3 Star Review Iriver H10 20Gb

Strengths:

N/A

Weaknesses:

N/A

Posted Dec 31, 2006 - I Had Iriver H10 20Gb mp3 player for the last 5 months and it has worked perfectly, the sound is great the colour is good up till now. The screen does not show anything on it and is just a green screen. I am sometimes able to find a song whilst the green screen is on but what is the point if you cant see what you are doing or what song you are listening too. i have tried reseting it several times but still nothing.

4 Star Review Excellent player for the money

Strengths:

Good sound, picture capability, excellent value

Weaknesses:

Can't delete directly from the player

Posted Jun 26, 2006 - I've had it for a few weeks and am very happy with it. I've seen one or two reviews that say you have to use WMP 10 to manage files on it. This is not true, if you install the firmware upgrade to 2.51 or whatever it is. After doing that, I found I was able to just drag folders to it from Windows explorer - music and pictures. I couldn't do playlists that way, nor was I able to figure out how to do them using WMP. This led me to scout around, and I found out that you can work the player with Napster, with Rhapsody, and with the Yahoo Music Engine. I now mainly use it with the Yahoo Music Engine, because you can easily select what you're going to put in your Yahoo music library, and can keep your subscription files separate until you're ready to bring them over. If you get the player, upgrade the firmware right away, and I wouldn't even fool with using it with WMP.

4 Star Review iRiver H10

Strengths:

very good quality of sound, tuner and tuner recording, text and picture viewing, fast, voice recording, cheap

Weaknesses:

cannot manage files directly, only using pc, no video support

Posted May 29, 2006 - I have been using this cute device for app. 2 weeks, and this is what i think about it: It is bigger than iPod but still very small, very practical, its sound is very good and besides that, no iPod has better sound than iRiver H10 because of the SRS WOW effect that iRiver has. When i connected it to my pc for first time, i was little bit dismayed, for Windows doesn't recognize it as a portable hard drive, but as an mp3 player, which has no firm address (e.g. E:). They also say that you can only use Windows Media Player to get music on in. But this is what I have found out: You can get your music on your iRiver H10 without using any WMP. This is how you do it: 1. Turn your iRiver off 2. Reset it (you should know how:) 3. connect it to your pc (still turned off) 4. press and hold "o" button and turn it on (still holding the button until a title "emergency connection" appears) 5. your Windows recognizes the player not as a player, but as a portable hadr disc drive (the same thing asi if you wanted to upgrade your firmware) 6. turn on showing of hidden files in Windows 7. you can open iRiver's folder and see several folders there, e.g. music and so on. Now transfer your music there (including your whole folder and subfolder structure). Then you must set them to be hidden (i mean whole "Music folder, including the subfolders and files"). You can transfer your music and text files on the iRiver this way as well. The iRiver's browser will show them all. 8. Now disconnect the iRiver and refresh its database (in settings, extra). Now you can listen to your music ot using WMP. Since reference is focused on this trick, I will not describe its flaws and strenghts, for you can read about them everywhere (what you cannot say about this) I find this way the best way how to get your music on Iriver, and with this feature, iRiver becomes much more usable than any iPod with its weak iTunes.

3 Star Review H10 20 Gb, It works

Strengths:

Doesn't just do music, does photo's, fm radio etc

Weaknesses:

Bigger than other mp3 players, low resolution screen, slow reaction time to input, I/O interface can be flakey

Posted May 23, 2006 - I've had this mp3 player for just about a year, I got it just when it first came out. It does the job of an mp3 player and seems to work with windows fairly well. I soon found out that the nice color screen was pretty crappy resolution, and at least without firmware updates, you could not zoom in on pictures, making that function not always that useful. After loading all my music on it, I found it extremely useful as a backup hardrive when my computer crashed and I lots all my music on my laptop. When i got my laptop repaired, I simply plugged in the h10 and wala, I was able to copy all my music back onto my laptop. The main complaint I have is that it does not update tags on other music, it only loads new songs onto it. This became annoying when I had a few songs mistagged and they would not move. The other thing was the firmware, with the new firmware update (a couple months ago i think) It seemed to have a lot more trouble syncing. Sometimes it would be fine and sync quickly, others it would take almost a half hour to load a couple new songs or just crash and say it was having I/O problems, then the device would freeze and i'd have to reboot it.

5 Star Review Good Player

Strengths:

Beautiful; high-capacity.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted May 15, 2006 - I got an incredible deal on this player, so that may color my opinion, but this is the iPod killer! The FM tuner just truly seals the deal. Go for it.

4 Star Review didn`t go with the flow this time

Strengths:

good sound quality, easy to use, compability with windows media player (no itunes), good battery life,fm radio, voice recording

Weaknesses:

not many accesorries available, remote sold separetly, smaller display than ipod, thicker than ipod, no prewiev when searching pctures......no video?

Posted May 12, 2006 - i bought this mp3 player because i didn`t want to use apple i tunes and it was much cheaper.my friend has an ipod and he almost returned it because of itunes. this fight between microsoft and apple company is sick. you can buy only ipod accesorries in stores like best buy or circuit city. and once again history repeats and when too giants fight ordinary people will "suffer"(i like ipod tough i had one but it froze and i cannot use it again). this product is perfect if you don`t have to be "in".I haven`t had no problems with it so far and it works well.

4 Star Review Best on the market

Strengths:

Great battery life, excellent sound quality

Weaknesses:

Firmware upgrading, backlight resets

Posted Apr 27, 2006 - I love this MP3 player. It does everything I want it to and more. The sound quality is superb. With the SRS WOW setting enabled, listening to music with headphones is a whole new experience; it really feels like the music is all around me. Combined with my iriver FM Transmitter, I can take my music anywhere I want to go. The firmware upgrade didn't go quite as smoothly as one would hope; I had to do it twice. Other reviews for this player talk about a lag between songs when on Random - my player is 75% full and I haven't noticed any lag whatsoever, so maybe that issue was fixed on the firmware upgrade. Twice, when I turned my player on, the screen's backlight doesn't work. I can just barely see that the screen is on, but I can't make out anything it says without the backlight. The only way to fix this is by resetting the player which, thankfully, is really easy to do as long as you have a pointy pen. (Don't worry, resetting the H10 doesn't erase your music or other files.) The only other beef I have with the H10 is the scroll speed - I wish it would go faster. Despite the speed, at least scrolling's easy - just slide your thumb down the touch strip and hold it down. Like I said, the sound is superb - even with the earbuds that come with the H10 (which, by the way, are Sennheiser which produce awesome quality sound). The menus are easy to navigate as well. Because of extra features like the FM tuner, built in recorder, SRS WOW, and compatibility with Yahoo! Music Unlimited, the iriver H10 is the best MP3 player on the market in my opinion.

3 Star Review Good player if you are willing to do some manipulating...

Strengths:

Small, affordable ($160AR) on Woot, great sound, nice fm tuner, nice color screen.

Weaknesses:

WM Player interface is awful, strange playlist format (can only create playlists through WM Player (see comments for workaround), slow to access playlist directory, cradle required for line-out.

Posted Mar 23, 2006 - I upgraded from a Dell first generation 15GB Digital Jukebox to this player. I looked around at various large capacity MP3 players and chose this one because it got pretty good reviews and was very affordable. My biggest complaint about this player is that you have to use WM player to create playlists. I have since found that sourceforge developed a shareware program, Easy H10, to get around this. I have .M3U format playlists for all of my MP3s and was very disappointed when I realized that this player only accepted .PLS files. Easy H10 will convert your .M3U playlists to the H10 required format, and will populate the artist, playlist, and album folders on your player. The ONLY way to live with this player is to connect it to your computer like an external hard drive (press reset, hold down circle button and power button until emergency connect shows...should then show up as another drive on your computer). This is also the mode you use to upgrade the firmware. In this mode, you NEVER have to use Windows Media Player and you can drag any file directly to your player. Even if you don't use Easy H10 to populate the folders on your drive, you can access any file you added to your player through the player's browser. This also makes it much easier to delete unwanted files from the player, since you can't delete files from it directly (another small complaint). Overall, it’s not a bad player for the money if you don't mind a few extra steps.

4 Star Review iRiver H10 20 GB

Strengths:

looks great, fairly small, great sound

Weaknesses:

terrible delay between switching songs

Posted Mar 7, 2006 - The first thing you should do when you get this player is update the firmware immediately. Most of the issues people have had with this player have been resolved in the newer firmware releases. The player has great sound quality and has good battery life. Definately the best bang for your buck mp3 player on the market. The one issue that I have is that it takes a few seconds to change tracks. Hopefully iriver will put in hard drives with faster access times in the future. All in all I think this is a great player especially for those on a tight budget.

5 Star Review Excellent Player

Strengths:

Easy interface, 20 GB space, voice recorder with built in FM

Weaknesses:

Battery life, better manual

Posted Mar 4, 2006 - I just recently purchased a iRiver 20GB and I have to say after a week of use, this player is one of the best ever, in my humble opinion. I bought this mp3 player after my iPod broke, as they often tend to do. The scroll bar is much more intuitive than the iPod's scroll wheel. The player also uses WMP and Plays for sure. I'm not going to much argue why you should buy this over a Creative Zen Micro or anything because for the most part, Apple owns the business and, if the X-Men have taught us anything, we must attack the Jugernaut's head. A lot of people complain about battery life, but I played it for about 10 hours and still had 2/4 battery left. This player has a BEAUTIFUL color screen. One problem I have, though, is the lack of CD art display on the "Now Playing" screen. Really though this isn't so much a major gripe, it just would be kinda cool. Also my player was defected but I just ordered a replacement on Amazon and my new one is due in just a little while. While I cannot transfer files from the mp3 player to my PC yet I have heard that it is possible. The player is super slick and definately looks cooler than the iPod and its white case. The player comes with a FM radio recorder/player and you can even record voices, like the ones in my head. Although I had to refer to the manual when I was trying to figure out how to do some things, in other words degrade my manhood, The iRiver 20GB is well worth your money. To sum things up: Pros Screen andthe interface 20GB Sleek and Slick Just overall seems super solid and impervious to all drops Compact Price FM Radio Player/ Recorder Cons Battery life Start up and downloading songs, I had to refer to the manual

4 Star Review Very Nice, Attractive Design

Strengths:

Plenty of storage for most, FM tuner, can view photos while listening to music, simple, understandable controls

Weaknesses:

Not many accessories yet, currently can't use for mass storage, uses Windows Media Player 10 for transfers, battery not apparently user replaceable.

Posted Mar 3, 2006 - I like this player very much, it has all I want but for the lack of a user replaceable battery and not being able to use for mass storage - I have sent an email to Tech Support asking about future firmware updates and possible added capabilities, but have not heard back yet. Wondering if I should have waited for the Cowon iAudio X5 for more features at the same price.

4 Star Review IRiver H10 20GB MP3 Player, Great Player

Strengths:

N/A

Weaknesses:

I can't delete files from it directly (must use the computer, but by then I forget which files I wanted to delete). Designed to work with only WMP10.

Posted Mar 2, 2006 - It's nice and light overall... the little up/down selector takes a bit of getting used to... given Apple's circle selector is much more intuitive... The overall palm feel is good on the HD10 - it has a nice balance, better than iPod because I think iPod is pretty slim... Moreover, the hard-drive compartment must be sealed or something because you can't hear the spin and you definitely can't feel it on the device. The screen is quite nice. Given the fact that the iRiver is really just a lcd panel hooked up to a hard drive, I wouldn't be surprised if in future models of the firmware, we get a small MPG4 player or something in it... the chipset seems fast enough... So you can put your pictures and everything else on it. It's not ideal... but it works. It also holds text. This is an interesting idea... I suppose the idea is to put e-books on it or something... I know another software manufacturer has developed a package that will read the text from the files and turn them into audio... As for file support... and here's where things get a bit ugly... all your "itunes" stuff - its 3 sheets to the wind as well... iriver does not support AC3 or Apple's itunes at all.. nor is there an easy way to put it into HD mode and move the files over.... It supports WMF files (windows media) and MP3... plus something called SRS for 360 surround sound (don't have anything like that so I don't know if it works or not). The sound coming off it through my Sony MDR-EX71SL headphones seems flawless enough. The iRiver has an EQ built in and it works pretty well. You can choose standard formats (classicial, rock, etc.) or manipulate it yourselve on 7 bands... The software - its windows media... which is confusing to use initially if you've been conditioned with iTunes. I think Microsoft needs a better tune's management product... but iRiver apparently has no native tunes/device management. This is a problem in many respects... All in all - if you're like me and its once bitten-twice shy with Apple... don't do the Zen, get this product...

4 Star Review Good alternative to my Ipod

Strengths:

Lots of extra features

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Mar 15, 2006 - I bought it because my Ipod does not have FM tuner and I desperately needed it. Before buying I made exrensive research and decided to buy this player. The FM tuner is nice if you don't want to go through your own songs anymore. Additional features that the player has are an FM recoding, voice recording, line-in recording, and the clock on the screen is a brilliant idea. If you're buying it for video and pictures, it may not be the best choice. If you're buying for music and like to have the other features then it's a great player.

5 Star Review IRiver H10 20gb, great player/picture viewer

Strengths:

Excellent battery life, fairly easy to navigate, user interface. Nice screen. Good aftermarket accessories

Weaknesses:

No video, stock headphones leave a little to be desired.

Posted Feb 20, 2006 - Overall I would say this is a very high quality mp3 player. For the price (only 180) it is a great deal, and I could justify paying up to 220-230 for it. It may not be as "cool" as the ipod, but the only thing that color ipods (not video) have that this doesn't is itunes integration, and it's not even that big of a deal. Iriver produces very high quality mp3 players, and the H10 is no exception.
