Plasma Pleasure

Started Dec 4, 2006

Strengths: Great picture, simple classic style fits anywhere, auto power save feature and screensaver saves money and life of screen. Menus logically seperated and easy to navigate with remote.

Weaknesses: Manual shows how to change settings but no explanations about choices. Std terminal boards req. 4 BNC to RCA adaptors to funtion with std cables. Need DVI terminal board to get most out set using MCE

No speakers, no tuner, no cable card are all good things if you want a simple and elegant display to hang on a wall with minimal cables hanging from it. I looked at all the different types of HD displays but find Plasma the most like my good old CRT and the easiest to watch. I am happy with the display and I haven't even seen an HD picture on it yet. Still waiting for my adaptors to arrive. Bought mine at Newegg but you should consider Visual Apex because they include the adaptors, have the dvi terminal boards in stock, and have knowledgeable reps. I only saved $50. If you are not sure whether to get the consumer version or this one, remember you can get both a $100 rebate and a 5 year extended warranty offered by Panasonic on the pro series models.

Received my DVI terminal board and installed it easily. Hooked up to an upconverting Samsung DVD player using an inexpensive HDMI cable and an adaptor to DVI. Put in a disc and WOW! Stunning color and detail and no screen door or motion artifacts. Totally consumed by beautiful picture viewed from any angle without any change in brightness or clarity. Only one problem, the picture did not fill the entire screen. Thought this was due to the fact the native resolution matches computer screen dimension and was connected through DVI, but after making it through the entire manual found the adjustment needed to eliminated the narrow fuzzy flickering rainbow border. Noticed when no signal to input, display appearred dark grey instead of matching black border so I bumped a couple of settings and the screen matched the border and the blacks in the animated DVD became inky dark, patent leather glossy, but without obliterating detail. I waited a long time before making a decision. Going to retail stores never really did it for me as far as picture quality because I could tell the sets just weren't set up correctly. I relied heavily on professional and user reviews and this time I couldn't be happier. Initially I passed on the 50 inch Plasma as being to small a screen and was focusing on a larger rear projection LCOS or even a projector. I have a fairly large room and mostly like to watch movies. My kids however prefer TV shows and actually said they didn't want a big set. Finally after always finding myself gravitating to the Plasmas I concluded that if it turned out to be to small I would just move it to my bedroom wall and in a year or so when the next generation of 1080p sets come out I could get a bigger better set for about the same as I paid for this. I have only watched a few movies so far, and am so pleased with the picture quality that I am enjoying them thoroughly. I will check back in a month or so and let you know if my opinion changes at all.

Forgot to mention that a DVI to DVI cable is included with the terminal board but it isn't black.

Absolutely agree 100%. I picked up the HDMI module and directed it to the Comcast Motorola DVR HDMI. The picture is breathtaking. Without question this was the best buy for 2006! Don't buy a monitor with speakers/tuner/stand if you do not need those items. HD stations are absolutely perfect. You WILL love this monitor!
