PCmover Clones your computer. DNA not included.Imagine a quick and easy way to move all of your applications, settings, and data files from one PC to your other PC while keeping all the software intact. That?s PCmover.PCmover lets you move all of your applications, data files, and even registry settings to another PC, and even from old operating systems to newer ones!Simply install PCmover on both computers and go! PCmover will determine what files and settings need to be moved. You don?t even have to tell PCmover which applications to move or know the location of your programs or files. With the PCmover Wizard, your transfer is accomplished with just a few clicks. When the transfer is complete, you are ready to use your new computer with all of its pre-installed software as well as your familiar applications, data files, and settings.PCmover does not overwrite the new system like a cloning or imaging utility does and it does not change the old PC in any way. PCmover only transfers and merges entries from one PC to the other PC.Includes a Laplink USB 1.1 cable - transfer speeds of up to 5 Mbps minimize

5 Star Review PCMover is a good product !

Strengths:

Ease of use. Effective tool for the moving of data from one PC to another.

Weaknesses:

None that I am aware of, except that you will need to think before you start...

Posted Dec 3, 2007 - I have seen so many negative reviews about this product that I have decided to write my own, which I usually do not do. I have used this product two times over the past few years, i.e. whenever I got a new company notebook PC or a new desktop PC. Previously, I had to back up all my data on the company server, chase the support guys for original software CDs and soft keys, etc. etc., only to note afterwards that programs that were installed by some of our software developers were not as easy available as I thought, and so on and so forth. Therefore, when I last got a new desktop PC, I decided to look for a tools that will make the transfer as easy as possible. Before I started this process, I removed all the junk that is usually accumulated on a hard drive over time, in order to minimize the amount of data to be transferred. This took me some time, but it was worth the effort (and you should do that anyhow every now and then: This is what I meant 'You have to think before your start'!). After having connected both PCs via the company network I installed the software and decided which one to be the 'new' and which one to be the 'old' computer. That was nearly everything that I needed to do, and the rest went more or less automatic, with the exception of a few questions I was asked prior to the actual transfer. The actual transfer took about an hour, and to my amazement even some Oracle applications that we are using internally and that are kind of 'rough' programed were working fine. As I at the same time did an upgrade of the OS from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, some registries need to be checked/updated/corrected, but that was it ! Instead of days I was only occupied by this transfer for about 2 hours. What a saving compred to previously experienced ! So, when I got a new company notebook a few weeks ago I did the same, except that I now included one of the support staff into this project. He did make the same experience, and our support manager is evaluating this product now, in order to see whether or not he will use it for all of the data transfers from 'old' to 'new' PCs. I am to 100% satisfied with this product, and will use it again, whenever required.

1 Star Review Complete Garbage!! Do not waste your time with PCmover!!!!!

Strengths:

None that I can see -- maybe it can move data?

Weaknesses:

Can't move applications like they claim.

Posted May 5, 2008 - I wanted a quick and easy way to move all my data and applications to my new laptop. PCMover installed and seemed to work. However once the transfer was complete, the applications on the new computer started crashing intermittently. PCMover made a mess out of a new laptop so now I have to load the operating system from scratch and reload all the applications and data the old fashioned way. I have never written a review for a product but I wanted to warn as many people as possible. This software is not ready for prime time!!!!

1 Star Review PCMover

Strengths:

So far I do not see any strengths. I could not even get PcMover installed on my old computer. In fact, Laplink could not get it installed on my computer.

Weaknesses:

It is really too bad when the support at Laplink can not get the program installed.

Posted Jul 3, 2007 - I bought this program from Dell when I purchased a new computer. It installed on the new computer; however, we could never get PcMover installed on the old computer. After around 8 hours I gave up. Don't buy this product unless there are programs on the old computer that you absolutely cannot reload. Good Luck - I hope yours works.

4 Star Review Good Quality software

Strengths:

Does what it says

Weaknesses:

My copy only had a USB 1.1 cable included

Posted 1 year ago - After the initial setup, the step by step directions walk you right through the PCmover process. The directions were easy to follow, and the old Windows 2000 machine worked to transfer all of its data to the new Windows XP SP3 machine. everything transferred to perfection, except for the McAfee virus software, which I then reinstalled on the new machine. The only complaint that I have is that the package I got had a USB transfer cable that was USB 1.1 compliant, so the transfer took longer than I thought that it should have.

4 Star Review PCmover

Strengths:

Good program does what it says.Very easy to use.

Weaknesses:

Can only use one time.

Posted Apr 24, 2008 - Product works great and is very easy to use. It also takes about 4 hours to move 15 gig using the usb cable. The only drawback is that you can only use it one time before having to buy another registration.

4 Star Review Before you buy, know this

Strengths:

Moves specified files/folders/applications

Weaknesses:

Comes with a single license and can only be used between the 1st two PC's they're installed on.

Posted Jan 3, 2008 - The instructions were straight forward. Install the software on both PC's (old & new,) connect the included Laplink USB cable, run the program on both machines, select the files/folder/applications that you want to move; hour and a half later, everything was transfered. This was done between two Dells (old leased one and a new purchased one) both running XP Pro 32bit. At the date of posting this, I have not found another utility that allows you to select what files/folders/apps to move. All the other ones can only move EVERYTHING which is ridiculous if you're going from something old with older versions to something new with the most recent versions already installed. For example: your old computer has Office 2003 and your new computer has Office 2007. Hands down, this one beats the competition. My only gripe is that buying this utility is only good between the initial 1st two PCs/Laptops that you transfer between. You have to buy additional licenses or another retail box. When I spoke with tech support at laplink, they suggested buying Laplink PCmover Network Edition to save some money. Note-if you don't have a network established, you will need a laplink usb cable.

1 Star Review PCMover Version 2.00.1.583 from Laplink.

Strengths:

Absolutely none. Avoid. I would rate this product with less than zero stars. You would have to pay me to use this software again. Caveat Emptor!

Weaknesses:

Does not work. The value of my time spent messing with this non-functional "software", far exceeds the money wasted on purchasing this "software". Avoid! Their support,IMHO, was risky!

Posted Aug 23, 2007 - DON'T waste your money and time on this product. I am a computer professional with 30 years experience including operating systems internals and Windows programming and have moved/cloned other systems manually or using aloha-bob, without incident. Unfortunately, aloha-bob is no longer available. I needed to move my "at work" workstation to a new system so I thought I would give this software a try. What a mistake... I found that the support that I received from Laplink was horrible and could break the system you are trying to clone (as per Microsoft knowledge base). I expressed my dissatisfaction with the software to Laplink customer service, requested a refund, and they eventually responded by sending me SPAM. I ended up moving my system manually, which took less time than I spent messing with this product and the poor Laplink support! Avoid!

2 Star Review PC mover

Strengths:

Quick install, comes with an USB cable at no cost.

Weaknesses:

Poor documentation. Hard to get the USB cable to be seen properly. Not all applications moved over work and will need to be re-loaded.

Posted Jul 13, 2005 - The quick start guide does not give you any info on the use and installation of the USB cable. I finally got the new computer to see the cable but never the old one. I finally used an old Laplink parrallel cable I had. The process errored out during the first run and completed when re-started. Over-all this took about 12 hours. Data came over well, and after going through an install process a few applications came up. I have several work related apps that will need to be reloaded. For the amount of time I will spend setting this up and waiting for the transfer, I could have just saved my data to a CD and re-installed all my apps. The rebate advertised did not mention having to own other Laplink products but seems to be a requirement on the form.

1 Star Review THIS JUNK COST ME MY JOB!

Strengths:

nothing.. seriously

Weaknesses:

everything.. seriously

Posted Oct 20, 2007 - A client needed to transfer data from their "old" computer to a "new" computer. Both computers were MSWinXPsp2. The "new" was brand new (Dell Vostro 200) and had nothing on it, plus I removed all junk put on by vendor prior to transfer. (The "old" was a Sony VAIO laptop.) I proceed to install PCmover on both computers. I then start the software running on both computers. First problem appears. I hooked up the included USB cable (as compared to using the network to transfer, because USB2 is faster than networking, right?). Well, it turns out it the cable WASN'T a USB2 cable but rather a USB1.1 cable. WHO THESE DAYS packages USB1.1 cables? That mistake cost me TONS of time (more below, continue reading).. The "new" computer starts first, telling me to hook up the cable at both ends and start the "old" computer. That was fast! THEN I start the "old" computer. Well, it must've taken me 15 minutes to get thru all of the questions, options, etc. And the worst of it was that it appeared to start running, I went away 10 minutes for coffee, only to return to find it asking MORE questions prior to starting! Once running it was VERY slow. 4+ hours estimated for 4GB of data. At the 1.5 hour point I go online to look for help, find out about the USB1.1 (not USB2) cable, stop the process which must've added to my problems (more below, continue reading). I restart, enter 15 minutes of options YET AGAIN, and run it over the network. AH HA, MUCH faster. Not long later the process hangs. Again looking for help online, I find it hangs for MANY reasons (just look for yourself, you'll see). I think this restart again contributed to my problems (more below, continue reading). OK. It's finally done. My client is hovering above me. I reboot the computer, it starts coming up. Error messages everywhere. Finally it arrives in Windows. I attempt to start Outlook, Word, and other client-required applications. The computer hangs. No way out. I can repeat the behaviour, after many reboots. The computer is completely corrupted. The client is FURIOUS with me. I've kept him off his computer all day long. Now, I HAD created an operating system restore point PRIOR to doing this process. So I restore the system prior to the process. Turns out the system restore point logs were CORRUPTED by PCmover, too! Next step would have to be to return the Dell to its factory default settings. That’s not a big deal to do, as prior to running the process I had only applied Windows Updates. But now I won't be doing this. I WAS IMMEDIATELY FIRED BY THE CLIENT. THEN LATER MY PLACEMENT AGENCY FIRED ME! GEE, THANX PCMOVER! - You destroyed my client’s computer! HOPEFULLY the factory default settings restore will work! - You cost my client an entire day of work! - I will NOT charge my client for my “work” that day; oops, I mean WASTE OF TIME. - YOU COST ME MY JOB! - I personally paid for your software so of course I will not be reimbursed by the client. OH, and folks, the software is for ONE AND ONLY ONE USE! (Not that I'd ever use it again.) It's keyed via the parent company servers. SO IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A MISERABLE DAY AND REMAINDER OF LIFE, PURCHASE AND USE PCMOVER!!!

1 Star Review PCMover - A Virus

Strengths:

Marketing

Weaknesses:

Performance

Posted 1 year ago - PCMover is more like a virus than what it claims to be. It has infected two of our computers and both are now completely disabled. Only a Masochist should buy it. Only a Sadist should sell it.

1 Star Review PC Mover

Strengths:

Easy to install

Weaknesses:

DOES NOT move programs. None of the migration programs worked as the files were corrupted once migration was complete.

Posted 1 year ago - I never write up comments, but I'm super pissed off that I spent $69.99 on a product that doesn't do what it says it's supposed to do. Plenty of disclaimers through set up that alert you to this fact, and twice I shut down the installation of the software. I should have listened to my "gut" instinct, and taken this piece of crap software back to the store! Don't waste your money!

1 Star Review One Star is Too High

Strengths:

I did move one program.

Weaknesses:

The company says PC Mover is designed to be used one time.

Posted 1 year ago - When I tried to move another program from my old computer, PC Mover checked for and installed updates. Then asked for my serial number. I have never had a program ask for the serial number following an update! I couldn't find it so I called the company. After a run-around, they gave it to me. It would not work. I wasted two hours. This is expensive software for one use.
