Awful TV. If you have an eye for prefection then this TV is not for you!

Started Jan 21, 2008

Strengths: Skinny design. Front panel is almost all screen. Really the nicest feature about the tv

Weaknesses: Banding, banding and more banding. saw three different TVs with Banding in all of them.

I can't stress enough how bad this TV is. When I first got the TV (CC black Friday great price) I was in awe of how great everything looked. Then during certain bright scenes I began to notice the banding. Not 1 band, 2, 3 bands, but 4. I figured I just a bad TV. Not so. Replace same thing. 52d64U demo at BB same thing. Review from Cnet.com nails it. This TV is not for the visual purest. It is really noticeable during Pans. Once you know where the bands are it hard to watch TV without seeing them every time. DON'T GET THIS TV. I know that it costs a lot less than other band of similar size, but it is still a lot of money and not worth it. Thank God the CC in my town allowed me to return it within 30 days after Xmas. Now I'm getting the Sony 52xbr4. I know that it is a lot more, but the picture is going to look amazing. (It’s still in transit. I will review when I get it)

WHAT A TOOL!

You obviously have never calibrated a TV, and hope to get a smoking picture out of the box on some manufacturers preset. AND you obviously don't have it hooked up to a surge protector with power filtration. I calibrate TVs all day long and out of every set on the market save the Sony XBR4 this is the only with insane fine tuning that makes it THE ONLY SET that gives a 3D appearance, ACTUAL DEPTH to a picture. Go buy a plasma you tool.

Very Funny! I'm impressed with your knowledge of my setup. I'm a geek you idiot! Of course I calibrated it you tool. I even busted out the filters you fanboi. What kind of geek would I be if I didn't use a high quality surge proctor with a joule rating of greater than 4000? When my 68 mother comes over to my house and says without any prompting, "What is that dark line thing that goes across the top there?" Can't calibrate that. Please give me the name of your calibration company so I can recommend it to a blind friend of mine. Only an idiot would open his mouth and speak with such conviction of things he obviously knows nothing about.

I'm sorry, I work as an A/V TECH and watch this TV every day, because I own it. If you are talking about a half inch thick black line on the top and bottom of the screen it is a display issue. the particular dimensions of the screen vs. what you are hooking it up to can resolve this. The TV has a taller than average 16x9 screen so depending on what you have plugged in, it may or may not display it in its native ratio. you may want to go into the view mode and adjust the ratio. or go buy a different TV if it bothers you so much. and if you want some calibration settings from an actual calibrating tool and not a 30 dvd then go to the first post on this thread and use the settings i posted. I would be willing to bet that when watching cable in a 1080i format that you aren't displaying all of the pixels on the screen because a true 1080i is 1024x1080 and therefore your set is having to accomodate to that signal, but if you had a Blu-Ray or true 1080p source this wouldn't be happening. Dot by Dot will be best and truest format for your picture to display but won't be an option for plenty of broadcasts. And Banding isn't some black line on top and bottom of screen, Banding is something that happens as a gradiation of white, black and color. so if you look at a sunset and you see layers of color emitting from the sun. then you have banding. or a light source with banding or layers emitting from it instead of smooth gradation. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.

Now that we have calmed down a bit, you know what you are doing, and so do I. The issue is not about the letter boxing effect. I get the noticeable horizontal line, (vertical on previous sharp) with all attached devices (DirecTV HR20 DVR, Xbox 360 & HD-DVD add-on, Sony Camcorder all HDMI connected). It's not a solid black line; it's a line that is less in intensity than the rest of the display which makes it look darker. It is quite visible and always present. I know how operate the remote control and have played with and used various display ratios, i.e. dot by dot and the rest. As you said it is a display issue.

As far as calibrating it; it came from the factory with a really good calibration to start with. Only minimal tweaks where necessary, but as stated before, that does nothing for the 4 different areas that are distinctly less intense than the rest of the display. Yes the Calibration menu on the sharp is excellent as far option tweaks but that means nothing if the display is defective to start with. My experience is with 3 different displays in the 64U family and there were display problems clearly evident in all three. If you happen to get a "good" one then yes it is a great TV, but it looks like their QA program is letting too many failures leave the factory. As Stated before. The Cnet.com review really nails. I got everything they were talking about. There is a reason this TV is at least a $1000 less than its contemparies.
