Defective TV, poor customer service

Strengths: Seemed like good value.
Weaknesses: TV is defective. Customer service is worse in my opinion.
I recently purchased one of these TVs on-line and it was defective out of the box -- with an 18 inch band of white screen-door effect horizontally across the center of the screen. I understand that those things can happen, but I don't understand how a major company like Sharp can have such poor customer service. It is now 2 weeks later and counting, and Sharp has still not fixed the problem. After first telling me they would just refund my money because they did not have a replacement unit, they now tell they will not issue a refund since I purchased the TV on-line. I am now on an indefinite waiting list for a replacement. So, it will continue to be my problem for the foreseeable future. Overall, this has been the worst consumer electronics experience I can recall. Despite the good reviews on this and other products, I personally don't intend to purchase Sharp products again. ** To update this review, Sharp has a replacement TV delivered to my house, about three weeks after my original problem.
