5 Star Review Amazing - beat my expectations by far!

Strengths:

Large keys with great feel & response, yet small enough to be quite portable

Weaknesses:

Typing numbers & symbols takes some getting use to; split space bar also throws me off sometimes

Posted Jul 29, 2005 - This works great on my Dell Axim x50v in conjunction with the Think Outside bluetooth mouse. With both devices setup, my PDA works like a desktop computer! Though the initial wireless setup with my handheld was a little confusing, once I got the keyboard connected, it has performed very well. Reconnecting is fast & easy after the initial configuration. While I had feared the keyboard might be too small for my liking, I was incorrect. In fact, the keys are the same size as those on my desktop keyboard. In order to make the keyboard smaller, however, there are only 4 rows of keys (the top row of numbers are omitted). In order to type numbers & symbols, you have to press a function key along with the designated key - this takes some practice & I don't think I'll be touch typing numbers on this thing anytime soon (not that I could on my desktop either). The space bar is somewhat awkwardly split in the center, which makes my fingers feel a bit uneasy when I go to press it. I would recommend investing in some rechargeable AAAs so you don't have to throw away batteries every few months. The included carrying case for the keyboard is a great idea to protect it from scratches, etc. Overall, very impressive!

2 Star Review Great Product, Serious Drawbacks

Strengths:

Good, compact product.

Weaknesses:

No driver for Windows Mobile 6.

Posted Feb 12, 2008 - Product has basic functionality with Windows Mobile 6 though lacking in a driver. I contacted the manufacturer about getting a driver for WM6 and I was told that they did not have one and did not intend to create one. This limits many of the advanced features that the keyboard offers.

4 Star Review Stowaway Blurtooth Keyboard

Strengths:

Small and Light

Weaknesses:

Somewhat unsteady on sides when typing close tro edges of keyboard

Posted Nov 29, 2005 - Overall, this is a good product that will work with most all bluetooth enabled devices. One issue is that there is no support undeer the two sides so when typing keys near the edges of the keyboard it tends to be unsteady if one has a "heavy" typing hand. A second issue is that there no good specific insytructions printed for the Treo 650 on all the shortcuts but their support people will help ansering questions. Overall, a good product.

4 Star ReviewThis keyboard has many nice qualities, but it also ...

Strengths:

The keys are full size and nicely resistent.

Weaknesses:

The keyboard case has a significant design flaw. The ends are not supported, so when you press keys on the left and right edges (such as the Shift key) the keyboard tips.

Posted Dec 24, 2004 - This keyboard has many nice qualities, but it also has a significant design flaw, which surprised me coming from what's supposed to be the Mercedes of travel keyboard companies. The engineer who designed the clever folding case apparently did not build a prototype and try typing on it before putting it into production. The keyboard folds up into a case that's less than 6" wide. The case serves as the keyboard's base when unfolded, supporting the center of the keyboard. The left and right sides of the keyboard float 1/4" above the surface of the table, so pressing keys on the sides (for example, the Shift key) causes the keyboard to tip. It’s impossible to touch type because the keyboard tips so wildly from side to side, and I bought the keyboard so I could enter data quickly. I solved this problem by creating supports out of pieces of cardboard cut to fit on either side of the base and glued together in layers like plywood to the necessary height. I thought of trying to velcro them onto the keyboard, but anything attached to the underside would prevent it from folding up. As it turned out, though, this wasn't necessary. The non-slippery surface of the cardboard is enough to keep it in place. Once I solved this problem, I was able to actually try out the keyboard. The keys are full size and the resistance is good, so once the keyboard is stabilized it feels much like typing on a notebook. The big difference is that some of the keys are laid out differently, which greatly slows down a touch typist who is used to keys always being in the same place. To minimize the size and weight of the keyboard, Think Outside removed the standard fourth row of keys. You have to hold down Function keys to type the numbers and symbols usually found here. I think this was a mistake. The additional weight and bulk of an extra row is minimal, but the slow-down in typing forced by the need to locate and press two keys is significant. I knew this would be a problem before I bought the keyboard, but I bought it anyway because of the good things I read about the size and touch of the keys (which happily turned out to be true). I wish Think Outside would at least make some models with the fourth row of keys. Every review I've read of this keyboard complains about the missing fourth row, and yet they continue to do this. I'll bet If they offered a model with the fourth row, it would greatly out-sell the ones without. People buy this keyboard so they can enter data fast. It makes no sense to alter the keyboard in a way that significantly slows how fast people can type just to save less an ounce or less of weight. This again makes me think that the engineer who designed the keyboard does not do a lot of typing himself. There's a removable attachment on the back of the keyboard where you can set your PDA either horizontally or vertically. Since a different tilt is needed for a PDA set horizontally, you can move the wire support back. It takes some pressure to move the wire, and it looks to me like if you’re not careful, the plastic pieces that hold it down could easily break off, making the support unusable. Also, the plastic piece that holds the PDA steady on the bottom isn't quite high enough, so when you tap on the screen with the stylus, the PDA tends to slip up over the edge and fall back. I wish the PDA holder was better designed and sturdier. I know that many companies save money these days by distributing manuals only electronically, but I find it very annoying - and especially in this case, since I really wanted and needed to read the manual. It's 30 pages with color pictures, and I had to print it out myself. Note that the documentation fails to say something important: the software must be installed in RAM - not ROM, and not on an external card. Okay, good qualities... I already said that the keys are full size and nicely resistant. This is a big plus. I've seen mobile keyboards with keys so small that even my small hands were cramped trying to type on them. There is built-in access through function keys to the typical programs found on a Pocket PC (Calendar, Contacts, Word, Excel, etc.), plus keys for accessing the Today screen, the Programs and Settings folders, and the Close and New functions. -Tab toggles through open programs just like on a desktop computer. In case these aren't enough (or if you don't use a Pocket PC), you can set up to ten additional hotkeys to any app you like. Settings let you adjust the repeat delay and rate, and choose from a variety of layouts for different countries (default is US). There's an option to make your Bluetooth connection secure so that others can't eavesdrop on what you're typing. There are a bunch of other options as well - click sound on or off, auto-correct options, etc. All in all, I'm happy with this purchase. The Stowaway keyboard isn't perfect, but from what I've seen it's the best option out there at the moment.

Strengths:

Very easy to Pair, ergonomic design, light weight.

Weaknesses:

You need to use th FN key to use the numbers, this sometimes slow down your typing.

Posted Nov 3, 2004 - This is a very good product, I used the very first Stowaway but this is 1000 times better. It has a lot of functions to access applications in your PDA. The space Bar is divided in too to be able to fold the keyboard, at the beginning feels a little odd but you just need to get use to it.

5 Star Review Great key board

Strengths:

Compact, Sturdy, Great key layout, Battery life, Ease of connection

Weaknesses:

It's pricy.

Posted Sep 28, 2005 - A great keyboard for real quick and dirty tasks. Makes carrying a laptop through an airport almost obsolete. Bluetooth keyboards blow away infrared devices, due to the ability to use the device without worrying about how the infrared ports line up. This advantage is worth the extra 20 to 30 dollars more the Bluetooth keyboards cost.

5 Star Review Excellent keyboard for mobile computing...

Strengths:

Very small size, accurate typing (no dropped entries at 60 WPM), good keystroke feel, secure connection options, easy to establish connection, software allows programmable hot-keys.

Weaknesses:

Detatchable PDA/Phone stand is not very high quality like the rest of the keyboard.

Posted Aug 1, 2005 - **Make sure you install the keyboard drivers to the default directory or the keyboard will not connect (had to discover this fact online).** I have read other reviews highlighting the small size of this unit compared to the competition...and I am very pleased with my purchase. Finally, I can efficiently compute on the go.

4 Star Review Great Keyboard

Strengths:

Great keyboard feel, full size keys

Weaknesses:

Pairing not intuitive

Posted Jul 30, 2005 - I have had a wonderful experience with this keyboard. It is comfortable and works well with my LifeDrive with no delay in typing. I have not had a problem with the previous reviewers concern over the keyboard tiping, maybe I'm just lighter on my keys. The only problem I have had is repairing the keyboard with my LifeDrive after a hard reset. The key combination is not intuitive and I have to pull out the manual each time to repair the keyboard.

4 Star Review Great keyboard

Strengths:

compact, responsive keyboard - bluetooth is great!

Weaknesses:

kinda wobbly - but easily solved by putting a few papers underneath. Mostly, I wish there were dedicated number keys (like for the new blackberry keyboard from stowaway).

Posted Dec 28, 2005 - overall I say this is a fine high quality product. Very useful. installation instructions aren't the most clear. so be sure to (1) install into the default directory (2) when pairing with pocketpc, enter the password into the pda, and then Quickly! type in the password using the keyboard. At least in my case, I was not prompted on-screen to type the password via keyboard, neither was "speed" emphasized in the manual...

4 Star Review Good product - Stowaway

Strengths:

Very convenient to have. So much easier if you have to enter a lot of data than the PDA input screen. Keys feel solid, the keypad is well constructed. Case included. Not complicated to connect or use.

Weaknesses:

You have to use your finger nail to slide a release switch over before you can fold the unit up again (slight difficulty). You have to snap open/closed the PDA stand. I'm afraid it will break.

Posted Mar 7, 2008 - I had some connection issues with my ASUS A626 PDA. It had it been working with a secure Bluetooth connection and then just stopped after I connected my phone with a secure bluetooth connection to the PDA. The tech guy told me I couldn't have two secure connections ??? [Tech support answered quickly] Anyway, I re-established an unsecured connection and it has been working pretty well since. Once in a while it doesn't sync up right away, but with a few clicks you can get it working again. The lack of a top row is a pain. I would have rather had the unit be 1" bigger and include the number keys; but that isn't a reason not to buy the unit.
