Posted May 17, 2007 - Don't expect Ghost 12.0 to replace Ghost 9.0 in your arsenal of tools. I purchased it hoping to find a version that would allow reading both SATA and IDE drives during the same session. While it may do that, it has no provision for creating images from a boot CD or floppy, nor does it support the earlier .gho file format. A total waste of money.

4 Star Review Norton Ghost 12

Strengths:

Much improved user interface over Ghost 10 and works on Microsoft Vista and automatic disk image backups and now data file backups too.

Weaknesses:

Uncertain if it caused a problem with Microsoft Outlook.

Posted Jun 1, 2007 - I have been waiting for this release so I once again would have the comfort of automatic image backups since I installed Vista. I wisely made an image backup using other software (Acronis) before installing because the first time I installed it installed fine, I made the first backups, then started using my software only to find Microsoft Outlook I use for my email would not work or open my email files. I even reinstalled Office but still would not work. I then restored my system with the old image back up software and then installed Ghost 12 again and made a backup. This time Outlook worked fine and so far so good. I am hopefull all is well but I have been using it only one day. I really like the new interface with 12 and hope it is as reliable as the Ghost 10 product I used with Windows XP. I am a very experienced user which is why I did not take a chance trusting windows restore as the only way to get my system back if something went wrong. Windows Restore has failed me in the past which is why I don't rely on it when installing new software anymore. A new feature, scheduling data backups daily is very appealing and will help those who do not use other products like NTI Shadow 3 that I use for that purpose. I can't give it a 5 star at this point due to the first install bad experience I can only attribute to this new product though.

5 Star Review Norton Ghost 12

Strengths:

Very easy to use. Almost idiot proof. Does everything.

Weaknesses:

Some portions of the manual and instructions were a little vague and difficult to understand. But I am not pc literate.

Posted Jul 19, 2007 - My hard drive was making noises and ready to fail. Place of purchase said I would have to reload all operating systems and software when new drive was installed. Friend said he used Ghost many time and it would transfer everything. I bought the software, installed it, and it took care of everything. My new drive contained exactly everything that was on my old drive. Once you give the go-ahead to this software, it does everything. After 5 days now, no problems encountered. Saved me a lot of time and grief.

Strengths:

Works with USB drives. Restore boots from CD. Don't have to boot into DOS to create an image.

Posted Jul 18, 2007 - I had refused to purchase Ghost after v9 when they made it hard to create an imaging CD. Now that I'm using Windows Vista I find that v9 has limited functionality and I can't really fit images on to DVD anymore. Norton Ghost 12 to the rescue. Sort of. It's big, ugly, takes forever to boot into recovery, but at least it works. Creating the image can be done directly within Windows and it takes a very short time when using an external USB drive (in fact, don't bother to use the image-to-DVD option, they don't recommend it and I couldn't make it work despite 3 tries on a computer that used to image fine w/v9 to DVD). In short, it's a necessary tool if you do this stuff but look for sales and rebates to get the price down to something reasonable.

1 Star Review Norton Ghost 12.0 is a waste of money for older OS

Strengths:

File and Folder backup feature

Posted Sep 25, 2007 - I'm greatly disappointed by Symantec. One significant feature previous versions of Norton Ghost lacked was the ability to backup files and folder. This feature was introduced in Norton Ghost 12.0. This made me to give a thumbs up for Symantec until I got Norton Ghost 12.0 only to find that it cannot be installed on my windows 2000 professional workstations! Online Chat with a Symantec analyst confirmed this and proferred a solution to change the operating system! When you are running processes on workstations that have to stay on 24hours a day, replacing the OS is like building a new space station! Symantec should have done much better than to introduce a new improved version of Norton Ghost that is totally useless to many old users! Think carefully before you buy the product. It is sad to note that the cost of returning the Norton Ghost 12.0 product is far more than the cost of a new product!!!

5 Star Review Aint skeered of no ghost

Strengths:

Greater control of backup files, Ability to perform backup with or without the backup wizard, Windows Vista compatible.

Weaknesses:

New interface is not necessarily better, however, does not take long for one to adapt.

Posted Jul 6, 2007 - Overall, Symantec continues with minor improvements. It allows one to backup and restore simply and with confidence. It has a redesign interface, ability to backup over a network (provided other networked computers have Ghost 12 installed on them), works with backups created with prior Ghost versions, and most important Windows Vista compatible. Good Product.

Posted Mar 6, 2008 - I went from Ghost 10 to Ghost 12 without a problem. I like Ghost 12 better. It is faster and has less windows to go through to get to the backup. Good upgrade..

Posted Feb 27, 2008 - I have been using Norton Ghost for years from DOS version. It has solid backup ability and Norton Ghost 12.0 has the ability to backup certain files or folders as a big improvement. I backup the system drive and it will make a restore point whenever there is a system configuration change. It make need some work on the image size in the later version.

4 Star Review Comprehensive Backup Solution

Strengths:

Ability to image an entire hard drive

Weaknesses:

Nothing glaring as yet

Posted Dec 30, 2007 - So far, I have had no problems with this version (12) of Norton Ghost. It allows me to image my system drive as well as backup other drives and important files. I have successfully built and tested a recovery CD. However, I have not as yet actually tried to recover or restore anything. The real proof will be when and if I actually have to use the recovery files. I don't have the issue of compatibility with earlier versions raised by other reviewers. So my rating is strictly on its ability to provide a backup solution.

3 Star Review Good backup program

Strengths:

No more DOS mode

Weaknesses:

Requires Microsoft Net 2.0 be installed

Posted Nov 18, 2007 - I've been using Norton Ghost to backup my computers but I hadn't upgraded in awhile so I bought Ghost 12. I found the program has changed greatly from the older versions. It is now fully a Windows program instead of a DOS program. The format the backups that it stores data in has changed too. One of the changes I liked least is the requirement to install Microsoft NET 2.0 in order for Ghost 12 to work. The addition of the capacity to just backup files and folders, not just the whole disk is nice. Other than the requirement for Microsoft .NET I found Ghost 12 and its new features to be a big step forward.

Posted Nov 10, 2007 - Good easy to use interface. Improved GUI. Vista compatible. Does not support older OSes. It is a very secure and easy way to backup a complete disk image including the OS, applications and data. CD provides boot in case of catastrophic OS failure.

Posted Oct 31, 2007 - I have used Ghost for several years now from the original versions all the way to version 12. They continue to improve it and it does all that I need. It is also better than what Microsoft provides in VISTA so I am continueing to use it.

Strengths:

Few - backup may work but don't trust it.

Weaknesses:

Fails to create a recovery point correctly, web site support still refers to Ghost 10.0, Autofix download doesn't install

Posted Oct 29, 2007 - I upgraded from Ghost 9 to Ghost 12, specifically for the ability to create recovery points as I am intending to upgrade from XP to Vista. Sad to say this much hyped feature doesn't work properly. A recovery point will only be created if the source disk is completely clean (no bad sectors, CRC failures etc) - otherwise Ghost simply fails. A link to the website takes you to a tool called Autofix that doesn't intstall properly (I gave up after 10 minutes of waiting for the install to run after it downloaded). A link to the Symantec website for Ghost 12 support takes you to the Ghost 10.0 pages. Booting from the ISO image and running the Analyze functions reports, after 4 hours of running on a 60Gb disk, that there were no errors, but the Recovery Point still failed. So, a total waste of money. Is this the best a company like Symantec can do ? Go elsewhere for backup software.

Strengths:

Improved GUI; works as advertised

Had to create new backup settings; need in addition to Norton 360

Posted Sep 4, 2007 - I have always had the version of Norton Ghost bundled with Norton SystemWorks Premier. However, I ended up getting Norton 360 this time around, thinking that it had "everything"...that is how they market it, afterall! Well, while it does include backup software, it does not include drive imaging. As a result, I had to buy Ghost 12. I did lose my previous backup setttings, as they didn't appear to be compatible. The install process removed the old ghost automatically, so the configuration files were lost in that process. Once I got it up and running, I was easily able to re-rereate my backup settings, and I was off and running. I like the new GUI. Not sure what was wrong with the old, but oh well. It works fine with my windows xp install, but I have yet to try it with Vista, even though it claims compatibility.

Strengths:

Ghost is very easy to setup, and it walks you through doing a backup with advanced compression techniques.

Weaknesses:

it can't create a HDD image under DOS OS system

Posted Sep 1, 2007 - Using Norton Ghost 12 on my Windows Vista machine with an 500GB Seagate Hard Drive. Ghost is very easy to setup, and it walks you through doing a backup. It is the best solution I found for day to day backup of my home and business computers. You can setup automated backups so that every week, day, Monday, etc... the system will automatically do a backup without user intervention. I have tested the restore methods, and not only are they reliable, but they are fast too. In case you try to restore a file that already exists, you will be prompted by Windows to confirm the restore, which should help prevent overwriting a good file by accident.
