Awesome deal

Strengths: Great picture with digital cable. Standard definition is excellent as well. The DVD quality is top notch. Audio is excellent and start up time is less than other brands on the market...

Weakness: Heavy unit...get a buddy to help you.

Excellent overall television. It is rated #4 in it's category by consumer reports; however, the bang for the buck is there with this unit. The picture is phenomenal. My wife and I love it. I switched over to digital cable because of this TV and I am happy to pay the extra $$ for the service now...

Make sure your room is big enough to handle it. I am about 17 feet away from the TV and it is perfect. We have the TV in a bright room and the picture is clear and the glare has no effect on it.

One final thing. This model actually looks as good as, if not better than, the newer model. There was an adjustment made to the black contrast on the new unit but the new Panasonic is using the 600U's processor. I got this unit for less than $1800 and I was happy to buy it...

Don't think about it just buy it!

Strengths: Picture and Sound are tops. Features like no others have.

Weakness: Only one tuner, so with PIP you'll need a second source. A little thicker than most Plasma TV's.

Flat out the absolute best 50" Plasma TV you can get for the price. Paid only $1378 on June 25, 2007 at my local Electronics-Expo. Even still this TV's picture and sound is about the best you can get in a 1080i Plasma regardless of price. Plus this TV is stacked with features that newer Panasonics and other brands are lacking like:

1. Cable Card - which enables you to receive High Def programming without the use of a cable box. This is the main feature I was looking for in a Plasma.
2. TV Guide Programming - an awesome and under-appreciated feature.
3. PIP - another awesome feature that is becoming obsolete for no good reason. PIP on this TV is limited but still great to have.
4. SD Card Slot - nice to have but not necessary.
5. 2 HDMI, 2 Component, 1 PC and 3 Composite jacks.

Main downside is that while most of this TV is about 3.5" thick the very bottom of it bulges out another 2 inches so it doesn't mount as flat against a wall as some others. Not a big deal though.

TH-50PX600U

Strengths: Picture quality, Cabinet appearance, Plug and Play

Weakness: Manual is not very specific on operation of the unit, The back has built in sub woofer - had to adapt the wall mount to hang the 600U, Remote adequate but could be better

Update: 4/4/2008
Well, I have had the 50 inch 600U for a year and a half now and no major issues to report. With more HD content available we watch this tv more than our 106" HD projector because of how awesome the picture is.
1.No dead pixels.
2.Sharp & Bright picture (was in vivid mode , but changed to standard mode on the advice of a friend to extend life of the TV).
3.No repairs needed to date.

Minor issues:
1. Glare off the front glass. I have an open area with transom windows and some drop down lighting. You can see the lights in the picture, and the sun through my blinds as well. I think you will find this on most plasmas.
2. with everyday use the remote is showing some wear.
3. would like to have picture stay in H Fill mode (Aspect)all of the time.

Would still buy this TV again today. Only regret is I did not purchase the 65 inch.

Original Review:
After months of research on 50 inch plasma TV's I went to my local BB with the intent to pick up an LG with the built in HD DVR. As I was perusing the Magnolia Dept. I ran across the 600U (the unit) which is not found at many retailers at this time. The list on the unit was approx. $4000, I have found competition in my fair city of Indpls. has made retailers willing to deal (got a sweet deal). Keep in mind you will need some peripherals to go along with your new plasma, i.e.. Sanus VMDD26 double arm articulating wall mount and an extended warranty(EW). I picked up the four(4)year in home EW. These little extras will add roughly $1000 to your purchase. Sorry forgot I was writing a review of the unit. The unit is outstanding in almost every aspect, picture is awesome, set up was easy, cabinet is appealing to the eye, sound system works for me, speakers are nearly invisible, and you have multiple inputs on the back to hook up your components. Played with the SD card reader last night works fine, if you are having a party you can slide show JPEG copy's of works of art(kind of neat). The TV guide function is a little difficult, you need to program the guide then shut down your unit for 24 hours... Who can go without watching TV for that long, sounds like a vacation project. I still need to set up the unit the way I want it, estimated time one (1) week after purchase. Special note: The rear of the unit has built in sub-woofer which bumps out the bottom portion of the back by 3-4 inches. The wall mount would not fit correctly without sticking out 6 inches over the top of the unit. I was not happy at first, but with a little ingenuity and some assistance from my father who was visiting, we added 18 inches of 1 X 1 square metal post from my local hardware store. It came in 36" length and had pre drilled holes every inch and half. We cut it in half and added one(1) new hole per side. This pushed the wall mount away from the back of the unit enough to drop it below the top. And if I might say it looks like it came with the wall mount kit. I think sanus has an extension kit, however, the unit is so new none could be found. I opted for the cable card, works well, but lost a lot of the cable box functions. If you have the room, go with the box. The remote is adequate, I think over time I may warm up to it YTBD. In closing I would recommend the unit to anyone seeking a quality plasma with the latest technology.

PANASONIC 50PX600U

Strengths: PICTURE QUALITY IS OUT OF THIS WORLD,THE SET COMES EQUIPPED WITH A SD CARD SLOT AND HD CARD SLOT. AUTOMATIC TV FUNCTIONS ARE UPSALE TO SIMILAR MODELS ON THE MARKET

Weakness: MANUAL DOES NOT EXPLAIN ALL THE FUNCTIONS PROPERLY ESPECIALLY THE PICTURE IN PICTURE.

The picture quality of Panasonic is the best of the brands I looked at before purchasing. The 50PX600U has a sound system that is above average for a plasma. Having a cable card slot saves the monthly cost of the cable box rental. The SD card slot is great if you take a lot of pictures. The only down side I found is the picture and picture will only work through an added component as a VCR or DVR . The supplied manual does not explain the proper operation of the PIP , but once it is sourced through another componet that has a tuner it works fine, it just takes getting used too. Overall I would rate the 500PX600U 9 out of possible 10 for a plasma in this price range.

The Best Plasma on the Market!!!

Strengths: Crisp Picture, SD Card slot, Comes with a nice TV Stand

Weakness: Manual not so great, Remote could use some work...

I reviewed and looked at a lot of plasmas over the last 12 months and choose the Panasonic 50PX60OU. It worked great right out of the box. I was lucky to find it under $2000.00 locally. (CircuitCity came to the rescue, which beat the internet for pricing at the time). I have purchased a ton of stuff via the internet during the last few years but I was really Leary of ordering this item over the internet after reading so many horror stories if something should go wrong with it.

I feel the major issue with a plasma TV is it's picture. This one has a great display. We did not choose HD when signing up for satellite service and for the most part have not regretted it yet. I suppose in the future we will. However for now my wife and I watch whatever the satellite service provides and are mostly pleased with the service and this plasma TV.

We did however purchase an upscale DVD player with up-converting capability. In addition we also purchased an HDMI cable and WOW what a difference compared to what we used to have. The detail is immense!!!

In the future I will marry our plasma/DVD player with a Yamaha V1700 Receiver and IPOD. With matching surround speakers we should enjoy all of this for years to come!!!

Panasonic somehow improves its plasma's picture and...

Strengths: Picture, sound, variety of imputs, PC Connection

Weakness: Price, remote is a bit bulky and does not light up in the dark, but is an improvement over the 500U remote.

I sold my house about six months ago along with my 50" Panasonic plasma TH-50PX-500U. While I LOVED that TV and tried desperately to buy another for my new house, I was unable to find one as it had been discontinued. I researched relentlessly over the past six ((6) months and I mean relentlessly. If there was a review, I read it. I live just outside Manhattan and went into to look at various top notch plasma televisions, including: Fujitsu, Pioneer Elite, Marantz and Runco. The picture on this tv is equal to if not better to any of this much higher priced televisions at a fraction of the cost. I was able to bargain the salesperson down at PC Richards to $3200 (but they wanted $99 to ship and I had to pay sales tax). The day after I placed the order I contacted 6 ave. electronics www.6ave.com (they are an authorized panasonic retailer so your warranty is not voided) who provided free shipping, no sales tax. The tv arrived in mint perfect condition, in a perfect brand new unopened box. I paid $3300. I mounted this tv on the wall. I am using this tv with a Marantz amplifier, Marantz DVD player, a Sony ES 400 disc cd changer and B&W speakers. This TV complements my audio system brillantly and betters the picture of the older 500U model to boot. You can see this tv for yourself at Best Buy's magnolia for $3999, but unless you are a moron, do not buy it there.

Best plasma performance for the price!!

Strengths: great HD picture quality lots of inputs great sound

Weakness: pip does not work with all inputs

I just picked up the Panasonic TH-50px600u from BB and it is by far the best performing plasmas for the money you can get. I had a Philips plasma for 6 months and ended up returning it due to several features not functioning propoerly and just being overall disappointed with the set. I bought the panasonic plasma after a few months of research, and I must say that the research definitely paid off for me. Once this model came out, I had been eyeing it, buit due to the price, I had to settle for the Philips, but once the price came down on this, plus the help of a misprint in a a Tweeter sales ad and BestBuy's price matching policy, I was able to get this tv for an INCREDIBLE bargain. Now on to some useful information for people considering this tv:

you will defeinintely be impressed with the picture quality of high difenition channels. i have an antenna to receive all my local hd channels, and the pictures are truly amazing. I had thought that my philips had a great picture despite some of it's shortcomings in other areas, but this panasonic produced a better HD picture. normally, you are not supposed to see a huge difference in HD pictures from one set to the next, but wiht the panasonic, you truly can. the overall picture has a more 3-dimensional look to it than other sets I have seen. it is a bit hard to really explain this, but i believe that the panasonic is able to show more details in smaller areas than other plasmas, which in turn makes objects appear deeper. better shadow, color and detail at edges of objects such as people make them stand out more on the screen. if you compare plasmas at teh store, make sure the settings are similar and then you will see what i am talking about.

the included SD card slot is a great feature for those that have a digital camera and use it fairly often. you can pull the SD card from your digital camera, insert it in the front slot on the panasonic, and instantly start a slide show of your pictures. it also makes it a very quick way to check your photos to see if there is any blurriness when blown up. great little feature that more and more tv's are starting to incorporate.

now on to the sound. the speakers that are integrated on this set are heads and shoulders better than other tv's i have heard. the sound is crisp and clear, and the bass is very good for an integrated speaker system. i think that MOST people would be very satisfied with the sound quality coming from this tv if they are not able to purchase a home theater system right away. my philips plasma had muffled sound, even when i turned up the volume, but this panasonic truly has a crisper, richer sound level coming from it. panasonic decided to improve the speakers and add a subwoofer in this tv and it provides an overall great viewing experience.

the look of this tv is very attractive. some people prefer an all black tv, but i prefer this design with black and bright silver. some tv's are a dull gray or silver, but this tv has a nice bright silver case with a black border around the screen. the quality of the materials used are also very good and sturdy. i think everyone will be impressed with the tv stand that in included. the stand weighs about 40lbs, and is rock solid. it has a real metal mount on the stand, and the bottom base is a hard plastic. there is abosolutely NO fear of the tv tipping forward or backward when you place it on the stand, unlike some other cheap stands that come with other plasma brands (philips, are you listening??).

with all the great features and amazing picture quality of this tv, you will be hard-pressed to find a comparable set for the money. this is the top of the line model line dfor panasonic, and if you take a look at other brands and their top of the line models, this one easily out-performs them all. the one exception would be the pioneer elite series, but the picture quality is not even notciable between these two tv's, and the pioneer will set you back an additional $1000-$2000. do yourself a favor and head to the nearest BestBuy that has a Magnolia center and check this amazing plasma out!

My Last TV on Earth!

Strengths: Fantastic Picture with beautiful colors. Two HDMI inputs. PC input. Decent sound. Sleek cabinet.

Weakness: Written menu sucks! Too much coverage on TV GUIDE, and not much on the actual operations of the TV. HDMI does not support bitstream decoding.

Prior to buying the Panasonic, I purchased a factory refurbished 50" plasma TV from Philips outlet shop on the net. I paid $1515 for it. Unfortunately, there was a funny miscolored vertical line on the screen that stuck out like a sore thumb. Philips gave me a phone number for a local authorized service dealer to pick up the unit and repair it. After 3 weeks, neither Philips nor the service dealer decided "what and how to" repair it. I called the Customer Service and was able to persuade the rep to take the TV back. Needless to say, I became extremely careful in selecting the next flat-panel TV.

After numerous trips to various local electronic stores and extensive research on the net, I got even more confused in terms of what TV to buy: 46" 1080i or 1080p LCD or plasma 50" TV? Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic or Sony? Though most salesmen at the stores do recommend Panasonic/Toshiba for plasma, and Sony/Samsung for LCD.

One night, I walked into the local BEST BUY. They had several 50" plasma TVs lined up for comparison. I must say the Panasonic TH-50PX60U stood out as the best set. Later, I walked over to the Magnolia Theater and saw the Panasonic TH-50PX600U hung on the wall, along with other more expensive and elitist plasma TVs. I was completly sold to the Panasonic set because its picture quality was as sharp and as good, but the price was 2k less. I took the advantage of the Labor-Day weekend sale at BB, plus a discount coupon and a DIRECT-TV sign-up bonus, I paid around $3200 (tax and delivery included) for the TV. Believe me, I would like to buy the set on the net at an even lower price, but I learned my lesson!

One of the first thing you can't help noticing by comparing the Panasonic to Philips 50PF7220A is the colors. The reds are more red, the greens are more green, and the blues are more blue on the Panasonic. To professional photographers, it is like comparing Kodak film to Fuji film. The latter has more solid and vivid colors.

The second impressive thing is that I have an up-conversion Samsung DVD player, and the DVD picture on the Panasonic is less grainy than the Philips when the resolution rate on the DVD player is set as 720i or 1080i using the HDMI cable.

In terms of image clarity, both Panasonic and Philips deliver great 3-D HD picture. Once you are exposed to HD technologoy, you won't go back to analogue or digital broadcasting because you get many more local channels with better picture and sound. The Philips has an additional feature that will automatically resize a non-HD 4:3 ratio signal and fill up the 16:9 ratio screen. I am glad I no longer own the set because the resizings sometimes go completely out of control. In terms of off-air antenna reception, Philips has a better tuner because it displays channels with either strong or weak signals. Panasonic only displays strong-signal channels.

There are many other impressive things about the Panasonic TV: a sleek cabinet, decent sound, an attractive and secure table-top stand, 2-HDMI inputs (most TVs only include 1), PC connection, memory-card slot for photo presentation, a full-fuction remote-control that allows you to work with other electronic equipments of different brands. If this TV doesn't break down during its course of 60,000 hours, it will probably be my last TV on earth!

Stunning Picture!

Strengths: The Vibrant Colors, The Sound! All the Connections You'll Need and Cable Card Slot

Weakness: Haven't found anything!

I did a lot of searching before buying this. I must say this is my 1 st Panny TV. I was going between a Pioneer for more money because of true 1080P. Don't bother, This set has it all. You don't need a Hi Def cable box from your cable company, because the cable card decodes it even Hi Def. This saves you the monthly box rental charges. The cable card slot will not allow on demand and your TV guide service, but for me I didn't need it. If I want it later I can always get a box. The Sound System is Awesome. I have the TV in a 16x25 room and sound is excellent. No need for another group of speakers and another electric sucking applicance. It has the SD card slot, and you can take pictures of your favorite artwork and show them on your screen. Why settle for that 8 inch SD picture frame when you can use 50" The more I have looked into this set and have spoken to others about there woes, I know this was an excellent choice. The default setting out of the box are great but you need to set all your defaults to 0 for the 1st 100 hours. Then the perfect setting from the internet which also apply to the Panny 42" and 58" are Picture Mode= STD, Picture =+14 TO +22, Brightness=+8, COLOR=-1 TO -5, Tint= -4, Sharpness= 0 or -8 or -14, Color Temp= Warm, Enhanced Black Level= Off. These are the best ranges, but base it on your eyes. This set with these setting isn't even putting a strain on the set. Your eyes will feel like they are being pieced with lasers with these setting. Only use these AFTER the 100 hours. I want a 42 now for the Bedroom! I purchased on-line at One Call and everything was tremendous. Unit came on a pallet with shockwatches on it from Panasonic. The driver helped open it to check for any hidden damage and we brought it in. Prices came down for me to about $2349 delived so I jumped on it and put it on AMEX (blue or Gold) and it doubles your 1 year warranty for Free. Love it!

Hi

You indicate a very interesting strategy regarding nulling all picture controls for the first 100 hours. This would seem to make some good sense but could you provide the reference where you got this info from? Is it from Panasonic themselves? Ist here a Panasonic - hosted user forum somewhere? Any insight would be most helpful and appreciated. Thanks a lot

Simply amazing

Strengths: Great picture quality, inputs galore.

Weakness: PIP limitations

I will echo other reviewers on here that the picture quality and colors are amazing on this set. i bought a plasma with such reservation of ghosting and artifacting, but my fears were quickly laid to rest when i watched my first dvd. then i had HD Cable installed, and watching basketball in HD is, in a word, stunning. the ghosting and artifacting is very slight, only on high action situations, but even then, the 600u shines. be sure to do an online search for the optimal picture settings tho. that will affect your picture quality a great deal. and as others have said as well, is the PIP functionality is so-so. if you have something connected via HDMI, you cannot use PIP, only with component or composite inputs. so i have the cable line split about 5 different ways, into the VCR and DVD-recorder. so i can always use the PIP to watch 2 different channels via either one, but of course, no HD. I could not be happier with my purchase, so if you're looking for an affordable 50" plasma, THIS, is the one you should get. (unless of course you're looking to go bigger, then of course look into its 58" bigger brother). You will not be disappointed.

Can you be a bit more specific about how you have your cables split? For the life of me I cannot figure out how to watch two channels at once. I've tried splitting the cable all sorts of ways into my dvd player which I have setup as Component 1 but am obviously doing something wrong.
Thanks

basically, you need one tv cable split, going directly to the tv itself. with another, connect it to a dvd-RECORDER or vcr. say your vcr is connected to input 1, then you can split screen regular tv with input 1. therefore, you can watch a channel or the tv (direct), and another channel via the vcr. i'm not sure if thats clear or not...hope it helps!

Best TV we have ever had!!

Strengths: Excellent color and black levels. Great sound. Best looking cabinet

Weakness: TV-none Manual-ok

I have wanted a plasma TV for several years, the prices came down this summer so I started my search. After checking out various models at the big box stores,Pioneer, Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic, checking various web sites and reviewing articles on Plasma TV Buying Guide site I come to the conclusion that Panasonic was the best value in plasma TV. In September I purchased a Panasonic TH-50PX600U from PowerSeller NYC. They had a great price and a 5 star rating. This TV has more than met my expectations. The increase in contrast ratio and brightness have made the picture excellent and after tweeking the picture settings to the ones recommended in the Plasma TV Buying Guide site, the high def color is exceptional, even the old black and white movies on Monster HD are fun to watch. I feel this model Panasonic plasma TV is the best plasma I could own and many friends and family have agreed.

After reading all the glowing reviews I have to agree with all the comments which are pretty fair.
HOWEVER HERE IS THE WEAKNESS YOU WILL ONLY EXPERIENCE AFTER THE FACT:
PANASONIC BOASTS ITS CONCIERGE SERVICE. WELL I BOUGHT A 58" MODEL 600U.
ATER A WEEK I HAD A LINE STRAIGHT ACCROSS THE SCREEN. I CALLED PANASONIC CONCIERGE AND THEY TOLD ME TO TRY AND RESET THE TV AS NEW. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND TO NO AVAIL. I HAD ALSO PURCHASED EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM DBUYS (WHO ARE GREAT, BY THE WAY)
THE WARRANTY WAS STILL PANASONIC IN MY FIRST WEEK OF USE. PANASONIC PROMPTLY CALLED ME BACK TO SET UP AN IN HOME SERVICE CALL. AT THIS TIME THEY TOLD ME THAT I HAD TO TAKE THE 200LB TV OFF THE WALL. THEY DO NOT DO THIS. IMAGINE IF YOUR TV IS SIX OR SEVEN FEET UP. YOU NEED 4 PEOPLE WITH LADDERS TO TAKE IT DOWN!
I WAS LIVID AND BECAUSE OF THIS POOR SERVICE WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER PANASONIC. I NEED ANOTHER NOW FOR MY BEDROOM AND BECAUSE OF A SMALLER SIZEWOULD NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM.
ANYHOW THE GODS SMILED ON ME AND THE LINE CORRECTED ITSELF A DAY LATER.
WHEN YOU BUY NEITHER SLICK THE SALESMAN NOR PANASONIC THE GIANT WILL DISCLOSE THIS.
THE INSTALLS BY THE WAT RUN FROM $300-$800 ITS THE PROFIT THAT MAKES IT EXPENSIVE.

Great Picture

Strengths: Colors, Sound, and PIP

Weakness: None so far

I have just purchased a Panny 50PX600U and glad I did. I spent weeks researching other brands and decided on the Panasonic. We are very please with the picture as well as the sound which was a downfall on many of the other brands we looked at. With our new TV, college bowl games will never be the same. Not being all that technically minded as some of the other reviewers, I just say that this flat panel will enhance any home. However, the 600U has the upgraded speakers and you definitely can tell the difference from the 6U or 60U models, so if you're not going to hook it up to a home theater system go with the 600U. The cable card is a plus but the inept cable service guy took 3 trips to get it working properly, which was no fault of the TV. If you decide on this one, you'll be glad you did. At least I'm as pleased as can be.

Panasonic TH50PX600U 50" HDTV Plasma

Strengths: Great pictures. Easy to use remote control and to program it to replace others (DVD/VCR/Digital Box). The best for HD cables and DVDs. The sound system is great, and no need for home theater.

Weakness: Sound is not so great for regular TV stations and does oscillate from high to low. Also, the picture is not as good on a regular stations.

We love our 50" plasma TV. We are using it regularly to watch movies (so we go out less to the movie theaters). It was a bit difficult to find the right people to install it above our fireplace, in the brick wall. The front access for video camera is great. No need to go behind to connect it. Same for the photo card.

We never figured that out. We went to a Comcast store and received a HDTV box. We used HDM cable to connect it to our TV. Now the sound for all the channels is working fine. I wonder whether it was related to directly plugging the TV to the cable outlet?

Panasonic TH-50PX600U 50

Strengths: Picture quality; built-in speakers; numberous analog and digital inputs including PC connections; CableCARD ready

Weakness: Other than the weight, which is true for all plasma sets, none

The combination of picture quality, outstanding sound, ample analog and digital inputs, SD card slot, PC connectability and HDMI ports, make this best in class. Despite reservations about purchasing a set that was CableCARD ready, once Cablevision installed the card, the set was functional within 15 minutes. The TV Guide was functioning within 24 hours as advertized. The IR connection allows control of remote devices such as DVD players/recorders and VCRs. Nice to be able to avoid having to get a digital set top box from the cable company although the first generation of CableCARDs do not support two way communication so you can't use interactive or on demand features.
For the money, I highly recommend this set.

HDMI tuner gone bad

Strengths: color

Weakness: HDMI tuners gone bad

Had the TH50PX600U since 10/06 and has been great but both the HDMI tuners just went out all at once. Started with difficulty in gaining signal from digital cable box and I thought it was just the cable connection, but then the HDMI just went out instantaneously. Still works using component video, but not the same hi def signal. Been running in vivid color the entire time. Very disappointed this didn't last longer as I am a dedicated panasonic TV user for 20 years, now have to figure out how to repair as is out of warranty. Anyone that can provide help here would be most appreciated.
