Holy Cow.....wow.....OMG.......YEEEEESSS......

Started Dec 28, 2006

Strengths: natural, true-to-life colors unbelievable sharpness in HD, very good in standard easy to use controls and on-screen commands

Weaknesses: ......it makes me burst into joyful tears every time I turn it on.....

How can anyone describe the perfect television? I certainly can't because I am not well versed in electronic lingo but I can tell you, as a layperson with more than her fair share of TV watching time under her belt, that I can not imagine a time when I will ever regret buying the Pioneer PDP5071. Yes, my model is a 5071 which we got at Best Buy. I have not been able to ascertain the difference in the two model numbers unless Best Buy has some kind of proprietary deal with the manufacturer....you know how that goes. Anyway, we spent days....DAYS....watching televisions....doing side by side comparisons....and the Pioneer won hands down. Our Best Buy had sooooo many televisions there to view and we made sure we viewed them side by side with the Pioneer. All I can tell you is that the Pioneer's picture was so far beyond what any of the others offered visually that we could not have purchased anything else and felt good about it. We read every review we could get our hands on and were impressed that in addition to the excellent performance, there was very little after-purchase problems with breakdowns, malfunctions, etc. We have had ours for only a month or so but have experienced no problems whatsoever....unless EUPHORIA is a problem. Sure, this tv was priced higher than any other tv there. Best Buy had it on sale for $3200 when we went in. But they also took off $200 just because my husband asked if they gave discounts to first time plasma purchasers!! We got a 10% off coupon in the mail about a week after we purchased the tv and all the audio components, cables and a very nice tv stand....and they applied that coupon to our previous purchase as well.! So, we definitely got a good deal with those guys. I highly recommend going to BB and at least doing price comparisons.

Anyway, overall, YES...buy this tv. You will not regret it. It's a true gem.

That's awesome. I'm thinking about getting this TV myself but a friend of mine thinks LCD's are better. I disagree. I was looking at the Best Buy where I live as well. I also wasn't sure if I should get the Product Service Plan or not because it's an extra $400. What do you think? I know it's a good TV but I still am not sure how long it will last and how may repairs (if any, hopefully not) it will need. Please let me know.

Pioneer states that their products should give 60,000 hours of use. That means if you watch tv 8 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks out of the year, your plasma display should last (with proper care and handling on your part) for over 28 years. That's a loooong time to have a set. I've personally never kept a tv for more than 10 years at the most before it crapped out. That's one of the selling points for plasma, apparently...the outstanding lifespan. We've now had our PDP5171 for over 3 months and we're still as stunned by the picture quality as we were the day we brought it home. Also, there've been absolutely no problems whatsoever. I've heard some people talk of dead spots but none on our set. We didn't get the service plan because everything I've read about these sets tells me that problems with Pioneer are few and far between and common sense tells me that if there are manufacturing problems, they will show up within the 1 year standard warranty period...probably within the first few weeks or months. I still highly recommend this set. We've gone back to see other sets and the only thing we'd change at this point is we'd go for the 60" instead of the 50"!
