Absolutely Stunning

Strengths:

3 HDMI, 15000:1 Contrast Ratio, sleek design, Anti-Glare, Samsung Quality

Posted May 24, 2007 - This is the brightest picture avaliable in the market today. With a contrast ratio of 15000:1 this Plasma really "Pops". I spent months researching TV's and found that this one blows away the competition. I thought long and hard about the Panasonic but when compared side-by-side this picture just stuck out. The speakers are poor but if you are throwing down this kind of money then you should have a surround sound speaker system set up. I heard complaints that the stand tilts a little and well....it does. I purchased @ Vann's and they are definetly the way to go. Good customer service and quick shipping. Buyer beware when it comes to those cheap online super stores......you will end up paying for it in the end. All in all I would give this TV two thumbs up.

Amazing Plasma

Strengths:

Beautiful image!

Weaknesses:

No variable sound output, IR is blocked by a center speaker at the bottom front, anti-reflective doesn't do much.

Posted Jul 26, 2007 - This Samsung has an amazing image. Menu works well, setup was easy, image is amazing. Weakness are few, but there are a few. There is no variable sound output so you can't use the TV remote to adjust stereo sound (universal remote would solve, however). Anti-reflective coating on screen doesn't do much. Also, placing a center speaker at the bottom front of the TV blocks the IR port so the TV channel cannot be changed (top is too narrow to place a larger center speaker). Otherwise, a great TV!

Plasma picture is amazing with true HD programming!

Strengths:

Colors!, better viewing angles, fast response/ no ghosting, famous plasma 3-d "window effect", more even and realistic lighting effects than LCD backlight, best picture

Weaknesses:

can burn-in an image if left with static image on for a few days. Not quite as bright as LCD flourescent backlight.

Posted Mar 26, 2008 - Probably the only reason to go with LCD is if you have an exceptionally bright room, or play video games all the time where there is a static frame or image on the screen all the time. On the other hand, the faster response times of plasma makes them better for games that reqire fast action. LCD's are brighter because they have one (usually flourescent) light lighting up the whole screen. That is a disadvantage though because the lighting is less even and it tends to make the screen look flat and pictures lose 3-d quality. Also, the lighter blacks on LCD's and the changing color and image quality at different angles makes the pictures less real to the eye and they lose the famous plasma 3-d "window effect". This is usually more difficult to see with the type of images they play in stores, but really noticeable with true HD programming. Plasma wins hands-down for image quality. With plasma, you feel like you are looking out a window. Looks real.

Excellent TV at a great price!

Strengths:

* Beautiful HD Picture * Deep black levels * Lots of built-in features to prevent burn-in

Weaknesses:

* Image retention is quite common, but always seems to disappear * Refresh rate seems a little slow and is noticeable when playing video games or watching movies with explosions

Posted Jan 27, 2008 - This is my first HDTV, and to be honest, I was totally blown away by the picture quality. My father loved the picture as well, so much that he went and purchased the same TV the next weekend. You will not be disappointed with this TV. Highly Recommended!

Great for HD but....

Posted Jan 26, 2008 - OK my fellow geeks....I am a IT Director for a major casino so I am quite familiar with technology these days. Anyway, I have to say that overall I am impressed with the HPT5064 running HD channels on DirecTV. I want to touch on something that I NEVER see mentioned in any reviews that is quite important. The HPT5064 offers very vivid and sharp pictures in HD like what I expected but, like with most HD screens I've seen, the picture is only as good as the signal its receiving. If your moving to HD then- based on cost and other comparison, the HPT5064 is super choice but, if your staying with traditional standard satellite or cable TV I would not recommend this set or any other HD screen. The screens are way ahead of these standard digital signals and it actually makes the pictures look a little worst that a non-HD set. Trust me...I manage over 200 HD screens of all makes and models and they all do this with standard definition DirecTV/ Dish signals. Its embarrassing to see a $300 standard definition set display a clearer standard definition picture than a $3000 LCD. Keep this in mind my friends otherwise you will be disappointed with your new HD screens. CNN on DirecTV/ Dish is the best example where you can usually see the flaws im talking about. Also, don't expect great sound out of this set. Expect to run it through a amp with speakers for good sound. Again, great HD set with HD signal!!

Good plasma value

Strengths:

Posted Sep 18, 2007 - Samsung is known better for its LCD TV's, but the plasmas are worth seeing. Overall, I chose this unit for several reasons- the price for quality (significantly lower than comparable LCDs), the external appearance (very sleek- looks fantastic as a wall-mount), and the overall picture quality. I have not been disappointed. I was concerned because several reviewers of similar samsung plasmas complained of a loud and persistent buzzing noise. Needless to say, when purchasing over the internet rather than B&M store, this makes exchanges worrisome. However, this unit is very quiet and I have been happy with the performance. It does generate some heat, but not enough to notice unless you're inches from it. It performs spectacularly on HD TV signals and expectedly average on SD TV. I was pleasantly surprised when I paired it with a Samsung up-converting basic DVD player - while the images are not HD, they are very good. I'm in no hurry to buy HD or bluray. My only complaint is that after several months, I still have ghosting (when the screen is dark after a bright image, the outlines of the bright image remains for a short while). This is mostly an issue when watching TV, as commercials come on. Also, I have noticed in some movies that when there is a scene with a uniform color with some gradation, one sees gradation lines rather than a smooth transition - for instance, a sky with one edge darker will have a more paint-by-numbers appearance than a totally true graduation. Nevertheless, these complaints are relatively minor and I would definitely purchase this unit again. I bought from Vanns based on other reviews (and official Samsung supplier) and was happy with the service.

Samsung HP-T5064

Strengths:

Sharp picture, great whites, blacks, and verything inbetween

Weaknesses:

Posted Apr 26, 2007 - I'd been looking to buy a plasma for the last year and then bingo, saw the sister model to this (the 5054) at best buy. The whites seemed more like what you see on the Samsung 32" LCDs, yet with the outstanding blacks associated with plasmas. It also seemed sharper than the other sets without having that artificial edge look. I took my daughter back to BB and told her to pick the set with the best looking picture. Took her 2 seconds (the Samsung). Before the TV arrived I was a little worried that going from a 36" Sony CRT to this wouldn't seem like the display would be much bigger. And as it turns out the height of the display is almost identical to the Sony, but you get about an extra foot of width which makes it seem much larger. Right out of the box the color looked right on. Only adjustment was to turn down the brightness. This set has a QAM tuner (not sure the 5054 does) that picks up the free HD digital channels without having to use the cox HD box. I also tried the OTA antenna and got the same free channels but no difference with picture quality. The SD channels are alright PQ wise but pale in comparison to a HD signal or the PQ from an up-converting DVD player. This set has some other features, but the main thing is the PQ and I am very satisfied.

Great 50" Plasma TV

Strengths:

Posted Jun 28, 2007 - This is my first plasma and I have to admit - this is great TV! Stunning HD picture, good SD picture, lot of picture adjustments. I spent hours and hours on-line researching Best Plasma TV's for the money and Samsung HP-T5064 came out first. It's cheaper then Panasonic TH50PX77U from on-line retailers but has better overall picture, nice black shining cabinet. I like screen burn-in features. 3 HDMI inputs also big plus - Panasonic has only 2. Unit also has USB port - Panasonic does not. PIP is also very good function, although it would be nice to have 2 tuners for PIP in order to watch 2 different programs at the same time. Overall, I recommend this TV very much, no question it is one of the best in it's class.

Posted Dec 11, 2007 - I bought a Samsung HPT5064 in mid August because i thought the picture was fantastic. Mid November it quit. I'm still waiting on the repair. Samsung customer service keeps saying they first try to repair. Have been on the phone with them several times. I think they should have replaced a unit that was only a few months old. Based on the warranty service alone, I'd recommend going with a brand other than Samsung. -Mitch Deason

Posted Sep 8, 2007 - I shopped for probably a month or more before deciding on the Samsung 5064. This set has an overall package that won me over. The picture sharpness was best in class for a 768P set, certainly the equal of any Pioneer and better than Panasonic. Colors are vibrant yet still very natural unlike about every LCD TV that I looked at. As a bonus, the picture has more adjustability through the menu than you can hope to use. Very different than Panasonic and more like Pioneer in that way. The inputs are generous as the 5064 has both VGA and USB. The USB input is primarily designed for slide shows with a flash drive. I've used it that way and it works well. You can also put background music for the slide show on the flash drive but I haven't tried that yet. For those wondering about 768P vs. 1080P, it came down to value for me. Beyond about 4 feet distance, my eyes can't tell any difference. A comparable 1080P Samsung plasma TV would have been in the range of $650 more and I couldn't justify spending the difference on something I thought I may never detect in normal viewing. There were two things gave me pause in this purchase. Firstly, a past reputation of Samsung plasmas not being as problem-free as Pioneer and Panasonic. In a couple weeks ownership, I've had nothing but praise for the quality of the build. Secondly, there have been reports of horizontally scrolling tickers not being smooth (such as stock ticker). This "judder" as it's sometimes called is present but barely noticeable. I don't feel it to be a factor at all in a purchase decision. Bottom line -- I'd buy this TV again today.

Posted Nov 24, 2007 - I was extremely impressed with the Samsung when compared side by side with other hdtv's both Plasma and LCD's. I went to my local Fry's with my brother planning on buying a 52" Mitsubishi LCD that was on sale but really loved the picture, price and overall look of this unit. I paid $1499 and a $180 for a 5 year in home warranty. I was looking to go lcd and 1080 but after reading up on different reviews I realized that it was a waste of money for me because I don't play video games and don't plan on buying a blueray any time soon. My family and I love it but we have only viewed the HD through use of a rabbit ear antenna because I haven't upgraded to an HD dish. I compared this set side by side to the higher rated Panasonic and the Samsung looked much better overall. The prices were exactly the same. I recommend this set to everyone. I have noticed Ghosting during black screens as previous reviews described and don't know why it does this or if it can be fixed. This is my only complaint.

Woderful Plasma : I love it

Strengths:

-> Great Picture -> Good Sound Quality -> Universal Remote -> USB connect to computer

Weaknesses:

PIP is not so great and intutive.

Posted Sep 9, 2007 - I was bit puzzled between Samsung and Panasonic Plasma . My local stores sales guys were recommending Panasonic but when i started comparing the features like USB port connection , Universal remote , extra HDMI ports etc Samsung sounds great. I asked by local CC guy to put both TVs next to each other same , put same channel , same light . When I started comparing Samsung was way ahead in the game . When i bring it home , it was easy to setup with Great crisp picture . I love it and recommend it for any one looking for great plasma .

Samsung HPT5064 Plasma

Strengths:

Beautiful picture, easy set-up, cabinet design is simple and elegant, more than adequate number of video hook-ups and screen adjustments controls are well thought out.

Weaknesses:

None noted so far.

Posted Aug 31, 2007 - -This TV has exceeded with my expectations in every way. Straight out of the box the picture quality was great. The menu structure for picture adjustments was easy to use and simple to manage. I probably only spent about an hour on getting the picture settings to my liking (and a lot of that was just in playing around with the features) -I really enjoyed being able to have different settings for each feed coming into TV, so that I could fine tune each type of picture. I have a my TV line, video game systems, DVD and VCR all hooked up and running smoothly with their own video settings. -The sound quality out of the audio feeds from the TV to the stereo have provided very good sound quality. -The TV design is beautiful. The TV looks great just sitting there but the design does not distract you from the picture in any way. -Overall impression - I was really nervous spending this much money on a TV for fear that it wouldn't be as good as I had hoped, that there would be a problem getting it to work right, problems getting it from an online retailer (Thanks Butterfly Photo) and any number of other paranoid thoughts that come with a big purchase. This TV takes all that away and now has me thinking about buying another one for another room in the house. (My wife even likes it!) I could not be happier with this TV and short of making a jump to a 1080p system I see no reason to buy any other comparable TV in this range. This is the TV for you bar none.

Samsung 5064 - excellent choice

Strengths:

One of the few flat panel TVs I found that had a swivel base, this makes watching from various angles in the room much never. The TV is very bright and is easily viewable in our large family room

Weaknesses:

Despite anti-reflective coating, the screen is pretty reflective - it is noticeable, but not terrible since the TV itself is so bright

Posted Aug 20, 2007 - Overall an excellent purchase. The unit itself is very glossy and, despite the anti-glare coating, picks up reflects a lot of light. This is only a problem on really bright days and is mitigated by the fact that the TV is so bright. The unit has a swivel base that has come in really handy; it makes viewing from various angles in the room a breeze.
