5 Star Review Great 50" Plasma

Strengths:

Color, Contrast, Inputs, Price

Weaknesses:

As with all plasmas, burn-in can be a pain but can be avoided easily, the speakers also are pretty basic

Posted 1 year ago - First Impressions: After lugging the 90 or so pound behemoth up a flight of stairs by myself, I set it on the TV stand and was up and running within a few minutes. The TV has a wealth of inputs (3 HDMI turned out to be the perfect number for me) for you to plug all your gadgets into. The remote was pretty basic, its backlit so you can see what the heck it is you’re trying to press, however it’s not universal so it won’t be able to control anything other then the TV. Cable: Currently I have Time Warner Cable, which is only capable of 1080i so I’m not getting the full use out of the TV, however it still looks great. Football games have a lot more depth, documentaries (Planet Earth for example) look absolutely mind blowing, and all your favorite prime time shows just are much easier to appreciate with the increased clarity that comes with HD. Standard Definition channels are watchable, but you’re really missing out. You run into things like artifacts from where the content has to be scaled up to fill the screen. You can’t blame the TV for a source that’s lacking, and it does a decent job scaling the content to make the best of it, but I’m actually switching from cable to an all HD lineup from Dish Network because I simply don’t care to watch shows in SD anymore, perhaps I’ve been spoiled. Gaming: I have a PS2 hooked into the component inputs, and a PS3 hooked into an HDMI input. The PS3 games look great, as they are either 720p or 1080i so while their resolution is lower then what the TV can handle, they still look exactly as they were intended to. There were no issues of ghosting/motion blur which had me slightly concerned when I bought the TV. The PS2 games still look decent, however because a lot of them are formatted for standard definition television, there will be some blockiness/artifacts where the TV has to scale the content. Progressive scan games certainly look better, but this TV was made for HD content. Using as a monitor: On another one of the HDMI inputs (thank God there are three), I have my computer hooked in. I was slightly curious how the screen would look, as I have a laptop with a 17 inch screen at a resolution of 1680 X 1050, and the A550 is a 50 inch with a resolution of 1920 X 1080. Well it turns out the resolution on my laptop was overkill, and the TV once again looks great. I’ve played a few games on it (BF2 and Team Fortress) and they take advantage of the real estate and really immerse you into the game when they’re played on such a large screen. More features: The TV has some screen burn protection features, where it will shift the pixels every 1-4 minutes depending on your set, it has energy saving settings, and a multitude of color adjustments. It also has some sound adjustments, however you’ll find that if you were looking for a TV that has great speakers, this isn’t it. They are perfectly fine for the casual tv/movie watcher, but if you consider yourself some sort of audiophile you will more then likely complain about the built in speakers, even though you more then likely have your own system already. Final Word: It's a great TV, I shopped around for almost a year while I was stationed overseas and got a good vibe from this model. The price is aggressive for a brand name 50 inch, I bought mine from sears for 1600 (I didn't mind paying 100 or so extra to have it right then instead of letting the post office screw it up). It was definitely worth every penny I spent.

5 Star Review Great TV for the price

Strengths:

Crystal clear picture. What else do you want from a TV

Weaknesses:

Sucks a lot of power out of the box, but I think they all do

Posted 1 year ago - Let me address some of the negative items I've read about: -Blacks aren't as deep as they should be on a plasma: Who can tell the difference. I've actually paused BluRay on scenes with a lot of black and was not able to discern any area which was "not as black as it should be". My assumption is the reviews that write that are using test equipment which is far more sensitive than the human eye. If you want the best black ratings, buy a Kuro and spend $2-$3K more. This is a non-issue for me. -Poor sound quality: Seriously? You are buying a 50" plasma TV and intend on using the TV speakers? You buy this TV for the image quality, not the sound system. Go buy yourself a cheap HT in a box set for another $300 and start to enjoy the experience of minimal home theater. -Not the greatest in bright rooms: This is pretty true I believe. I usually have the shades drawn in my living room so not much of an issue for me, but if you do have a bright room, you would definitely want to take that into consideration. I have this TV connected to a Panasonic BluRay player and a Pioneer Elite receiver I picked up for about $550. It has Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master HD. I also have Definitive ProCenter 1000, ProSub 1000, and ProMonitor 1000's as well as flush mount SpeakerCraft ceiling speakers. You can go with a lot more or a lot less than this set up, but I will tell you, it is very difficult to peel myself off the couch. I also paid for the calibration. Was it worth it? I think so, but can't say for 100% sure. I know it does run a lot cooler now. Precalibration the screen temp was about 9,000 Kelvin, it's not about 6,000 Kelvin. The colors do look more realistic now as well and I am very happy with the performance. This TV is definitely worth the price. You will not be disappointed.

1 Star Review Don't buy this Samsung

Strengths:

Very good color, when it works

Weaknesses:

Defective rate

Posted 1 year ago - Nightmare product. Got it defective on 10/20 still waiting for Samsung to fix it through a local tech. Its almost a month later and it still has a white line running through the middle of it. The tech came twice already and said it was a "rare" defect. I got my model from mexico and there has been alot of chatter about defective units from there. I guess I was one of the unlucky one...I wish I bought the Panasonic plasma instead.

4 Star Review Best 1080p 50 inch Plasma TV for the Price

Strengths:

good picture quality, easy to set up

Weaknesses:

sound quality

Posted 1 year ago - From lots of research on plasma TVS, the Pioneer TVs look to be the best followed by high end Panasonic TVs and then Samsung TVs. The Pioneer TVs were extremely expensive. So, I looked at the Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U but it was consistently $600 to $700 more than the Samsung PN50A550. I ended up deciding that in my case the $600 to $700 more wasn't worth it and bought the Samsung. The TV was easy to set up. The picture quality is very good especially once I added my DirecTV HD tuner and Blu-Ray player. Going from a SD to HD picture is truly amazing. The one con is that the sound quality isn't very good especially at higher volumes. However, sound quality tends to be lacking in larger TVs. I will be looking into speakers in the future.

5 Star Review Outstanding Plasma TV

Strengths:

Quality of picture is outstanding-Easy to install and adjust to picture to preverance, remote control great.

Weaknesses:

NONE

Posted 1 year ago - After watching the unit for a week I must say it is best picture I have seen, did a lot of research and it came down to two products , Panasonic or Samsung. Feature I liked about Samsung was it offered USB port for picture input, Panasonic only offered SD input, with USB input can use SD or CF through the used of USB port. GReat service from BuyDig.com and certainly would buy again. Shipping of item was perfect as they use a great company to ship items.

5 Star Review Great TV, Glad I bought it.

Strengths:

Great picture, great sound. Good amount of HDMI interfaces, and component inputs.

Weaknesses:

None so Far

Posted 1 year ago - I researched for a long period of time and researched Plasma and LCD. Came to the Samsung PN50A550. Checked out Consumers reports and found that the TV had an excellent rating across the board. Went to all the stores and checked out the picture for myself and it was great. This set also has advanced anti-burn technology plus I do not play allot of games.

5 Star Review 50" Samsung Plasma 1080P

Strengths:

1080P, Nice looking unit, brand name

Weaknesses:

none so far

Posted 1 year ago - We had this for days now, the picture itself was first not as impressive, but after playing with some of the adjustment, we got it to what we think it should look. Dont have HD, so can comments on that part, but w/ a Samsung Upconvert DVD player, we can tell a big different.

5 Star Review Samsung 50" Plasma PN50A550

Strengths:

Sleek Look, Well Built, and Great Reputation

Weaknesses:

Remote (just get a little time to use to)and a little bit too long

Posted 1 year ago - We had been watching for a great price for this TV after a couple months research, and finally got it last week. TV is sleek, light weigh, very easy to maneuver thru menu and setup. Have to play a little bit with all the settings to get the right combination for the best picture (to our view of course). Best rating for Plasma.

Strengths:

Good Picture. Easy to understand set up and working with the remote. Great picture. The picture is so clear.

Weaknesses:

Took a little time getting used to the tv remote. But was able to work with it well. Just takes time getting used to it. No real weakness very pleased.

Posted 1 year ago - This is my first plasma tv and at first I thought I liked the LCD's better. But I am getting used to it and have no complaints. The picture is of great quality. I am so happy to have brought this tv. I would but another one like this if I had to.

Strengths:

Great Picture Quality and Easy to Set Up. Best Thing is TV comes in 1 Part and no assembly required.

Weaknesses:

So Far I have not seen any Negative effect so No CONS all Good things.

Posted 1 year ago - I would strongly recommend to Buy this 5 Series Samsung Plasma TV. This is my 2nd Plasma TV for other Room. Best Price to Pay for this 5 Series TV is @ 1800-1899$. I have also purchase MACK extended warranty for 3 years in home service for 100$. So Far I have AT&T Uverse and watching Base Ball in HD Channels and My Money is worth buying this. No need to spend any extra money for Samsung 6 Series Plasma TV. I bought this after doing lot of research on AVS Forum.

5 Star Review Great Plasma For the Price

Strengths:

Picture Quality ,Style of piano black bezel ,Customizing picture settings ,ease of use and connestions, look of base

Weaknesses:

None so far in 5 days of use

Posted May 21, 2008 - This plasma TV has a wonderful picture and hook was a breeze. I did little to adjust the settings right out of the box (cnet settings). I debated between this Samsung and the PZ85U from Panasonic, both were in the price range I wanted to spend and picture quality were close to the same (to me). It came down to looks and style. When turned off the Samsung was just nicer looking, mainly due to the base stand. I have mine in a coiner so I could not wall mount it with out sending alot more on a swivel arm mount so the base stand was important to me. I use a surround sound system so the TV's speaker meant nothing to me. I did order this product from an online company(Amazon) and had no problem with shipping. I got a better price than from the box stores just not the instant gratification of next day deliver. However, I had been shopping for mounthes so whats a few more days and three or four hundred dollars in my pocket. I would highly recommend this plasma TV.
