1080p resolution is the "gold standard" for HDTVs. There are lots of 1080p rear-projection TVs to choose from, but flat-panel sets like this Sharp LCD with full 1920 x 1080-pixel precision are still rare. The 37" LC-37D90U displays images with dazzling 1080p detail and clarity, and also accepts 1080p signals, like those from Blu-ray high-definition players. A steady stream of innovations has kept Sharp's AQUOS TVs at the forefront of LCD design, and for 2006 they really went all out. Sharp's Multi-Pixel technology: each pixel is divided into two sections to dramatically improve off-angle viewing — both horizontally and vertically. Compared to last year's models, picture contrast has been improved by 50%, yielding deeper blacks and a richer range of shadow detail. Plus, Sharp's backlight system enhances overall color reproduction by adding a deeper, more vivid crimson to the three conventional colors (red, green, and blue). High-resolution screens thrive on high-res signals. The LC-37D90U can receive over-the-air HDTV programming without the need for a separate tuner box. The versatile array of inputs includes four different types of HD-capable connections: component video, DVI, HDMI, and 2-way "DTVLink" for use with compatible HD recorders. minimize

5 Star Review Sharp LC37D90U

Strengths:

Picture quality

Weaknesses:

I can't think of any.

Posted Dec 16, 2006 - I read reviews like those found here about this tv and a hand full of others, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung. I read experts reviews next and settled on the Sharp. It arrived with the power supply defective, dissapointing but Sharp stepped right up and replaced it immediately through a local factory service tech. I am extraordinarily impressed with this tv. I am not a tekkie when it comes to consumer electronics but I can and did comparison shop both on line and in the local stores to see up close and personal and in my opinion Sharp really nailed it. I also read in quite a number of reviews that people were delighted with their purchase of the Oppo 970 DVD player so I ordered one of those for $150 through Amazon. It plays DVDs in just about every format, CDs in just about every format and the experts reviews consistently rate it above almost every player in the $1000+ range. It only handles one DVD or CD at a time but the quality is astonishing. Read more about this unit before you buy!

4 Star Review Sharp 37d90u

Strengths:

picture quality, removable speakers, excellent appearance, and variety of inputs. Excepts 1080P input.

Weaknesses:

doesn't have cablecard and lacks PIP

Posted Aug 6, 2006 - Purchased the LC-37D90U because of it's improved HD which will make this TV compatible with future broadcast and HD DVD improvements. (1920x1080) There is a definite picture improvement over the Sharp 37D7U which I traded up from. Even non HD programs are rendered better with this TV. The lack of the cablecard and PIP where minor drawbacks when weighed against the 1920x1080 resolution. Sharp should put out this TV with all the available bells and whistles

5 Star Review Worth The Wait

Strengths:

Teriffic picture, great audio, handsome design.

Weaknesses:

Doesn't accept a cable card.

Posted Jul 8, 2006 - This is our second Sharp HD LCD, as we are totally happy with our first unit. We waited for the 37D90U to come out because we wanted 1080P resolution to give us some future protection. DVD's from the upconverting player look excellent on this set. The colors are true, bright, and vibrant, and the images are crystal clear and crisp. Motion issues in the image are virtually non-existent, thanks to the 6ms response time. The Sharp engineers have improved what was already a superior product. If you are considering a 37" LCD, you will love this set.

4 Star Review Great Value

Strengths:

Well constructed. Fantastic whites. Best blacks I've seen in an LCD. Versatile connectivity

Weaknesses:

Limited viewing angle

Posted Sep 3, 2006 - One of the best LCD pictures I've experienced. This monitor is capable of being the center of you home theater system if you have space limitations. Has a little bit of problem resolving some flesh tones on some HD DVD material but other than that the picture is gorgeous. One of the few monitors on the market capable of accepting a direct 1080p signal through HDMI connection. (note: not all Sharp's monitors in the same line as the LC-37D90U do). HD DVD (1080i) into this monitor looks phenomenal. Set up is easy. Controls are well laid out and logical.

5 Star Review Delighted with the Sharp 37D90U

Strengths:

Picture clarity is phenomenal, menus are easy to use.

Weaknesses:

None noted.

Posted Nov 20, 2006 - The reviews below do a teriffic job of pointing out the technical strengths of this TV. For you non-techies (like me), know that there is nothing to fear in the set-up process - - it was a no-brainer. The TV's adjustment menus are straightforward and easy to use. The picture clarity and the brightness are the best I've seen on any HD-LCD set. I disagree with the negative comments of some others regarding viewing angles; I find the picture to be clear, bright and undistorted to nearly 180 degrees. I'm delighted with this purchase, no regrets.

5 Star Review Aquos LC-37D90U

Strengths:

This picture is phenomenal. What an upgrade in terms of contrast and clarity. I expect this picture quality to hold up against the ever-improving technology inovations for a long time.

Weaknesses:

The stereo sound is just okay, but the good news is the speakers are detachable, so the tv takes up less space. I have the system hooked up to my surround sound system and it sounds great.

Posted Nov 19, 2006 - I checked out a lot of lcd tv's before buying the Sharp. I wanted a smaller screen to match my viewing distance and this is clearly the best picture around in a 37" size. The 1080p resolution is a definite upgrade and worth the extra $600 I paid.

4 Star Review Sharp 37d90u

Strengths:

Resolution (true 1080p), Sound, Connections (2 HDMI, 2 IEEE), Appearance

Weaknesses:

Menus

Posted Jul 4, 2006 - I spent a while debating what TV to get. I already have a Sony LCD (32") in the bedroom. Although, for the living room, I wanted something a little larger and with slightly more capabilities. The 1080p is a great "future proofing" choice and the 37d90u is one of the only sets out there that can TURELY display a 1080p picture (be careful of those that claim to be 1080p but do NOT have an input that can even accept 1090p). The sound (which is not something i normally look for in a TV) is amazing...great base. Finally the number of inputs Sharp has put into the set is great, although i wish there was a USB input. On the negative side...the menus are a little difficult and seem to be slow. When switching between inputs there is an annoying delay in the menus and sometimes it seems that i have to hit a button twice for the menu to respond. All in all though, the TV is pretty amazing.

4 Star Review Great LCD for the money

Strengths:

Crisp picture and colors, classy looking.

Weaknesses:

Viewing angle not as advertized.

Posted Oct 15, 2006 - I bought this set to replace my gigantic Sony 32" WEGA HDTV and I wanted a set that would occupy about the same footprint without busting my budget. I read all the reviews and went to the stores to look at the set and was sold on the Sharp. Set up was a breeze and the parameters are easily adjustable through the on screen menus. I like everything about it, except that the sweet spot for the optimum picture seems to be only about 90 degrees, not the 176 advertized. However, since the unit sits in the corner of my den, this is not a major problem.

5 Star Review Expensive, but worth it

Strengths:

Fantastic picture quality of both high definition and standard definition TV as well as DVDs using a good upconverting DVD player

Weaknesses:

Needs inputs of high signal strength, or your picture quality will suffer badly. Cost is higher than most other sets, but you truly get what you pay for with this TV.

Posted Sep 19, 2006 - This is my first HD TV and also my first LCD TV. I spent a lot of time researching on avsforum.com and bought this set sight unseen based on numerous positive comments. I first hooked up my digital cable and the picture quality (PQ) was terrible. I soon discovered that my numerous splitters had degraded the signal strength below what this TV needed to display good PQ, even though it was fine for my old Sony CRT TV. Running a line direct from the cable entry into the house solved the problem and the PQ is now great, even though my cable company only transmits standard definition (SD) broadcasts. From my digital cable box, the SD PQ is nearly equal to my Sony CRT PQ - which is a high complement for any HDTV. Next, I installed a mast mounted amplifier on my roof antenna and was able to pull in all the Philadelphia over-the-air HDTV broadcasts from 35 miles away. The PQ of HD broadcasts is amazing! You will not want to watch a SD set after seeing how good HDTV looks. I then bought the highly recommended OPPO 971H upconverting DVD player and my regular DVDs almost look as good as HD. I don't know if the quality is due to the DVD player or the TV, but the combination produces great PQ. I have not yet hooked up my computer, but many buy this set for its ability to map the exact image on screen [1 to 1 pixel mapping]. I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'll wrap up by adding that I have seen none of the "backlight bleed" or side angle viewing problems that some have mentioned. I'm very pleased with my purchase and would have bought a second set for the bedroom if my wife had not vetoed the purchase.

4 Star Review Sharp 37d90u

Strengths:

Picture quality, 1080p, aesthetics, detachable speakers

Weaknesses:

viewing angle

Posted Sep 15, 2006 - I have had this for a week now. Great picture quality - both SD and HD. 1080p does provide a lot of future proofing. The aesthetics are awesome as well. The big weakness is definitely the limited viewing angle - the image appears a bit washed up at more than 45 degrees. That apart, it is definitely offers the best price/value/quality solution.

4 Star Review Great TV for a HTPC

Strengths:

2 HDMIs and 1 DVI with 1080P

Weaknesses:

Only 1 compent input and its 1080i.

Posted Sep 15, 2006 - I am completely happy with this TV. I have this hooked up to my PC using 2 Geforce 6800GTs in SLI mode. MAME and all my other emulators look fantasic. Newer 3D games look just as good or better than a X-Box 360. Play back with WinDVD looks great as well.

5 Star Review Sharp AQUOS = Exceptional Choice

Strengths:

SUPERB pix quality; excellent number of inputs

Weaknesses:

Menus are a bit slow - but, delay is not so much that it causes any distress

Posted Jul 8, 2006 - We selected this as we had two Sharp standard tv's - that were (at that time) equal to the Trinitron in quality. Each set lasted 10 yrs - with only a minor repair. This set is equivalent to their standard of excellence. Highly recommended!

4 Star Review A Sharp choice

Strengths:

Excellent HD picture quality. Very good attached / detached speaker.

Weaknesses:

Took a little time to adjust skin color and decrease the color. No Optical audio outputs

Posted Sep 16, 2006 - Hooked up and turn on and enjoy true 1080i right away. I can't wait to hook this TV up with the Sony Play Station 3 when it becomes available. I bet it will be great with 6ms response time and my home theater sound system ;-)

4 Star Review Won't be disappointed

Strengths:

Picture Quality(true 1080p),Appearance, good variety of connections offered

Weaknesses:

navigation thru menus is slow, sound is so-so

Posted Jul 12, 2006 - I waited serveral months in anticipation for this set. Was not disappointed when it finally arrived. I found the menus easy to navigate but slow. Picture quality is great. The LCD panel is only half of the "home theater experience". You'll want to connect panel to a home theater sound system as the speakers or so-so. Set-up required little effort.
