.....Not as good as the Linkstation Live!!!
Raid 1, large storage capacity, good media server, small in size...
The installed hard drives leave a lot to be desired.
Posted 1 year ago - My first NAS ever was a 500GB Buffalo Lnkstation Live, and I love it. Unfortunately I am about to fill it up, so I decided to upgrade to the Pro Duo, both because of its large capacity and it Raid 1 capability. From the very instant I started using it I noticed how noisy the hard drives were! I could hear it from across the room churning away (Churrn----churrn---CHURRRRRRN!). This was in sharp contrast with the Linkstation Live, which is virtually noiseless. When I opened it up I found that the hard drives inside were the Hitachi "Deskstar" HDT721010SLA360. After doing some googlieing I found that these particular drives have issues not only with high noise levels, but they also have a high premature failure rate!! They are even dubbed "deathstars" in some circles! But even if these HDDs were reliable, I simply couldn't live with that level of noise, so I returned the product right back to the store. I really wish Buffalo made NAS enclosures, like the D-LINK DNS-323, which I also tried but found that the UPnP Media Server isn't nearly as good as Buffalo's. I have read reviews of people who have Linkstations Pro Duos with Seagate and Western Digital drives inside, and are happy with them. Mine was 3rd generation, and it seems that Buffalo has opted for cheaper hard drives in order to cut cost.
