categorized into separate files for easy organization and navigation. For users that complained about the annoying feature of each song fading in instead of just starting normally, no problem: Read your user's manual. That's a feature that can be turned on or off just like many other features on the player. As far as difficulty opening the battery door, it practically opens itself. I don't understand how some users can find this challenging. If you have a brain and a thumb the door will open effortlessly.
This player is well worth the money and is a bargain in my opinion. Extremely user-friendly, simple to use, and with 1GB of storage probably more than you will ever need.

TopStrengths: small size
Weakness: not yet found
For the price performance ratio this is the best mp3 player on the market. I purchased it at circuit city for 129.99 with $10 mail in rebate. Took it out of the box and pluged it into the usb port. It detected it right away and i was able to move songs bck and forth. Also have used it as a date transfer medium to move file from computer to computer. It is made of very cheap plastic but that allows it to be very light. If dropped feels like it would break in half so just don't drop it. Its easy to navigte through the menus. The ear buds are a little uncomfortable and the are uneven in lenght (the left one's wire is half the size of the rigth, not sure why but no big deal) 512mb is perfect for what i need. Use in the gym and a 100 song is more than enouh.Fm radio is decent enough. Size is very small and the are band it not bad. I have ran for a couple hours and it doesn't bother me. Now a big part the audio quality, can't say i'm an audiofile but it sound pretty good to me. There are so many things tht can affect the sound quality. The actualy mp3 song quality, the players abilty to reproduce the sound and lastly the ear buds sound quality. Alot of people say iriver has excellent quality sound but i have not been able to compare the two. I wanted a m3 player with fm radio and small enough to run with and for the price i paid for the 512 mb model it is hands down the best value

TopStrengths: Light weight,FM Radio,Voice recorder.1gb of storage.
Weakness: The user guide cd that comes with the mp3 is not very detailed on each function.
The player comes with a quick start guide that I would recommend reading first. This will get you powerd up and at least able to listen to the radio. I was lucky not to break the battery door trying to get it open. I kept pushing in the direction the arrow on the player showed and it would not open, I know more force! It still would not open, OK lets look at this quick start guide: While PUSHING DOWN slide door in direction of arrow. works perfect. The hinges on the battery door seem like they could break easy. I would recommend being gentle during battery changes. I have been getting about 8hrs of battery life with NiMH rechargeable batteries. The FM radio works well where I live and I am happy with it. Have only goofed around with the voice recorder and all I can say about it is that it works and would be a nice feature for someone who would use it. The mp3 is easy to navigate. Anyone that can navigate basic features on a cell phone should have no trouble. With 5 minutes of pushing buttons and seeing what they do will get you started. Downloading songs from your computer is very easy if you have Windows Media 10. If you are using an older version definatily upgrade to Windows Media 10 it will reconise the mp3 as soon as it is pluged in and downloading from your libary is very easy. One feature I like is when the player starts a new song it fades into the start of the new song. I also like the shoulder strap that comes with the player. I use mine alot for excersing the player is so light you dont even know its there. I wear a Polar heartrate monitor when excerising and have had no interferance with it from the mp3 player. The only problem I have had is with the head phones I either push the plug jack in to far or not far enough and have no sound, this is probally my fault. Other than that it is a great lightweight player and am very happy with the choice I made.

TopStrengths: Runs on a single AAA for about 15 hours
Weakness: FM radio cuts in and out of one ear in the headphones, this never happens while listening to MP3's
Fairly simple to use. Switching from MP3 to FM radio took a little while to figure out without reading the manual. Plays VBR MP3's. Voice recorder playback sounds alright, but is nothing special.

TopStrengths: 1GB, Extremely light weight & small size. Good sound, features, AAA battery, and durability.
Weakness: Headphones included stink, battery life is really good but it drains before you know it, and it doesn't make playlists.
This MP3 player is a great deal- under $100 1GB that stores up to 480 wma's. The Sandisk is the same size if not, smaller than an ipod shuffle and it has a screen. It can also hold moer songs than the shuffle. One of the greatest features is that it works like a portable USB device, in other words No Programs To Download! In minutes after getting it, I had over 100 songs on it and you can arrange the songs in folders any way you like and its no different than making a folder on your regular computer. I would highlt recommend it for a first time MP3 user or someone who listens to one while woring out.

TopStrengths: Price, Easy Interface, Size, Audio Quality, Radio, Battery, Display
Weakness: No Line-In, No custom EQ, No Direct USB (like thumb drive)
This thing works great. This is my fourth portable mp3 player- I have owned Rio, Irock, Bantam, etc. and have found a fully featured player for a good price. Honestly, i have learned from experience that you don't want to buy the most expensive players that you find because you will always be dissapointed. I tested this one in comparason to the IAudio and Iriver types of these devices and found this one to be the best - namely because all of the feature that it has work well rather than having ten features that work poorly. The built in radio is exceptional(works well through cement walls), most handheld radios of this quality are larger than the whole unit and cost $40. The voice recoder is very easy with a direct button to the function (no need to dig through the menu) and is of fairly good quality with similar units at $50. Then there is the space 1GB! That is enough for 500 songs! The flash memory also does not skip and I have found that flash players have better audio quality because the lack of moving parts. The display is of very good quality as well, though it is small like the unit. I am a musian and an audiophile, years of training and I have to say that this is a value at the $130 I bought it at and i would recommend this over any Microdrive player or Harddrive player because of the features listed and all quality. Oh, Did I mention that it comes with a carrying case and an armband that allows you to use the unit fully and prevents scratches?

TopThere is a user equalizer setting that is customizable. Note, the equalizer works only with mp3 player not with FM.
Strengths: Small compact size, many features, light, nice cool look, and everything else about this product.
Weakness: There are none that should prevent you from buying this product, but it does take time to get used to how to use the product.
After much research, my boyfriend decided to get me this mp3 player. I decided to research on it after I recieved it from him and I am quite impressed at what this player can do. I have played with it and have learned all of the features of this player. It is such a nice player. The sound quality is very good. I do not hear the clicking sound that many people say they hear. I have not encountered any problems or difficulties with this player. I am so happy. Transferring music onto the player is extremely easy- drag and drop- or you can use Windows Media Player 10 to easily transfer your music. I have over 200 music on the player right now and still have a lot of space left. I have organized my music into folders and it helps me find my songs easier. The FM has great reception in my area. The voice recording feature is great for my class lectures in college. The player is extremely small and looks great. It comes with a carrying case that keeps the player from getting scatched. Overall, I love this product and will not trade it for any other player, except maybe for another one with the same brand, same product, with a greater storage capacity!

TopStrengths: Good storage capacity, price, style(look), voice recorder, equalizer, easy to use, FM radio
Weakness: Needs a cord to connect to USB, the headphones that come with it are bad (buy yourself another pair), AAA battery
I bought myself the 1 GIG Scan Disk mp3 player on pricegrabber. It came out to about $133 including shipping. GREAT deal compared to Best Buy selling it for $259. I actually paid less for the 1 GIG on here than the 512 mb one at best buy (512mb is $129 not including tax @ BB)
I truly think this mp3 player is really worth the money if you paid the price I paid through pricegrabber. The only reason I didn't buy an ipod is because ipods don't have FM radio, I love to hear the latest music on radio stations and it's a nice break from my same old mp3's. The FM radio is actually good and I get reception in places i didn't get before. I've only had 1 mp3 player by compaq before this one. This was a long time ago so my experience with mp3 players is light but I am a music fanatic and I can say the sound quality is a little bit above average (this is my opinion while using the crappy headphones it came with I've yet to buy new ones)
The battery life is OK, after about 3-4 hours 1 bar out of 3 had dissapeared. I haven't compared this to any mp3 player with AA battery, but it's not a problem to me really, all you need to do is get a battery recharger with 2 AAA batteries, use one while you have the other charging and switch them when needed.
The paper manual doesn't say much but if you pop in the cd it explains in detail how to use the mp3 player and it's pretty easy.
In conclusion, if this is your first or second mp3 player purchase you won't be dissapointed with this product, especially if you paid the price I paid for a 1 GIG. 1 GIG allows you to put more high quality songs wich are larger in MB size. However if you plan to pay retail ($259) search around because other mp3 players have more options like radio recording and such.
I am very satisfied with this product

TopWhich of the vendors at pricegrabber did you guys use? I've not heard of most of them so I'm a bit nervous about using them.
Thanks!
Strengths: Price, Size, FM Tuner presets, file transfer capability
Weakness: None found yet
This is my first MP3 player and I've nothing to compare it with so my review is entirely subjective. Easy to use controls, menus are a breeze to navigate. True plug n play ability, my system recognized it immediately. 1 gig size gives storage for 100's of songs depending on the recorded quality and plenty of room for file transfers.
Price was a bargain at $112 after a $30 rebate. Will have to see how it holds up. Would have preferred a bit more durable case.

TopStrengths: Value - Price to features, storage capacity, FM tuner, extremely small and portable.
Weakness: Initially learning to navigate the menu takes a little effort, but should be expected with any device that needs to sacrafice display size to keep itself compact.
Before buying one each for my sons, I read reviews on many other sites covering most all the available mp3 players. After using theirs, I bought one for myself too! Though in some reviews this was criticized for not having the ability to use shuffle/random play or use play lists, the criticism was not accurate. There is definitely a shuffle play feature, and play lists are accomplished through the use of folders (directories). The quality of the FM receiver was also remarkable. Sure it's possible to get a bigger box with higher storage capacity, but at least for me, 16 hours of high resolution mp3s (the equivalent of 18 full CDs) is plenty. If I want more I just swap some from my PC in seconds. In conclusion, the 1GB capacity and it's minature size when combined with price make this the best value in mp3 players as of Feb '05.

TopStrengths: Is small in size, sound quality is good.
Weakness: Instruction manual basically sucks. You have to go to the website to actually learn how to use the mp3 player.
This mp3 player is my first and I think that it's pretty awesome. I'm in highschool, so I am practically listening to music 24/7, and it stores plenty of music for me. I have about 230 songs on my mp3 player. The sound quality is great, and I love how the fm radio is built into it. Instruction manual that comes w/ it only tells you basic stuff like which button's what, and how to upload music or whatever. I had to go to the website to actually figure out how to use this thing. And you obviously have to buy new earphones, but I already had a pair so that wasn't a problem. Sandisk is kind of a cheap brand, but it's not like I need a total expensive mp3 player. Usually other students in my school prefer to buy ipods, but I'd rather not waste my money. Overall, this is an awesome mp3 player and the price is pretty reasonable. I bought it at $132 from pricegrabber, and that's not considered that expensive.

TopStrengths: Great sound, small, FM tuner, fast transfer from pc via USB2, battery life about 10 hrs on 1 AAA battery, good price vs similar sized (capacity) players, nice blue LCD screen
Weakness: cannot record from fm tuner, plastic case looks cheap
I have used 2 other flash mp3 players and I can say that so far this is the best one! I have used the Buslink mp3 & Creative Muvo2 players. This Sandisk is smaller and easier to handle. The joystick is small but easy to navigate. The sound quality is superb (of course, as long as your source mp3s are good quality). Copying my mp3's to the player is fast via Windows Explorer. Windows detects this player as another drive - just drag & drop.
The plastic case looks cheap. I dropped this player once on the sidewalk but it didn't break and still continues to work! So I guess it might take a little impact.
The digital fm tuner picks up a good signal and sounds good. However, the built in recorder cannot record FM radio signal like the IRIVER players. The recorder can record your voice for quick notes - like where you parked your car or what time to pick up your girlfriend!
If you're looking for a smaller, flash (non HardDrive) based mp3 player (vs the IPOD), this is a good alternative. Overall, I'm very happy with this player!

TopStrengths: Led Display, equalizer, small size, radio, microphone, portable usb drive, works off aaa batteries.
Weakness: Carrying case is plastic and flimsy. Manual is very vague.
Versitility:
-Mp3 Player
-Portable Usb Drive
-FM Radio
-Records(Microphone)
It's small, light weight, you can use it as a portable usb drive, listen to the radio with it, record a meeting or note to self using its built in Microphone. Its stores up to 1 gb of stuff (music, files, programs).
It's not hard to figure out how to use the mp3 player, but don't look for the manual for help because it covers only the basic aspect's of this mp3 player.
I've had it for about 7 hours now, and I think it's a great portable mp3 player for it's price. If your looking for a mp3 player / usb drive I recommend this sandisk 1 gb mp3 player. I'm very happy with my purchase. I got it for $139.99 + $5.90 for shippping = $145.89 - $20 dollar mir from sandisk = $125.89 - $5 dollar mir from pricegrabber.com = 120.89.

TopStrengths: EXCELLENT sound quality, easy to use, light-weight & long battery life.
Weakness: Feels a bit "flimsy", but is holding up well thus far.
Never had an MP3 before and am not very "tech-oriented", but this was simple to use & the sound is incredible (it even impressed my musician husband, who I bought it for)! You won't believe how tiny it really is until you see it & you won't be disappointed with the sound quality or long battery life. It's very light & simple to operate. We downloaded music CD's into it with ease. The FM stereo feature is a plus and also sounds amazing! I highly recommend as it's a great device for the price.

TopStrengths: Compact size, 1GB memory, FM tuner (with 20 presets), Voice recorder, ability to save unlimited files to a folder, ability to random shuffle even between folders, AAA battery (and battery life), price
Weakness: Ear buds, would prefer a built in USB plug
The San Disk SDMX1-1024-A18 v2 1GB MP3 player, in my opinion, is an exceptional player with great quality. I was extremely impressed with it once I got it out of the box. A few of the key things that impressed me the most are:
-The FM Tuner Quality and the ability to have 20 presets.
-The 1GB storage size for the price
-Although previous reviews stated that there was a 122 file limit per directory, I was able to save unlimited files (as many as can fill 1GB) into one directory. Even though I was able to save unlimited files into one directory, I still find it more beneficial to use multiple folders (for organization), because you're still able to randomly shuffle between all of the folders as though they were only one directory.
-The easy to read display and the scrolling text for the file name.
-The AAA battery and it's long lasting life. Buy some NiMH batteries and a charger and you're set and won't have to worry about not having a spare battery.
This thing amazes me every time I pick it up and discover something new.
A few of the weaknesses of this player are:
-The ear buds. Definitely not the best out there.
-I would prefer to have a built in USB plug so that I don't have to worry about carrying the cable with me. (not a big deal, but it would be nice) An advantage of the cable would be if you don't have front access USB then the cable would give you easier access if you're going to be plugging and un-plugging the player a lot.
-I would prefer a metal body, but the plastic body seems to be well designed and I don't see it being a problem. The light weight is also a plus.
If you're looking for a player I would highly recommend this one. Although I've only had it two days, I've been impressed with discovering something new that it can do, each time I pick it up.
Although the ear buds are a dissapointment and my preference to a built in USB plug, I give it 5 stars because I believe that it is one of the best and I would highly recommend it.

TopI have only just got mine and it will only play the one MP3 file I've got, but not the millions of WMA files. Did you have any trouble with that?
Strengths: Small Size/Easy Portability. Good Battery Life. Easy to add/remove files.
Weakness: Earbuds are cheap.
This is a great little MP3 player with plenty of storage. It takes a little bit of time to figure out all the ins and outs of this little machine. The user manual is pretty useless. Only very vague explainations of functions are given to the user. The earbuds are lousy. No bass, no clear treble, but a lot of in between. You will need new headphones to get the quality sound this player is capable of producing. Overall, this is a great MP3 player for the person on a budget.

TopStrengths: Small size, .mp3 & .wav playback, recorder, fm tuner
Weakness: Written document included is minimal
This a a very small and lightweight player. It's easy to carry around or it can hang on a chain around your neck. The player is so light you'll hardly know it's there.
For the size and price, this little device offers lots of functionality as a wav & mp3 player, voice recorder, and fm tuner. The sound is pretty good...however, you do lose sound quality due to compression...but this was no surprise to me.
The documentation that comes with the unit is minimal, but it is not difficult to figure out how to use the unit, and after pushing buttons for 5-10 minutes, you'll have the process mastered.
I wanted a unit that was small and light to carry to the gym and for other sports, and this one fits the bill nicely.
I bought this unit as a gift to my husband after having bought the 256mb player for myself.

TopStrengths: Very compact and light, blue backlighting easily legible, fast USB 2.0 transfers (acts as removable drive, no drivers needed), FM tuner
Weakness: Plastic encasement feels fragile (thin battery lid), no support of playlists or random playback, not rechargable, no USB external plug (4-pin cable), not clippable to clothing
I purchased the Sandisk player during a rebate sale at EBuyer a few weeks ago, and have used it around the house and while jogging. Overall, I am quite pleased with the unit as it is quite light and small compared to two previous MP3 players I've owned (one HD, one flash based), albeit the need for making it so light necessitated rather flimsy plastic.
Audio quality is good, as is the FM tuner (no noticeable static or disturbances while jogging). The player doesn't include a clip to attach onto clothing, but does include a transparent cover with a velcro strap that can be wrapped around the arm.
I was a bit surprised the player does not support playlists of any sort (it uses ID3 tags to play files alphabetically as listed in the folder). There is a repeat function for the whole folder, but no random or reverse playback modes (I particularly lament the lack of random play as the user may become bored with the set order each time around).
Upon plugging the player into my Windows 2000/XP computer, the player was identified immediately as a removable disk, without need for drivers. Drag and drop and folder creation are very simple and standard. The few button controls (only three on the side of the unit) are used pretty efficiently for playback and mode switching (MP3/FM/record), and includes a hold toggle. Back/forward and volume are controlled with a small joystick, and thus also pretty standard and intuitive. Other reviewers have described these details, so I won't continue further.
The player uses one AAA battery, so I purchased some rechargable NiMH batteries for the unit, and they are working quite well. Potential improvements may include adding a replacable rechargable battery much like most HD based players, and perhaps even an external power-recharging USB plug such that an additional cable is unnecessary except as an extension cord.

TopStrengths: Affordable, Small, No software needed.
Weakness: Feels cheap. Headphones are cheap.
I bought this mp3 player for several reasons. 1) It's affordable 2) It's small yet holds plenty of music 3) You never have to worry about recharging. I travel a LOT, and if this player died after 6 hrs. and needed a recharge like an iPod, i would be dead in the water. But with the Sandisk, i can just pop in a new battery and my music will never die out.
I really like that it's just a plug and play. You don't need software, you can make your own folders and just copy and paste them into the player.
Overall i like it, it's small, easily managable, but it feels so cheap, i just hope it holds up!

TopStrengths: compact size, looks great!
Weakness: radio settings are really hard to use...i have been trying to preset my radio stations and they are taking forever because its hard to figure out!
I think this mp3 player is a great deal! its small, looks great, and the radio is quite clear! The only downside is how to program the radio stations. I havent had a chance to download any mp3s, so Im hoping they wont be as difficult as the radio setup. Also the manual for this thing SUCKS...it isnt very helpful at all....

TopStrengths: Great bang for the buck, lightweight, compact, ease of use and design.
Weakness: The only weakness so far is the cheap earbuds but what do you expect from Sandisk!
I received this product yesterday but it didn't take much time to figure out the funtionality of the Sandisk MP3 player worked. People have written that the buttons aren't very intuitive however, I think it's very simple to use. The only drawbacks so far is the battery door/cover which feels like it's gonna break trying to open it and the mini joystick button feels a little cheap however, it serves it purpose.
The LCD screen is bright, easy to read and large in relation to the size of the MP3 player.
Since it's flashed based, it's extremely easy to connect and transfer files to and from the MP3 player via the USB cable. It would've been nice to have the option to connect directly with a USB connection instead of using the cable. Now I have to lug the cable to and from work or wherever I need to go.
The FM radio works great regardless of what other ratings may have stated. It's easy to save and navigate through the preset stations using the nav button and having 20 presets instead of 6 is a blessing.
The ear buds are the biggest drawback but don't overlook the Sandisk just because of the horrible earbuds. I don't mind spending an extra $20 for a decent pair.

TopStrengths: Compact.
Weakness: Menu. Controls.
The compact size of the unit makes it easy to take to different places. However, the controls are tiny and it has taken me some time to get use to how to change items, control the menu, etc. Radio option is nice but is difficult to get to the right settings. Overall, a good value for the size and features.

TopStrengths: good quality, small, looks cool
Weakness: keys are small
After using this product for a month, I have decided this is a great buy. It was the cheapest MP3/WMA player I could find, and it is great quality. 1GB is plenty of storage space for me, I have over 400 songs on it and it isn't even half way full. I really hope you will consider this product, it's great!

TopStrengths: Sound quality is clear. FM radio is a good feature.
Weakness: Instructions are not very clear. Too small?
Being our first MP3 player, the instructions needed to be a bit more precise about operation and downloading. Unit is VERY small but appears of high quality. Sound is good and so far we are very happy with the player. It is a good toy.

Weakness: Can't Think of any!!
Great MP3 Player for the money. Would HIGHLY recommend this. Compared with other MP3 players and by far has the most value for the money. Even has preset stations unlike the iRiver which is almost twice as much as the Sandisk.

TopStrengths: Small! Display screen, runs on aa battery (no need to charge with a computer (in case you might want to go on a trip with it). Works great while running (armband is nice).
Weakness: headphones are useless, no ability to create playlist, musicman software sucks (I vastly prefer media monkey), poor instructions, non-intuitive contolls, mp3s crakle (I only use wma).
Still better than the ipod shuffle, but may be worth it to spend the extra cash on the muvo. I pais 115 (after two rebates). Overall I like it, but I still need to buy new headphones.........

TopStrengths: Great value for the price. Good sound, lots of features, amazingly small and lightweight. Great battery life.
Weakness: Very poor quality. Only lasted 6 months even though it was very well cared for. Poor warranty from Sandisk.
Bought this player 6 months ago.
Loved it for 6 months - now the LCD panel doesn't work and it is not covered by Sandisk's 1 year warranty. The LCD panel is critical for this player since it has so many features.
Don't expect this player to last long. I used it to walk to and from the train station and always kept it in my pocket and in its really clunky and ugly plastic protective case. I used the protective case because the player has a plastic case and seems quite fragile.
Technical Support at Sandisk stated that the LCD is only covered by warranty if it doesn't work out of the box. After that, you're on your own - so beware.
I would try some other brands with sturdier and proven designs.

The size and sound quality is decent. Purchased this with the intention of playing Audio books and songs through my car radio.
The audio transfer via FM is not great and has lots of disturbance and volume levelling is just OK.
Overall - I think it is OK

TopStrengths: IT's a very small and light stuff. It's easy to take with every where. Sound is good. The price is reasonable.
Weakness: It's pretty difficult to adjust the button for sound up and down and for select a mode. Because the button is too small.
I gonna buy it one more if I can and would like to persuade friends of mind to buy it as well. It's a little portable material that have many advantages. you can use it for improving you language skill and academic achievement. Like me use for American Accent Language practice and tape recoder in class.

TopStrengths: Small, light, good music, radio and usb2.0
Weakness: Too few control buttons. Reading the manual is a must to understand how to use it.
Its a nice, small and light player with good sound quality. The controls though are not straightforward. Each button has a different role in different mode. So I feel a few additional buttons would be better.
Plus points are the radio and memory capacity which i can use as a storage device when needed.

TopStrengths: Small size; large storage capacity; uses single AAA battery
Weakness: Menu system; documentation; headphones
Overall I'm happy with this player. Like some of the other comments, though, the menu system is kind of hard to navigate and the included headphones are junk. Go buy new ones as soon as you get this unit! But otherwise good choice and a value for the money.

TopStrengths: small size, fm tuner, shuffle
Weakness: can't take songs off
It took me a while to figure out how to load the songs onto it, but now that I know, it's so easy. I wish it came with a manual that actually tells you something. It was kinda fun to figure it out on my own though! I'm glad I got this one. I like that it's so much cheaper than the iPod, and the fm tuner is great, too!

TopStrengths: Great little unit with a fine FM tuner. The FM comes in clearly where I live. The battery lasts a long, long time!
Weakness: I wish the FM could record directly to the MP3 player so I could listen later to an FM program.
It is small enough to tuck into your pocket but big enough to maneuver through the menus. My other one is too small and it is easy to fumble while going through the menus. However, this SanDisk is big enough and easy to maneuver through the menus. This unit comes with a plastic carrier so you can strap it to your arm. It also comes with ear buds and an easy to use program to transfer music. I love it.

TopStrengths: Tiny, many features like the equalizer, a balance control, easy navigation with unlimited filing possibilities. FM sensitivity is a nice touch - reception good even in Chicago.
Weakness: Equalizer only works playing mp3s not the radio, but default setting has good bass and clarity. Volume does not get very loud - I guess good for the ears.
Overall a fine product in a *tiny* package and loaded with features. Seems indestructible. LCD is very informative. Once you get the hang of the controls, it's fairly easy and convenient to operate. Setting the FM presets is annoying because it won't let you set the preset number (the instructions say it will) - you have to be on that number then scan all the way from the end to your station. Once set, though, no problem.

SanDisk 1GB MP3 Player
Strengths: Priced lower than other players, Backlit LCD is informative, Small and lightweight, FM radio and voice recorder capabilities, USB 2.0
Weakness: Controls are cumbersome and unintuitive, Requires a USB cable to connect, Directories are limited to 122 files
The Package
The box I received included the following items: MP3 player, ear buds, USB cable, armband, AAA battery, Musicmatch Jukebox software, and a clear protective carrying case.
First Impressions
The MP3 player is a bit thicker than I was expecting. If you put the case on, it’s about twice as thick as the diameter of a AA battery. It dimensions are acceptably small enough to hang around your neck under a shirt, or tucked away in a pocket. The player has as a very cheap feel to it. The shell is made of plastic which keeps it light, but I would rather it be made of metal.
Controls
The SanDisk Digital Audio Player's controls are unintuitive and cumbersome at best. There are 4 buttons along the side and a joystick control on the face. Each of the buttons except for the hold button serves multiple purposes.
In order to start playing MP3’s hold down the Power/Play/Stop button for 2 seconds, wait another 4 seconds, and then press the Power/Play/Stop button again since by default the player always starts up with the player paused (assuming you previously shut down the player in MP3 player mode.
Switching between modes gets worse. In order to go from MP3 to FM mode the player must first be stopped by pressing the Power/Play/Stop button, hitting the Mode Setting/Function/AB button twice and then hitting the Power/Play/Stop button again. By default the FM radio always starts up in mono, so you’ll want to hit the Power/Play/Stop button to switch to stereo.
I’ve only listed a couple of the most basic functions. Configuring your FM resets and navigating through the menu with the joystick control in combination with the Power/Play/Stop button can get very confusing. Also, if you have fat fingers, you aren’t going to like the joystick control.
The software version that came installed with my player is dated 2004/10/26 (SMDX1-0.97C). I would hope that future versions would include defaulting the FM mode in stereo and automatically start playing MP3’s after the power button has been pressed.
A couple of times the player locked up on me and became unresponsive. It has not happened after I replaced the battery.
LCD Screen
The multi-line LCD is informative while not terribly cluttered. In MP3 mode a few of things shown are the current file number, total number of files, ID3 information, battery indicator, and the current folder name. The screen can be configured to be backlit anytime a button is pressed.
FM Radio
The FM radio reception isn’t great. Most of the time I don’t have any problems, but once in a while static will become noticeable.
Voice Recorder
I don’t have much need for this feature, so I have not tested it.
Connecting to a Computer
I find it inconvenient that the mp3 player connects to the computer via a USB cable. I use my MP3 player at home and work, which means I have to carry along the USB cable as well. While I have not used other MP3 players, I know of ones that include USB plugs built into the player itself.
Adding files to the player is simple. One you connect the player via the USB 2.0 cable, the computer auto detects the device and it shows up as a removable drive. Just drag n’ drop any files to the drive and your done. The alternative way of copying music to your player is using the Musicmatch Jukebox software included. I find it more convenient to use file explorer.
There is however a file limitation that is not stated anywhere in the manual, or at least not anywhere that I could find. I was unable to store more than 122 files in a given directory; after that point the computer would complain that the device is full. In order to overcome the problem, you must store additional files in another directory. This is annoying to say the least.
Ear Buds
The ear buds that come with the player aren’t of very high quality. I’ll be purchasing new ones soon.
