The Aquos D64U Series fits a large screen size into incredibly small footprints. The depth of the D64U series is reduced by 30% by changing the layout of the circuits inside the LCD panel. 5 Star Review Sharp LC52D64U

Strengths:

Excellent picture quality. Very light and thin. Good value.

Weaknesses:

Minor banding visible, but not serious. Audio quality acceptable, but not great.

Posted Jan 1, 2008 - I looked at many HD TVs for months before I chose this model. I preferred the LCD picture quality over the Plasmas. I narrowed down my choice to Sharp, Sony and Samsung LCD models based on picture quality. I decided that the hi-end Sony's had the best picture by a very small margin, but they were significantly more expensive than the Sharp. Unless the two models were side by side with the same source material, I couldn't tell the difference. The picture quality on the Sharp is amazing with a good high definition input, it almost looks 3 dimensional. There have been a lot of complaints about banding problems with the Sharps(light and dark bands on the screen). Supposedly it varies from TV to TV. Mine has some very minor banding, but you have to really look hard to see it. Most people would never notice it unless it was pointed out to them. The speaker quality is not great, but I use a home entertainment system for audio when watching movies. In summary, this Sharp has great picture quality at a very reasonable price for a 52" LCD HDTV.

4 Star Review review on tv

Strengths:

Clean sleek modern design. Superb contrast ratio (seems even better than what specks indicate) Excellent video processor and super fast response times.

Weaknesses:

No swivel option with supplied stand. Needs quite a bit of adjustments to the picture settings out of the box (especially for skin tones)Sound also weak however improves by adjusting factory setting.

Posted 1 year ago - Loved the design - Sharp packed the beautiful 52 inch panel in to a surprisingly narrow bezel for a clean all glass look - Also very lightweight and slim depth. Ideal for wall mounting. So sleek, the dimension of this TV are comparable with many 46 inch LCD's out there. Bottom mounted speakers curve slightly towards the middle making the TV smile at you :) Good picture quality, haven’t tested it in 1080P yet as I am still on the fence about blu-ray or HD DVD however HD content from my cable provider with proper HDMI connectivity was immaculate. SD quality was also OK. Response time was great, I gave up on 120hz for the neat looks of this unit and I do not regret it, 60hz on this LCD were as good as can be. Factory picture settings are all set way too high. Adjust them accordingly to your preference keeping in mind that all scenes should look as natural as possible. You should be able to handle this yourself and or you can always pick up a in expensive HD calibration DVD for help. Sound is basic and I highly recommend turning on the Bass enhancer and surround feature in the settings. Now for the moment you've been waiting for...without further a-due...preceding the drum rolls... I have not seen any banding on my LCD. It appears as though Sharp may have actually rectified this notorious banding issue. Rest assured that I will update this review if I do see any vertical and or horizontal banding. Overall a very good TV. Aquos branded with all the bells and whistles including 1080p and all the connectivity you can ask for. Almost near future proof only lacking 120hz refresh rate which I found not to be necessary at all with this unit.

5 Star Review Large screen in a small size! No serious complaints

Strengths:

TV dimensions & weight; picture quality, black levels, and viewing angles are excellent; speakers are surprisingly good; number and location of inputs; menu options are simple and straightforward.

Weaknesses:

Remote and manual are not the greatest, but aren't awful; no picture-in-picture which may be expected at this size and price point.

Posted Nov 6, 2007 - The Sharp AQUOS line has been recently upgraded to these models which supposedly do not have the "banding" issues that past AQUOS screens had. These TVs have some of the smallest form factors for the screen size; even the relatively powerful and adequate speakers are "tucked under" the screen. The stand is very strong and stable. The TV/stand assembly is very simple....8 allen screws for which Sharp has included the wrench. The manual does not really explain some of the advanced video controls well enough for a novice to learn. The descriptions still leave room for a lot of head scratching. Thankfully, most users will not need to touch these advanced settings at all. The remote is your typical multi-device remote but is nothing special. The internal packaging for the 52" is very nice, but has the possibility of open easily if one of the plastic banding straps breaks. The box is not sealed and is only held closed by 2 banding straps.

5 Star Review New Sharp 52D54U review

Strengths:

1. Sleek body, 25% thinner compared to 82U, lighter, consumes less power.Excellent picture quality,3 HDMI (1 on the side for easier access)

Weaknesses:

No to good looking chasis. Unknown banding problem (I haven;t seen it) Price, if you have not purchased under sharp F&F :)

Posted Sep 15, 2007 - I purchased this TV because it was for $1800 under sharp F&F promotion. Really a good price for 52" 1080P tevelision. The picture quality is excellent, with sharp colors and good contrast. I couldn't see any difference compared to 82U with is supposed to have 120HZ frame conversion which supposed to have less motion blur on fast moving pictures. So far, its a great piece of equipment considering its 25% thinner hence ideal for wall mounting. My wife although didn't like the chassis design (silver curve frame).

5 Star Review No complaints! 52" Unbeatable quality / features at a 46" price!

Strengths:

1. NO Banding! 2. 25% lighter & 20% slimmer vs. D62U/82U 3. Deep blacks and bright colors 4. True 1080p resolution 5. 3 HDMI ports (1.3a) 6. PC Input (RGB)

Weaknesses:

1. Recessed Speaker quality mediocre 2. Not 120Hz refresh rate 3. Frame too shiny

Posted Sep 27, 2007 - This LC-52D64U is my second Sharp LCD HDTV. I bought a 52" LC-52D82U in August '07 (see my PriceGrabber review on that model) but decided to buy this one for my parents given my great experience with the 82U and unbeatable special promotion price from Sharp Direct! I have extensively explored this TV for 4 days at my parent's house. In comparison with the 52D82U model, this TV is much lighter (20%) and slimmer (25%) - I could not believe how much set-up space it saved vs. my 82U! I could lift this TV alone if I wanted to. Set-up took only 15 minutes and the VERY first thing I did of course was to check banding - and there was NONE! The features offered was also ideal: It had 3 HDMI ports with the latest ver. 1.3a standard and also had that PC Input I had really wanted (I was able to show how easy it is to hook it up with a laptop to my father), along with 2 component outputs. With 5 HD grade inputs you'll never "run out" of ports to connect your A/V equipment! It also is true 1080p in resolution and showed awesome deep blacks and vibrant colors (with Sharp's new ASV technology). Remote was fairly easy to use. I watched DVD's and HD broadcasts on this TV and picture simply is AMAZING! The built-in QAM HD tuner picked up 55 digital & HD channels even when my father's Comcast subscription was bare Analog Basic - think about how much cable bill he's saving! Standard Def picture quality was slightly better vs. the 82U and about on-par with the high-end Sony KDL-52XBR4 model. Only negatives about this TV is that it does not come with 120Hz refresh rate but with 60Hz, but then, I learned that 120Hz "refresh" rate is NOT "120Hz processing" so even the experts cannot tell any noticeable difference. The recessed speakers are gray (as opposed to black on the frame), somewhat shallow and offers mediocre sound quality (15W) which shows no improvement from their 82U. Overall, I had no complaints about this TV. I even tried to convince my father to swap it with my D82U but even he's too impressed to give it up! (and he's not a techie at all) I would highly recommend this TV to anyone looking for a flat panel 52" HDTV!

4 Star Review AQUOS LC52D64U 52

Strengths:

1) Deep blacks and vivid colors 2) 3 HDMI 1.3a inputs - two in the back and one side input for easy access 3) Slim design - weighs only 63 lbs without the stand

Weaknesses:

1) Uneven backlight - no banding but the backlight produces uneven colors in the corners. 2) Remote - not very user friendly

Posted Sep 16, 2007 - This is my first LCD HDTV. I compared the Sharp, Samsung, Sony LCDs before going with the Sharp. For the price, this LCD cannot be beat. The 64U is much improved over the 62U. Compared to the 62U, blacks are deeper and colors are richer. I have no banding which was very common on the 62U/72U/82U/92U models. The side inputs are great. Can't imagine fiddling around in the back panel trying to hook up devices. Wish the speakers were not grey.

3 Star Review Not Bad but Not for me

Strengths:

Super cool design - Looks very stylish Great looking Blacks Very Slim - small footprint

Weaknesses:

Banding :( Booo

Posted Dec 13, 2007 - I bought this TV through Sharp F&F deal that ran a couple of months ago. As soon as I received the TV I put in the calibration disc that you can download from tvblink.com and tested it for banding/clouding and other artefacts. My tv displayed severe banding. Sharp customer service has been very helpful (probably the best customer service out there). THey asked me to take some pictures of the issue and email it to them. A week later I got a confirmation that the TV would be replaced. Couple of weeks later when my replacement TV showed up, it had the same banding issue that my first one displayed ! I contacted sharp again and after 2-3 weeks, they agreed to refund the whole amount and I was able to exchange the TV. For those of you who don't know what banding is, check youtube.com (search term: Sharp banding) The TV is really good except for banding. Till such a time sharp doesn't fix the banding issue I don't think sharp will get back to being #1. Finally went ahead and got myself a Sony 52XBR4 (cost me twice as much, but well worth every $ you spend). My advice, if you are constrained on budget, take a look at this TV but buy it from a retailer who has flexible return policy.

5 Star Review Best 52" LCD in the market

Strengths:

3 HDMI inputs and very slim. Nice piano black finish.

Weaknesses:

No picture-in-picture.

Posted Oct 23, 2007 - Just got mine about 3 weeks. This is my first HD LCD TV and I love it. I bought it because it is very slim compared to the other models. It has 3 HDMI input which is a big plus. I connect by HTPC to this TV using a DVI to HDMI cable. I read about the banding problem with Sharp but I did not see it with this particular model. I would definitely recommend this LCD TV.

4 Star Review Sharp 52" d64u

Strengths:

SIZE!! 1080P and multiple inputs. Picture quality in HD is amazing. Many HD input options and very good picture control options. Good quality for the cost.

Weaknesses:

None I can think on now. The picture in SD is ok, but the size of the screen magnifies every flaw. Also the speakers are kind of 'tinny' Lack of media Card reader.

Posted Sep 18, 2007 - Overall, I found this TV to be a good value. I upgraded from a 40" Samsung that was a little small for the room it was in. Great picture Clarity and AMAZING HD picture! I would like to see the inclusion of a media card reader to have slideshows.

5 Star Review Awesome 52" Full HD, Fab pictures

Strengths:

1. Extremely slim design 2. Quick setup. Learning local digital channels was a breeze 3. Great 720i/p, 1080i local broadcast pictures 4. plenty of i/p, o/p ports

Weaknesses:

1. outside frame could have been more stylish/less glossy 2. too many "view mode" options - dot by dot, stretch, super stretch, wide, zoom, normal & no onscreen help 3. Too long to start on poweron

Posted Dec 2, 2007 - Picked up this unit on the 2007 black Friday deal at CC when I didn't get the 46" unit. So far things have been going so good that I decided to keep the unit and am about to get it mounted on the wall. Setting up was a breeze - learning channels from air (via existing room top antenna), connections to component/RCA inputs from Rcvr, and other A/V devices/identifying sources. Built in speaker is ok, could have had more Watts. Video quality is extremely good. As mentioned earlier, takes too long to turn on display at power-on and flipping channels seems slow. I don't see any of the banding claims as mentioned in various other reviews of the sharp products - I have seen 5 HD movies in the last 2 weeks & various broadcast (via air) and cable channels. Remote could have been done better with a menu choice for selecting channels - Fav channels is a little difficult to use VESA compliant, so the mounting brackets I picked up from telehook seems to do the trick for wall mounting. Unit is about 80 lbs and waiting for another pair of hands to put it on the wall

5 Star Review Best value - great quality! Super size!

Strengths:

Sleek design, sharp blacks, hdmi 1.3 inputs, no banding issues (so far!)

Weaknesses:

Standard definition picture quality is subpar, not 120mhz

Posted Sep 30, 2007 - I got in on the Sharp F&F deal for this tv. The price was unbeatable! Being my first HDTV, I am blown away by the HD picture quality and the overall design and features of this TV. Also, 52" looks soooo much bigger in the living room than it does in an electronics showroom with tons of other tv's sitting side by side !!

3 Star Review WALL MOUNT. DOES ANYONE KEEP TVs ON STANDS ANYMORE?

Strengths:

OK value for the $

Weaknesses:

Wall mounting, picture quality

Posted 1 year ago - Reading all these glowing reviews, not one mention of wall mounting. Just received the Aquos, replacing a 42" plasma, have already installed a universal wall mount on a brick wall from the other TV, and guess what? It no worky. So I have to buy a Sharp AN-52AG4 wall mount as recommended in the manual. The TV only has a few holes in back to mount wall brackets, so a 'universal' bracket won't work. Another $149 or more. Not a huge deal, just a hassle and frustration. Looking at the Aquos picture now, my 42" HP plasma HDTV seems to be crisper with more vibrant colors.

1 Star Review Audio problems

Strengths:

Every thing fine except audio

Weaknesses:

Sound breaks up

Posted Mar 4, 2008 - Purchased Dec. '07 After set-up I noticed that the sound on 2 of the digital over-the-air channels I receive was breaking up to the point where I could'nt watch them. The signal strength was good,so I contacted Sharp. After 2 service calls they sent a replacement set. It was the same model and did the same thing. I contacted Sharp again and they ended up sending me an older model 92u which has been working fine. Its not the one I wanted. So if you're going to use an antenna, DON'T buy this model!

4 Star Review Very Good LCD TV

Strengths:

Excellent Desing, Deep Black Color, 3 HDMI and 2 Component, Vivid Color and Brightness

Weaknesses:

Some banding but NOT very visible, Remote Design

Posted Nov 11, 2007 - Overall this is a very good LCD TV. The picture is awesome with HD materials. Do need to make some adjustment on the video setting at first because the default setting is not so good. The deep blacks and rich colors, and the variable input is the besthing about this LCD TV. Sound speaker is okay. There is some banding but very hard to notice and much much improvement from the previous model. The remote could have been design much better; preferably without the flip cover.
