Decent TV for a Decent Price
Strengths: Good picture, good TV design, good price
Weakness: Could use better menu options, swivel stand
This TV was purchased for a college apartment on limited funds. I was trying to find a middle of the range TV which I thought would be the best deal for the price. I wanted something that wouldn't take up too much space and that would be easy to move. With that criteria in mind I decided on a 37 or 40 inch LCD. I picked LCD instead of plasma because it uses less energy which would help the environment and our energy bill.
I compared the specs to this TV to equivalent models from Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba and ended up with this TV. The Samsung has a slightly better contrast ratio which is noticeable but I did not think it was worth the higher price. I'm happy with my purchase because other than the black levels the TV is probably at the head of the pack of entry level HDTVs. It provides all the inputs and outputs you need including HDMI in and optical out for surround sound. The built in QAM tuners picks up HD channels from the basic cable we have with Comcast. Standard definition is watchable and the HD available is super clear.
I wish the menu system allowed for more tweaks then what Sharp has now. My friend has a cheaper priced Vizio which has many more features than the Sharp; like channel labels. Although the stretch and zoom modes are perfectly fine it would have been nice to see a few more options. I'm guessing Sharp saves the better options for their higher end lines. Same complaint for the remote, it could be much better. The TV we have at home is a Hitachi which has a very comprehensive menu for tweaks and a great remote. A good thing about the remote is that the buttons have an amazing smooth texture.
For the price it is a very good TV. The Samsung had a slightly better picture but I didn't think it was worth it. Compare the TV's side by side and you can decide for yourself. I know I'm happy with my purchase and my roommates are happy with it too. I just hope Sharp releases some firmware updates to add some more features.
So the picture is 4 stars but the features is about 3 stars.
After more use, I downgraded to 3 stars.
