4 Star Review A true portable entertainment center

Strengths:

7 inch wide screen great for converted dvd's, Long battery life for mp3, Decent life for video(a little over 4 hours). Can connect to a digital camera to tranfer pics.

Weaknesses:

The games on it are terrible. It could have had some PDA functionality or at least wifi capability. Large for PVP/DVR. Would have liked a larger line of accessories.

Posted Apr 24, 2006 - I owned the original av320 and decided to upgrade to this player when i was able to get a great deal on this player. I wouldn't pay $800 for it but if you can find the right deal, this device is well worth the money for someone who travels. Even though at its size someone can argue that a laptop can be carried in its place, I use it to compliment my laptop. Most of my DVD collection has been transfered over to the av700 and the quality is still great although to do this you must use third party software. Despite other peoples ease of use with WMP 10, I for some reason can not transfer video through device sync but its of little importance as I have found other ways using software to make video compatible that works on almost anything I throw at it. All in all this PVP does what it claims and does it well. For those who complain about screen resolution, when you run a dvd on the av700 in the highest quality it can handle and it looks great. Only complaints are that I wish it had some more accessories, a built in Mic like my old av320, and a little better video conversion capabilities. If you cant deal with video conversion don't get this. If you can, than it will live up to your expectations.

4 Star Review AV 700 100GB Media Player

Strengths:

100GB memory, portable

Weaknesses:

Expensive, not very easy to use initially

Posted Jun 11, 2006 - I have this player for about 10 days. Initially, I want to return it. With time, I start liking it. I have average computer knowledge. The product box does not have the manual. I could not figure out at first. Later on, I find out the manual on line through the Archos website. With the manual, it is getting better. I am into more DVD video than music. It is easier to copy through the port. However, I am still try to figure out how to convert to MGP4 on the computer. I have not try to put the music on yet. In conclusion, I think this product is good for people who have good computer knowledge. If you are not computer oriented, this product will frustrate you initially. However, take time and go through the manual.

5 Star Review Awesome product does it all

Strengths:

large, clear screen; good battery life; comes with all necessary connections; support most common formats; no weird protections/limitations

Weaknesses:

Time consuming to convert and transfer movies (but this is inevitable with this type of product, I think)

Posted Feb 1, 2006 - I really like the Archos AV700, it's way better than having a portable DVD player which is all the rage these days. The screen is nice and big, and the unit looks good. It comes with all the necessary connections right in the box, including all cables and a nice TV hub for hooking up to a TV. This lets you view everything right on the TV and comes with a remote control. It also lets you record right off the TV! Transferring files is very easy using Windows Media Player and fast with USB2.0. Capacity is a huge 100GB which suffices for many movies. The player supports DIVX/XVID codecs which are most common and really good quality. The downside is you have to rip and convert DVDs yourself, which is definitely time consuming and can be hit or miss depending on the movie you are working with. But that's really not the fault of the Archos which does it's job very well. A great product for people who want the latest gadget.

4 Star Review decent player which needs improvement

Strengths:

it has a large screen with portability, can record in real-time from dvd, vcr. can be used to listen to music, it can be used as a photoviewer as well. 100GB is a plus

Weaknesses:

battery not long enough, sometime the player stops working (I had to restart the player) for a few video clips.

Posted Dec 18, 2005 - This is one of the first portable video players in the current market. It has a large 7'' screen with good portability, can be used as a mp3 player and photo viewer as well. It has 100GB storage so sufficient for you to watch movies during your trip. The drawback is that it has limited battery life, sometimes the screen halts during the video (not sure if the problem is the video itself or the player). It needs more improvement but fairly decent.

5 Star Review Best Media Player Available

Strengths:

Screen Size, Quick Responses, HD Space & the option to increase video quality.

Weaknesses:

Figuring out the video conversion...once down though, sky is the limit.

Posted May 10, 2006 - Considering the available media players on the market, this is the best offer. No one can touch the Archos systems. From screen size to HD size, you can't loose. Sleek and beautiful, an impressive piece of technology everyone will envy. Prices have dropped and system upgrades are available.

5 Star Review Fantastic product for those who travel and those who have kids

Strengths:

-Compact and effective -Great picture quality -Easy to use -Best product of its class in the market -Very well integrated with Microsoft Media Player and syncronization -Its a multimedia station

Weaknesses:

-Expensive but you get what you pay for -Time consuming to convert files but once you have a routine it becomes easy -Recording is time and date based. No TV Guide -Dont buy it for the games option

Posted May 26, 2006 - This is a great device. I travel all the time and although I carry a laptop the convenience of having this in your jacket pocket at all times is unbeatable. It has great battery life and the sound is very good. Picture quality excellent. Its considerably larger than an IPOD but not that much heavier and the screen is large enough that you don't have to squint. The drive is big enough to carry more films and music than i can watch in several months. It is the perfect device for a family since you can carry all the kids fave shows on the road. The ability to easily hook it into a TV and use the big screen is a very nice feature. I don't use the recording feature since i record videos on my household DVR and then move them to the Archos. The Archos DVR is time and date based and does not have a built in TV guide which is unfortunate. Personally i have no need for it. The killer application for sync'ing video to this is the free PocketDivX encoder which has built in setting for all Archos devices amongst others. The games on offer are pretty bad and of early nineties quality. This unit is by no means a cheap device but you get what you pay for.

4 Star Review Time flies while traveling

Strengths:

Large screen and the ability to record from cable

Weaknesses:

Must use both thumbs to navigate the screens and it sometimes turns the cable box off before the recording.

Posted May 23, 2006 - It's cool to have your TV programs with you. Now, I am not locked to my house. I can watch on the train or easily show anyone. The only problem I had was when recording several programs from cable, the AV700 would send the signal to turn the box on/off before each recording. I would get every other program.

4 Star Review Wow....Unbelievable product.

Strengths:

7 inch screen, 250 movies. Easily hook up to your tv.

Weaknesses:

bought product before research on AV700 TV, short battery life.

Posted Mar 17, 2006 - This product comes with all the necessary connections right from the box, including all cables and a nice TV hub for hooking up to a TV. This lets you view everything right on the TV at almost DVD quality and comes with a remote control. It also lets you record right off the TV OR Tivo. I especially love it because I get to download all my Sci FI shows. Transferring files is very easy once you get use to it with Windows Media Player 10. Capacity is a huge 100GB which sufficient space for many movies. But take note you need third party software to rip your movies right before you put them on the device. A great product for tech junkies.

4 Star Review AV 700 Video Player recorder

Strengths:

Large Screen size, Amazing disk size

Weaknesses:

Poor synchronization software included, clumsy controls, screen quality, poor video playback life.

Posted Feb 26, 2007 - This is my third mp3/mp4 player that I have owned - and its by far the best. But even with how happy I am with the AV700 - I can also clearly see things I wish were were better about it. The screen size really is what separates this player from the other mp4 players on the market. It is thoroughly enjoyable and watching is something comfortable for more than one person at a time. Archos actually sells a mounting kit so that the device attached to the headrest of one of the front seats in the car so that your kids can watch movies while you drive. Although the screen is wonderful - at the same time the quality of the screen is not as sharp as some of the other high end mp4 player screens - but this is nitpicking a bit. The player has great sound quality with the included headphones. The external speakers are also nice and loud compared to the other mp4 players I have used. One thing that is annoying is that while you can easily adjust the volume using the built in head phones - adjusting the volume on the built in speakers while watching a movie is not possible - you need to go to a hard to get to configuration screen to adjust the external speaker volume. I am not much of a music enthusiast, but playing mp3 files seemed to work nicely. One of the reasons I bought the av700 is because I planned on recording video content from my TV/VCR/DVD onto the av700. And while it doesn't seem all that complicated from the instructions - I still have not attempted to do that yet - making me wonder if this is such a great feature after all. The big thing is getting movies onto the player. I use media player 10 to sychronize movies onto the player. Most mp4 players require you to use media player to sync with your device and put files onto it. My last mp4 player required me to convert almost every file before it was synchronized. Given that convertion of files takes a long time - it can be a real pain. The AV700 seems to be able to sync lots of different kinds of files without convertion. The problem is sometimes the sync process in media player sometimes puts files onto the AV700 without syncing them - when in fact the AV700 cant play those files without conversion. I found this to be a bit annoying - although the one redeaming aspect of this is that the problem seems to happen more with older AVI files and rarely with newer ones. The conversion tool that comes with the AV700 is not so great. When I have a video that needs conversion - I wind up using a third party AVI conversion softer to convert those videos to something the AV700 can use. One other thing to note - the brochures for the AV700 says it plays games - but mine came with a few games that were really crummy. Don't buy this thing for the games... Battery life for the device is just over 4 hours for video player - which is not bad - but its shorter than most other devices. Overall, I am very happy with the AV700. I have a great device that more than one person can comfortably watch and enough disk space to keep tons of stuff on it.

Thank you for the valuable feedback!
