I generally rely pretty heavily on reviews before I buy so I will try to be thorough for your benefit.
The good news:
You get a built in HD tuner. Even though these are pretty much standard these days, there are still many units that do not have them. I am very pleased with the display of standard definition content. I have plain-Jane, basic, analog cable. The set handles this just about as well as anyone could hope.
On this basic cable, I ran the digital and analog channel finder. I don't know how or why, but it found all of my local HD channels on the cable line, as well as TNT and Discover HD (which are OMG amazing).
But you're not buying this for the SD content, are you?
The high def from the tuner is beautiful. I have a few other sets that also do HD so it's not just a newb seeing HD for the first time. Some of the colors look a little flat, but I'm sure that once I get my copy of Digital Video Essentials that will clear right up.
I also use this display for my gaming (Xbox 360). I pump the signal in via component and could not be any happier with the picture. The dashboard of the system looks a little washed out, but the games are absolutely gorgeous. Halo 2, Lego Star Wars II, and Gears of War never looked so good.
DVD playback (via component, 480p, no up-converting) definitely show some pixelation. Please bear in mind that I have this in my bedroom and sit no further than 6 feet away, so you may not have this problem in your home.
I have not tried an upconverting player yet, but perhaps soon. Will be trying HD-DVD's on there this weekend some time and will report back.
I have already performed a firmware upgrade even though I didn't notice any issues. I was hoping it may help the humming backlight or the blue LED on the front. There is no cable supplied, but all you need is an A-to-B USB cable and their software from the website. It is a bit cryptic to use. Not sure I would recommend it for an exteme PC novice.
The Bad news:
When you power on the unit, it takes about 10 seconds before anything comes on the screen. Then you get a washed out olevia logo for a few seconds before you get any video. This is a minor inconvenience.
When you set the backlight for a "Dark" or "Medium" room you can hear it buzzing. I generally hear this at night when I turn the volume down to go to sleep. It will disappear under normal audio, but may bother some people.
The blue LED on the front is bright as all getout. I have actually blocked the LED with a stuffed penguin because it would light up the opposite corner of my room and actually keep me up at night. Nothing a little electrical tape can't fix!
The manual doesn't come in paper format! You must print it out from the enclosed CD that comes in the package. That is just silly.
Some strange things can happen with the tuner. I cannot tune directly to certain stations by punching them in on the remote (the higher numbered digital stations). Also, if you turn off the tv on an HD channel, it seems to turn back on at channel 2 no matter what. Could just be me, but this has happened several times.
The sound has "popped" a few times unexpectedly. Not a problem in the audio signal as I was watching the same program as someone else down the hall who didn't get the "pop". Not sure what that is all about. I do have the unit hooked up to a Monster unit with Cleanpower so I doubt it was an uneven power input.
Overall, I would recommend this tv. You get an excellent feature set with a very low price tag. I'm not sure that I would make this set the centerpiece in a home theater, but I love it for gaming and HDTV. Especially since you can find them for around $800 or so now, what are you waiting for?

This TV has everything any gamer can actually need. 2 component outputs and an HDMI input. For your Wii, Xbox 360 and if you bought it PS3. Picture is amazing and watching movies at 480p is ever better. I dont think i will upgrade to a HD-DVD player because DVD's work fine for me. The Sound is amazing as well heck it may not have a built in Surround system but it sounds pretty good to me.
I have been hessitating to buy an LCD TV because I couldnt afford it but then I found this one and bought it the minute I saw it. At a great price this is a great TV. If youre a gamer or if you want to upgrade to an LCD TV buy this TV. Trust me you wont regret it.

Had a 32 in my budget but found the 37 on an on-line deal site for $725 total delivered from Fry's. Thought it was too good to be true especially when I received the backorder email shortly after ordering(Dec 2006). I was shocked when it arrived in a new unopened box in Jan 07. Had to wait a month to get the HD receiver from Time Warner but once it was all hooked up the picture quality & detail blew me away. I prefer to watch HD Sports programming on the Olevia instead of attending the event in person.
Would definitely buy an Olevia again & Fry's did right by me as well!

The Olevia 537H is a great buy. You get a lot of bang for your buck here with superb picture quality, lots of a/v inputs, and the best of all - a built in clear QAM tuner for receiving HDTV signals from your cable without a cable box. As others have mentioned, it takes longer than normal for the tv to actually turn on (about 10 seconds), but once it's on, you won't want to turn it off. The blue LED light that stays on when the TV is off is a bit annoying, but a piece of black electrical tape can easily cover it up. Firmware on the TV is also upgradeable via USB. Overall, two thumbs up!

TopEveryone keeps complaining about the bright blue light that remains on when the power is off. I just went to the Menu and TURNED IT OFF. VERY very simple to do so I have no idea why so many people complain about it before they look into it. I did it in about 10 seconds in the menu without the manual. The BLUE LIGHT IS A EASY EASY FIX.
Strengths: Excellent Picture Quality. HD is beuatiful and Standard TV is also excellent. I've read, researched, and seen for myself and this TV is by far the best deal on the net! I've been using it for 1 month

I own a 50" Sony rear projection LCD too. The olevia is in my bedroom. I like the olevia better! The picture is brighter, colorful, and just oh so sweet. My sony rocks too but this tv is tight!
If your picture flickers a bit at the top on some channels, you can adjust the screen in the menu to move up a hair and it goes away. I think it was my cable. Worked beautifully!

TopStrengths: This TV is a great buy for the money! Very happy with picture quality and screen size (not too big and not too small).
Weakness: The shortfalls are not too bad. The sound has gone out a few times (I use a separate sound system so not a big deal)and there is no universal remote to use with this TV.
This TV is a good buy - the 37" is not too small! It survived the trip from California with only a small hole poked in the container - was packaged well. Out of the box, it was nothing to hook up to the satellite cable and play around with the remote until I got the program signal. The LCD picture is a great change from the old pixel TV's - I won't go back! After a few weeks a sound problem developed where a high pitched humm or buzz would come through for a few seconds and then go away (happened once or twice a day) when sound was played through the TV. The warranty will get it taken care of, but as for now, my external sound system makes this a great TV experience. I would love to have just one remote to run everything, but will have to settle for two as a model is not made yet. The remote was not hard to get used to as the on-screen set-up prompts are a rotating sphere. It is easy to adjust the picture as to a room or lighting. Also I like the zoom and freeze frame feature. I have heard that these TV's are giving way to newer models - but with Olevia you can't go wrong.

I currently purchased this TV due to the low cost and word of mouth. Picture quality was great for SD/HD/DVD. Video games also played great with no lag. Had it running for nearly 1 month when all of a sudden it shut off by itself. Was unable to power it back on after trying all there solutions on olevia.com
Calling for warranty replacement was exhausting as I had to wait a long time for someone to actually pick up the phone. When I did actually get someone on the line, the warranty replacement process was easy. So far a week has past since faxing in the warranty papers and i am still awaiting my replacement set.
Though the TV set worked great during its 2 month run, I am worried for Olevia's quality in terms for long time. Highly recommend a warranty plan or purchase a different brand.
Update:
Received replacement and everything seems to be good. TV is new, not refurbished.

I absolutely love the picture quality of this 37" HD LCD. Both standard and high definition signals look great. The built-in QAM tuner enables you to receive unencrypted HD signals from your cable company without a separate box. Only weakness is the remote; the menu system doesn't give me all of the options I've become accustomed to on other HD TV's I own. Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

This HDTV has more than met my expectations. It looks great and the picture is great. It has very vibrant colors, and the dark colors (black) looks pretty dark to me. The TV is also very thin and light for its size.
It also has plenty of inputs and has a optical and coaxial output. I haven't tested the sound (from the coaxial output) fully on my sound system yet.
Also, I have and play the Wii and Xbox 360 on this TV, and it looks great. There isn't a drag and component output from the Xbox 360 looks great.
People have complained about the blue light when the TV is off. It isn't a big deal to me. Also, the long start-up time (~8 seconds) is also not a big deal to me. I can wait that long for the picture to come up. Also, the audio coming from the TV's speakers are good enough already. I have an HD antenna and I pick up 42 digital channels (I live in L.A. County).

if your looking for a good HDTV that won't reak the bank, this is it. I shopped all around and everything was at least 1500 or more. Found this beauty and with the rebates only cost 800. Great buy for the price.

I just bought this LCD in feb. 07 and love it. I looked around and read tons of reviews on all LCD in my price range. Now im not going to sit here and tell you its the best LCD you could possible buy. Its not and shouldnt be but i think from all i looked at in this price range it is. There were LCD up to 1500.00 that dont even look this good. I hooked mine up to a nice DVD player through componant cables and even at 480p it looks awesome. Also i just wanted to mention that i had read alot about how difficult the OSM (on screen menu) is to learn. Come on, if your smart enough to spell you name youll be fine. Awesome picuture and options for an even better price. I got mine for 750.00. Also did i mention it was assembled in USA?

It can't be controlled by universal remotes - you have to use olevia remote which is poor for controlling anything else.
I use the HDMI input. The input sound level is ignored, basically on or off, so you have to use the Olevia remote for that.
The menu system is horrible and I can't change the brightness for a dark room.
I didn't have any luck finding or downloading a firmware update on my first attempt. Hopefully some of these problems can be fixed with an update.

This is my second Olevia TV and I have to say that I'm 100% satisfied. I won't repeat what has been said in prior reviews except to say that no other LCD brand offers the quality, picture, and overall value of the Olevia series of LCDs. There may be a few LCDs that may be slightly better than Olevia but they will cost you 2 - 3 times the price of the Olevia.

I got this TV after reading some reviews in different websites. It seems it balances performance and price very well and there is no major negative review for this TV. After order it online, I got this TV three days later. After having this TV for several days, I have the following conclusion:
Positive:
1. This LCD looks very nice when you hook it with a computer, even only uses the DSub interface. My dell desktop only has DSub 15 pin output, and do not have DVI, so I hook it with the TV use DSub interface. After set the resolution to 1360*768, it gives me amazing display, actually much better than I expected.
2. The TV has very good performance on 720p HDTV signal, I'd like to see it is very close to high end ones like those from samsung and sharp.
3. The QAM tuner is powerful to receive the HDTV signal directly from the comcast basic cable. This will save a few bucks for those who do not want to upgrade the basic cable.
4. The "reset all setting to initial setting by interface" works perfect for me. At beginning I try to adjust contrast, brightness manually, but the overall performance is not good. After I use this feature, the TV automatically adjustment the parameters for me, and it is much better than manually tuning a lot of parameters.
5. I like the universal remote controller, it make your desk clean. Some people said the remote controller is not easy to use, but for me, the menu and button is clear and easy to access.
Negative:
1. The TV does not have good performance on 1080i HDTV signal, maybe it has to downgrade to 720p to display due to the limitation of the resolution. I think after several years, when 1080i / 1080p signal is popular, I have to buy another TV has 1920*1080 resolutions. For those who want to use this TV for many years, this is not a good option.
2. The speaker after the display can not be removed, and I like the ones without big speakers on the front panel.
Overall, I like this TV for what I have paid. It worth 800 dollars.

Good price ($800) good picture. I had to take the 1st tv back as it worked for awhile, but then the remote wouldn't work. The 2nd set worked fine. My main problem is the design of the split screen/PIP. If the tuner is the main source then then other source can only be the hdmi input. Don't know why they designed it this way. Since I don't have an HDMI input this means the split screen is useless. I can't watch a dvd while having the ball game on the split screen or the PIP ( picture in picture)
I found the manual not to be up to date to explain the menu choices. I called the 800 number several times and was able to get help within 5 minutes or so. Their basic solution to any problem is to replace the tv. Doesn't seem to be any service available. The sound level at the lowest volume is probably too loud for a bedroom.

When looking for a good, solid LCD TV, there were numerous options out there. On that stood out was the Synatex Olevia 537H.
Syntax has made a name for itself in the lower-priced LCD TV market with good picture quality to match. They have numerous model lines, though the 5-series stands out with an option for an on-site warranty, instead of a ship-and-replace warranty. Having a built-in QAM tuner is a nice addition at this price point, which allows for viewing of HD Cable feeds without a box. The picture quality for SD content looks great, compared to other sets. The HD content looks great, with good black range and contrast for a set in this price range. With 2 component/S-Video inputs, 1 HDMI, 2 component and 1 VGA input, it has quite a number of input options. It's firmware upgrade with USB, though it's not an easy process due to a very complicated program.
When the set is off, there's a bright blue LED on the front of it. As this TV is in a downstairs area, this isn't an issue. Powering up takes about 15 seconds, which is slow compared to some sets. Some might want a DVI port in place of the VGA port, though it's a minor issue.
Overall, it's a great TV set at a great price. Well worth looking at for those looking at a 37" LCD TV.

The 537H has the best picture of any 37" LCD bar none, even among TV's costing many times more! At times you'll swear the picture is 3 dimensional. On the bad side the remote has some quarky features, like for example the 'Audio' button. The blue LED is really not that big a deal, as many electronics manufactures are using them these days. Having the owners manual on a CD was much more of an annoyance because everytime you wanted to look something up, you had to boot up your computer. All things being equal though this is one of the best values in a HDTV that there is on the market!

Had this set for a month now, and for the price paid it just can't be beat. Excellent picture from my progressive scan DVD player, and I get HD stations directly from my cable without a box (YMMV depending on your cable service). Have not noticed the hum mentioned by other reviewers.

TV was defective out of box. Picture was "snowy" and sound was muffled. Olevia did send a replacement unit. Replacement unit was defective. Sound worked but no picture. A lot of positive reviews about Olevia's service support. The original purcase was mid November '06, it is now January '07 and I still do not have a working TV. MWAVE support is horrible as well as Olevia's.

It appears this tv is so bad that target isnt selling them anymore. BEWARE pay a little more and buy namebrand.I haven't priced getting it repaired.I can only imagine its going to be a problem. Stay away from this brand.

If I turn the bass up past halfway, I get a white noise echo which when I called Olevia they claimed was on account of the "cheap" speakers being unable to handle the input. If you are looking for a tv with good sound, this is not it. Plus, as mentioned in other reviews, once in a while the tv lets out a loud static pop that startles the heck out of you and the sound will not come back on until you turn the tv power off and back on.

Weakness: Imagine trying to configure a complex electronic unit without the remote.....
I was like a little kid with a new toy when this arrived and couldn't wait to set it up. It was a bit of a drag that the instructions were only on the CD, but what the heck, how difficult could it be? I hooked it up to the DirectTV, the stereo and everything else, fired it up and Wow! What a picture. Granted, it was only a huge image of the Olevia logo, but it screamed BIG TIME. Then, the fun began. I pointed the remote, it flickered but nothing happened. I read the manual, followed the instructions - 8 TIMES!! And nothing happened. I called customer service and spoke with a nice lady who walked me through all of the procedures that the manual walked me through - to no avail. We agreed that I had a faulty remote. She told me it would take 4 to 6 weeks for me to get a remote!! That was on November 14th!! I am still waiting for that remote to arrive. I have called and even e-mailed the VP of Marketing (It's not easy getting an e-mail address of anyone at Syntax-Brillian) but she was on holiday vacation. In late December I spoke with a customer service rep who said that the record says to ship a new remote - TWICE it said this. Still nothing......3 days ago, customer service left a message at my house that they have shipped a remote. My guess is that they put it in the glove box of an intern who was driving to Florida to see his grandparents and I should get it any day now......I still can't configure this unit properly. Try as you may to use the nearly invisible buttons on the front of the set, you just can't get through all of the steps in order to get the picture right. I'm sure it is a piece of cake with a remote....at least that is what I'm hoping.
I'll bet that 99% of the customers have a good experience, but unfortunately, I am in that stinking 1%

With the price of 1080i in this size range being close to a grand, this one's a good deal at sub-$800. What's more amazing was that Target had a Black Friday sale on this TV for $549. You don't think I was absolutely tickled getting it at that price? Wow!

Weakness: 1)Cable remote control cannot be programmed to control the TV. 2) Bright blue light on TV goes "on" to indicate TV is "off". How wierd. 3) Takes too long for TV to turn on. 4) Directions stink.
Cable remote control cannot be programmed to control the TV because Olevia customer service told me, "Olevia TV is too new and does not have codes yet".So I have to use the Olevia TV remote to control volume and cable box remote to change channel.
The first direction is program to "HOME". I had to click enter 10 times to get this command to register.
Several directions are WRONG. For example:The CD manual says to click "right arrow" to choose an option but that is wrong . You must click "enter" to choose an option.
You must click "source" then click "tuner", then click "menu". The directions say to perform in the opposite order which does not work.
The picture and sound is ok, but I am so aggravated it took me 3 hours to set up this TV when it should have taken only 10 minutes.

I purchased this TV a few months ago. So far, I have been very pleased with it. The TV does an admirable job at upconverting SD content and looks great on any HD material. The start-up time on the TV is long, but you can cut several seconds off if you hit the volume +/- when the "olevia" screen appears. Its really a minor inconvenience.
The picture quality in light scenes is excellent. Color reproduction is the best I've seen at this price point. I prefer the picture on the 537H to many TV's at twice the price. Dark scenes are another story though. In movies like Narnia (which has several dark scenes,) nearly all the detail of the image is lost....becoming a black hole. This isn't totally unexpected in a TV at this price point, but something you will have to expect.
When I was using a calibration disc to setup the TV, it was readily apparent that the adjustments for color, tint, sharpness, ect. were very course. It was difficult to get a fine adjustment on the TV because the "steps" between each adjustment were huge. I was able to achieve a good looking picture, but was not able to get it calibrated spot-on.
Connectivity on the TV is good, but having only one HDMI input is a bit of a problem. With more devices moving to HDMI, a TV needs to have at least 2. An alternative would be to purchase a receiver with HDMI switching capability.
Audio is the 537H's weakest point. The speakers are not up to par with the rest of the TV. I also get the intermittent popping sound, and it happens on every input. I would strongly recommend using external speakers with this TV. The TV does have a volume controlled headphone jack, which is nice.
Overall, I am pleased with the TV. It is not perfect, but for the money its faults are acceptable. Compared to other sub-$800 37" LCDs, this is going to be your best bet.

TopStrengths: ry good price and value and overall quality is great for the price paid. Picture quality is very good, even better on analog and low def signals than I expected.
Weakness: Not so sure about factory quality inpection before shipping product. The sound had some "popping" issues then went out after a week. However Olevia does offer on site warranty service so they shipped me a replacement board and had technician come fix
Due to quality problem I encountered, even though it was resolved, I would highly recommend forking out bucks for extended warranty, which for LCD display TV this size is probably something you were considering anyhow. Good news is that the price of these warranties is usually based upon purchase price and since this is an inexpensive unit for what you get, you save on the extended warranty as well. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this TV and the price sure does sooth some quality irritations.

Bought this TV in Nov. 06. Heard good things from a friend and read many positive reviews. Paid about $300 to $400 less than most 37" sets. Picture is beautiful. I have a Philips home theatre hooked to it so sound is improved. I love it and highly recommend !!!

Can't say much more other then this is a great TV at a great price. Tons of connections to add pretty much anything you want for a signal feed. The remote is very easy to use and laid out great. I plan on buying a second identical one in a month or so.

Bought this internet mail order. The picture is great, especially using the ATSC tuner. One bad flaw ... (and this might only be particular to my cable box) when I use my cable box, I get a white "static" line across the top of the screen. This is at random. Tech support said something about a 37th (39th) line. This is supposedly the closed caption line which is broadcast by the major networks. They said they don't overscan and there is no way to get rid of this--beyond their control. Well you can adjust and move the picture up vertically to erase this line, however the setting does not stick. So when you power cycle the tv, the line comes back. I don't see this line using the antenna.
The remote is clunky, but worse than that ... it doesn't follow the standard remote control guidelines, hence I cannot find any setting on my programmable cable box controller that will turn the TV on and off. So I have to live with 2 remotes or get a "soft programmable learning" remote control.
So the pic is great ... better than some of the low-cost LCD tvs in the same price range. But they sure could do a better job at programming the firmware on the TV and their tech support is poor. They don't listen to you and are somewhat rude in talking to you.

Excellent Buy ...and the blue light people talk...
Strengths: Great picture, excellent price, good sound
Weakness: One HDMI input, PIP
The TV is excellent. Very good picture and surprisingly good sound. It does have a subwoofer output. This is nice if you choose to stick with the TV speaker, just hook up a powered woofer to it and you will have very nice sound. The menu take a few minutes to get the hang of, but once you get it, it is fairly simply and easy to use. The remote is fine, it could be nicer but you could also be paying a lot more for it too. The ability to use the TV as a computer screen is also very nice. OVERALL EXCELLENT BUY.

THE BLUE LIGHT...there is a LED blue light that remains on when you turn it off, I actually like it. BUT if you don't like it all you have to do is go to the menu and TURN IT OFF...not rocket science...takes 10 seconds to do and no tape needed HA.

THE BAD...there is only one HDMI input. Also the area containing all the inputs is some what crowded so try to do it once and only once. The PIP is not what you would think of, you can NOT watch two TV channels at once. Only two different inputs, such as your computer screen and cable TV. It should be noted also that there is a delay in turning the TV on, about 6-10 seconds. This may annoy some, but I have found that I am able to wait 10 seconds to watch TV without any difficulty.
