2 Star Review Great Idea, BAD product

Strengths:

shreds unopened mail, credit cards & cds. compact size fits on a desk easily

Weaknesses:

does not last long!

Posted Oct 25, 2007 - 6 month old machine just up and died while attempting to shred the equivalent of two sheets of paper. I love the idea of a nice compact machine I can set on my desk, but I DON'T like the idea of replacing it every six months. This machine was used on a daily basis for approximately 5-6 pieces of mail.

1 Star Review MailMate is "Junk"

Strengths:

Heavy duty shredder. Shreds all items as listed. Good size

Weaknesses:

Broke down within 5 mins of use within 1 year with minimal usage

Posted Dec 3, 2007 - I bought this almost a year ago, and recently it stopped working while I was using it. For the amount of time i've had it, i've only used it a few times. I was extremely disapointed how it broke down so fast as I thought the machine itself was made with quality and in my eyes, it was considered a heavy duty shredder. Boy was i ever wrong. I strongly don't recommend this to anyone.

2 Star Review It doesn't know when to stop!

Strengths:

It shreds paper.

Weaknesses:

Won't stop running.

Posted 1 year ago - It seems that I'm doing better than most folks with this thing. Mine works when I turn it on. ALL THE TIME, WHENEVER it's turned on! It's supposed to stop running when the paper has gone through, but it seems to think that there is always paper in the slot. So I have to turn it off to stop the shredding process. The Staples web site ( product-support-staple... ) is useless.

1 Star Review Very functional, bad quality

Strengths:

it's a good, solid machine that shreds well, but...

Weaknesses:

it only lasted a month of light use before failing to come on and becoming inoperable. Looks like they are closing these out for a reason.

Posted 1 year ago - I'm returning mine. I'll shop around for something similar but better. I'm afraid that buying another would result in the same problem. Staples must have had so many returns they are stopping selling them.

1 Star Review AVOID THIS DUD, UNLESS YOU JUST NEED A TEMPORARY SHREDDER.

Strengths:

Shreds whole junk mail packs in one pass.

Weaknesses:

Stops working promptly.

Posted Jan 27, 2008 - I agree, good idea, but a hunk of junk. THIS LASTED FOUR WHOLE MONTHS, BEFORE IT JUST STOPPED one day. Looking at the other reviews I guess I was lucky. AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

2 Star Review shredder that doesn't always

Strengths:

shreds well when it works.

Weaknesses:

Thinks it's jammed at random times.

Posted Oct 29, 2007 - All in all so far, it's a good enough shredder, especially since we got it on the "free" sale, but it constantly thinks that it's jammed, even though there's nothing in it. I have to shake it around to finally get it to work right again. Then it's fine.

1 Star Review WORKED FOR 2 1/2 MONTHS THEN QUIT WORKING

Strengths:

Did shred paper and even a checkbook spine. Never tired a CD.

Weaknesses:

Stopped working after less than 3 months and with very little use.

Posted Mar 27, 2007 - Purchased 2 MailMates as 2006 Christmas gifts. The one we have was only used occasional and worked fine for 2 1/2 months. Then one day went to turn it on and the power would not come on. Machine was DOA. 1st returned the unit to the store where it was purchased as per the instructions in the warranty and they would not take it. Called customer support (India) and instructed to ship it at my cost via UPS or Fed Ex only, to Brooklyn, N.Y. My cost to ship via UPS would be approx. $30 plus packaging. So we now have an expensive paperweight. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE OR ANY STAPLES BRAND SHREDDERS.

5 Star Review Great Product

Strengths:

-actually shreds unopened junk mail -all shredding is thorough (not partial, like some other shredders) -shreds credit cards completely -diamond shred adds to the security

Weaknesses:

-unit is small, this means it fits in small areas but the bin is smaller as well so it must be emptied more often (though it is very easy to empty with the pull out bin)

Posted Nov 22, 2006 - I've only had this shredder for a week, but so far I love it. It is far better than my prior home shredder or our shredder at the office. It shreds thoroughly - even thick junk mail with faux credit cards inside. It shows no signs (or smells) of overheating, even after heavy use. It is really easy to empty (unlike other shredders, I don't have to awkwardly lift off the top to empty the bin). So far, I am a very satisfied customer.

1 Star Review Waste of money

Strengths:

Shreds unopened junk mail

Weaknesses:

Can be easily filled so full that it is impossible to empty without breaking the bin.

Posted Mar 2, 2008 - After it got full, it was impossible to empty. The handle broke off in my hands. The cheap plastic just bends rather than opening the bin. I seriously don't know how to empty it without completely breaking the bin door off. This happened on Day One.

1 Star Review Worked for one week only and does not shred anything else other than paper item

Strengths:

Shreds mail completely and any paper item.

Weaknesses:

Does not shred credit card too well and does not shred CD too well either. If you need something that will shread more than mail and paper items, please do not get this item.

Posted Dec 4, 2006 - Although it's good for junk mail, it is not an all-inclusive shredder. As mentioned in the weaknesses, after about one or two credit cards or one or two CDs, the shredder starts to over heat. After about one hour, if you use it again, it will have the same issue. You basically need to give it one full day of recovery when ever you shred credit card or CD.

2 Star Review Needs full-auto mode

Strengths:

Small, convenient kitchen-friendly appearance

Weaknesses:

MUST PRESS POWER BUTTON BEFORE SHREDDING - CANNOT LEAVE IT ON.

Posted Dec 30, 2006 - My biggest issue with this shredder is that shredding is a two-step process. First, you need to press the Power button to turn it on, then insert something to be shredded. It cannot be left on. While this is probably a safety feature, there should be an option to leave it on all the time. That way, I can just walk up to it and start feeding it junk mail, just like I previously fed junk mail into the garbage.

Strengths:

Good power

Weaknesses:

Low or no quality

Posted 1 year ago - First one died after a few months of light use. Got a replacement and it's dead right out of the box. Garbage. Buy something else.

1 Star Review Don't buy it

Strengths:

Okay for very light use. Compact, looks good.

Weaknesses:

Dies under heavy use

Posted 1 year ago - Worked fine for seven months of light use, then died one weekend when I was doing more shredding than usual. Forget it. Buy another brand.

1 Star Review DO NOT PURCHASE!!

Strengths:

Great work-out carrying this thing from and back to Staples.

Weaknesses:

Does not shred. Stops working after very little use.

Posted 1 year ago - Staples is wasting their customers time by producing this item. Bought one and returned it after it stopped working (2 days). Thought maybe it was a lemon and got another one as replacement. It literally worked for about 5 minutes. You are wasting your time with this purchase.

1 Star Review Horrible Shredder!

Strengths:

Shreds junk mail without the need for opening.

Weaknesses:

Doesn't last very long!

Posted Jun 1, 2008 - We bought this unit a little more than six months ago. At the time, we liked it so much, that we bought one for my mother-in-law. Bad news. Both ours and hers died within a day or two of each other. We will never buy this shredder again.
