5 Star Review Very Impressed

Strengths:

Picture quality, ease of use, aesthetics

Weaknesses:

No lighting on remote

Posted Oct 3, 2006 - I have to preface this by saying that I haven't maximized the set's capability (i.e., I haven't read the owner's manual) yet. So while I can't comment on all the advanced features, I can say that I have found using the set easy and intuitive. Picture quality is excellent, although I knew this when I bought it. I compared pictures of all the 42" and 50" HD sets at Circuit City, and I thought the HP-S5053 and the competing Panasonic stood head and shoulders above everything else. When I went back a second time with my wife, we both thought the Samsung was visibly superior to the Panasonic. The set's sound quality is impressive too (I have no surround system at the moment), although I should note that we have the TV mounted in a pretty small living room. As noted, the only weakness I've experienced is lack of backlighting on the remote. This seems pretty stupid since you need a dark room for optimal plasma viewing. Not a huge deal however.

5 Star Review A Great Picture, But Set died after three days

Strengths:

The picture quality of this set is amazing. I compared to dozens of other plasmas. Richness and depth of color was not matched by any other set I saw.

Weaknesses:

Remote is "cheezy", could do better. Cable card or even SD Card would be a great plus.

Posted Nov 17, 2006 - I bought this set because the picture was the best I had seen on a plasma set up to now. I originally was going to get a set with 1080p but this picture was too good to pass up. The set totally died after 3 days while watching a movie. I don't know if it is just this particular set or a common problem. I decided to replace this set with an identical replacement because of the picture quality. (Note that the shiny black plastic on the body of the TV and stand is a dust "magnet".)

1 Star Review SAMSUNG 50" PLASMA

Strengths:

Nice picture and price

Weaknesses:

TV made a noise and got hot, stopped playing

Posted 1 year ago - TV stopped playing after making a noise and popping. Manufacturer would not replace because they said it was physical damage. TV had no physical contact, We saw a small line in it and we took it back. Afterwards there were more lines. TV had not been dropped or anything. No dents or any kind of physical damage. TV played for 2 weeks. Purchased at Brandsmart for $898.00 Was told by an Engineer that when the TV made the noise and popped it probably cracked then,Samsung said it was not covered by warranty. Will never purchase another tv from Samsung. Also purchased a smaller LG that we have not had any problems with. We chose the Samsung over the Panasonic, never will do that again.

Weaknesses:

Posted Jul 5, 2006 - The Samsung 50" Plasma S5053 T.V. is everything I expected. This is my first Plasma HD, and I would reccomend this to anyone who does not have a HD Television. The picture is so sharp it's amazing. There are all types of HD T.V.s out there and I did my homework on picking the right one. THIS IS THE RIGHT ONE, believe me you will not be disappointed.

5 Star Review Samsung has hit one out of the park!

Strengths:

Astounding picture quality.

Weaknesses:

One small gripe: no CableCard slot (not that I would use it anyway).

Posted May 19, 2006 - I received the TV today from the delivery company and immediately hooked it up to my HDMI upconverting DVD player (a Denon DVD-3910 if you must know) and was simply blown away by the astoundingly cinematic picture quality. Details that I have never seen on other monitors simply jumped off the screen. I am not using the on-board tuner, so I can't speak to the quality of the over-the-air picture, but the TV looks great through my Comcast digital cable DVR in 720P high def. My primary interest in this unit was the 10,000:1 contrast ratio and Samsung reputation for innovation and value. I'm using the display in a home theater format with a Denon AVR-4306 receiver and the above mentioned Denon DVD player. Overall, a great plasma television, especially considering the price I paid: $2799, delivered, no tax from Amazon.com.

5 Star Review A VERY GOOD PLASMA!!

Strengths:

The Picture Quality, HDTV, Sound, everything!!

Weaknesses:

no Card reader, It would be good to have it in this tv.

Posted Jul 6, 2006 - Overall, this TV is a great buy! I got an employee discount on this TV, 2,400 at best buy, probably a great deal considering this retails to 3,500. I love this Plasma, I recommend people to get this TV.

5 Star Review Best TV in Plasma Industry!!!

Strengths:

-Great design! Hidden speakers are great!! -HDTV color is awesome -Integrated HDTV Tuner, works great with OTA HDTV. -Lots of inputs including, 2 HDMI inputs, PC VGA, 2 composite

Weaknesses:

-Remote Control kinda sucks.. -NO Cablecard (I don't use it anyway)

Posted Jul 17, 2006 - This TV is one of the best HDTV you can get in the market right now. I was waiting until 50" FULL HDTV (1080p) Plasma or LCD, comes out, but after looking at the TV in Bestbuy, I decided to get this TV. Bestbuy had 40" Samsung Full LCD HDTV on display connected to Samsung's Blu-Ray player, but I couldn't see any difference with 1080P and 768P HDTV. It could be because it was 40", but still, it looked so much better than Panasonic, Pioneer 50" Plasma HDTV. I really loved the design, especially the hidden speakers. I don't think speakers can't be detached, but it doesn't matter. It looks so much better with speakers. The speakers has virtual surround system, which means it reflects the sound in a closed room, which it virtually plays on 5.1ch.. But I use home theater speaker system, so I haven't really tried on this. Picture is great. I bought Terk HDTVi antenna to receive free OTA HDTV channels, and it works great. After looking at the HDTV, I couldn't go back to cable TV. Samsung S5053 has lots of inputs. It has 2 HDMI inputs, which I used for up-conversion DVD player, and other one, I left it for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray Player. I'm using 2 component inputs for my XBOX and PS2, PC inputs for Home Theater PC, and I don't use any analog inputs such as S-Video or Composite. Now the weaknesses... Remote control isn't that good. This remote is supposed to be a universal remote control, which means it will let me control DVD Player, Cablebox, and VCR.. I tried the code, so that I can use my DVD player, but it doesn't work that good. Anyways.. I use Logitech Harmony 880 Remote Control, which works great with TV, and my DVD player. This TV doesn't have cablecard. I don't use channel guide anyways, so it didn't really matter to me. Overall, I would recommend this TV to anyone who is looking for a new plasma TV. It is great, and it is worth every penny.

5 Star ReviewThis is my 3rd plasma television and by far the be ...

Strengths:

# of Connections, Picture Quality, Viewing distance and angles, Clarity, Fit and Finish

Weaknesses:

No cable card (but not a big deal because the cable companies are not doing a good job with it), Can not control the R/B/G individually, Remote

Posted May 25, 2006 - This is my 3rd plasma television and by far the best. I own last year models HP-R4252 and that TV really sucks and vowed never to purchase another Samsung again, but after viewing the HP-S5053 in CC I was overwhelmed by the picture quality and couldn't believe it was a Samsung. The picture blows away Panasonic (including the bezel look), Hitachi, LG and the other competitors except Pioneer. I purchased the plasma within a week and it was the best decision I have made for a TV. The clarity, picture quality is phenomenl. This includes HD Channels, Digital Channels (which some I thought were being broadcast in HD but was Digital) and DVD. SD channels are handled quite well especially compared to other digital televisions including plasma, DLP and LCD. The black bezel makes this television look elegant in any decorum. There is nothing really bad to say about this Plasma television. If you are looking for a new 50" plasma this is the way to go. You will not regret your purchase. Search the internet for reputable online retailers and you can save $700-$800 off of the big box store price ($3499 cc/bb).

5 Star Review Love my Samsung!

Strengths:

Picture quality, price, sleek black cabinet.

Weaknesses:

Remote control.

Posted Jun 26, 2006 - My husband and I decided that since we both enjoy watching lots of TV shows, we might as well get the best TV we could afford. That's exactly what we did with this purchase of the Samsung 50" plasma. Picture quality unsurpassed. Compared with several other models in the store, and this was the best picture by far. Connected through HD cable, and have become addicted to the Discovery channel, just to watch those nature shows in HD. Unbelievable clarity and gorgeous colors. User manual and connections on back are clear, making it easy to set up. Remote control is not as user-friendly, with some of the buttons small and hard to find. Almost bought a lesser quality TV because it was several hundred dollars cheaper, but instead I shopped around online and found this Samsung at dbuys.com for only $2844, with no tax or shipping costs. Can't wait for football season to watch the games in HD on this great Samsung plasma TV!

5 Star Review Enjoying the wide screen

Strengths:

Picture

Weaknesses:

None evident

Posted Aug 6, 2006 - Looked at a lot of plasmas. and read a lot of reviews prior to making this purchase. There may be better plasmas out there, but I feel the price and quality combination of this television is not easily surpassed. It looks classy when it's on, and when it's off. It has been such a pleasure to watch, that I have been watching old movies again to see them on a larger screen. It appears that there was much I either missed or have forgotten, because I have seen many scenes I don't remember. My biggest problem is providing good (high definition) signals for the television to reproduce. Overall I have enjoyed this purchase, and recommend this to people looking for a good 50" plasma for a reasonable price.

5 Star Review Samsung HPS 5053

Strengths:

Sharp & great looking plasma tv, nice piano black finish! Great PQ, has hidden speakers, which also includes two HDMI inputs. Great pq, has capability to amplify ota digital signals.

Weaknesses:

No cablecard or firewire inputs (not that you really need one). Blue light can be annoying to some (but could be turned off as an option). Otherwise not much weaknesses I can speak of.

Posted Jun 16, 2006 - I bought this after comparing it with panny and pion and the rest and was blown away by it's pq and great looks. Worth every penny I paid for, and looks great in my family room. Was watching the NBA finals and the World Cup of soccer on HD and I was blown away by the sheer beauty of it. I used to have a HD projector tv and would not want to come back to it. I highly recommend it and you would not be sorry for taking one home!

5 Star Review Samsung Plasma 50 inch TV

Strengths:

Picture quality, speaker sound and the frame

Weaknesses:

Have not found any, but they would probably be minor since the picture is 95% of the TV's evaluation (IMO.)

Posted Sep 30, 2006 - Definitely the best 50 inch plasma screen on the market. I have LCD screens, but the dark colors are just so more vivid on plasmas. The speakers (which are at the bottom of the unit) are very good, though I do use my own speakers for audio. The frame design is the best. Glossy black which looks fantastic when mounted on a wall. One word of caution. Ensure that you get a quality shipper when you order on-line. My first TV showed up with a crack down the middle and it was a nightmare dealing with the on-line vendor to get a replacement. Knowing what I know now, I would have paid for a better on-line seller since this is such an expensive piece of equipment. I am extremely pleased with this TV, especially for a price that is under $3,000.

4 Star Review Excellent Choice!

Strengths:

Picture quality; both HD and regular tv

Weaknesses:

Remote is a little awkward...

Posted Dec 27, 2006 - I was about to buy a mid level 50" plasma (Vizio) for $1,688 at Sam's Club. Made a call to abt (Chicagoland Electronics retailer) and they offered me the Samsung 50" (5053) for $1,794. Since the set normally goes for $2,499 (Best Buy) I know I got a great deal. Fabulous picture on both HD and regular cable channels. Sound is ok, but just hooked up Samsung 2.1 surround sound home theater so not an issue. Great set at retail. For the price I paid...unbelievable...

5 Star Review Can't get enough

Strengths:

Picture quality, # inputs, case finish and design

Weaknesses:

Remote, no SD/MMC card slot

Posted Oct 27, 2006 - After looking and reading about Plasma HDTVs (I can't remember for how long) I found the Samsung HP-S5053 and can't be more pleased. The price was right and the picture will be hard to beat. Makes it hard to watch the 32inch LCD in the bedroom. Mine is connected to the Family Room Theater 7.1 system so I don't use the sound from the TV. I have an upconvert DVD changer connected using HDMI and all other video sources (my A/V Receiver has an upconvert circuit for VCR, games and DTV signals) going in by S-Video, next will be an Entertainment PC connected into the VGA Port. I really enjoy winding down at the end of the day in a recliner in front of this TV. Would recommend to anyone.
