Announced on January 5th 2009 - to be displayed at both Macworld and CES 2009 - the Home Media Network Hard Drive is an affordable networked attached storage option from Iomega. Available in 500GB of 1TB sizes, the Home Media Network Hard Drive will feature a single hard disk, AFP/SMB support, a gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 connection, and the ability to run UPnP and iTunes servers. The units will cost $160 and $230 respectively. Features 500GB or 1TB capacities Gigabit or USB 2.0 connection AFP/SMB support ability to run UPnP/iTunes server Models 500GB version, $159.99 1TB version, $229.99 ... PROS: (1) NAS - share files on a network without a PC host required to be online (2) attractive brushed alluminum enclosure (3) includes proprietary LifeLine software that allows users to automatically backup files or stream music/photos/videos between multiple network hosts (including computers, TVs, gaming consoles etc...) (4) affordable compared to other NAS options (5) priced similar to regular USB/Firewire only drives ... CONS: (1) single drive only - no way to ensure data without the use of another computer/drive (2) limited capacity compared to seagate 1.5TB option / dual drives (3) poor naming conventions!
