4 Star Review Pretty nice little unit

Strengths:

I like how quickly it can scan through the frequencies. I like that there is enough cord to be able to put the controls nearby. I like that you are able to individually step through the frequencies.

Weaknesses:

The FM transmitter could stand to be a little bit more powerful.

Posted Jun 1, 2006 - It is a pain in the tuckus to be able to find a frequency that is un-occupied by a radio station. It would be way cooler if this were able to find an empty frequency on its own. I already own the other FM transmitter (RoadTrip) from Griffin, and I think this one is better. The RoadTrip is constantly being bounced out of the cigarette adapter and then the transmitter abruptly shuts off. This one keeps a snug fit the whole time.

2 Star Review Not impressed

Strengths:

It charges the iPod while plugged in.

Weaknesses:

Very low volume (even with sound check off). Lot's of static. If the output volume from your iPod is low, the device shuts off after a period of time.

Posted Apr 29, 2007 - I bought this to be able to play the sound of a movie over my SUV's radio while the kids watched in the back using an aftermarket ceiling mount LCD. It seemed like a good idea since you can store more than enough movies on a 5G iPod to last most trips. I was expecting not perfect sound, but at least good enough to hear the dialog in a movie, however, it's terrible. 87.9 seems to be the most reliable in my area, but even so the static is louder than the dialog. What's worse is that at some quiet points in a movie, the device shuts off (it's meant to autodetect an audio source from the iPod, but the threshold seems too high) and because you have the volume turned up high on the car radio to hear, you suddenly get blasted by white noise from the radio. If they fixed the threshold, increased the output volume and signal strength, this would be a good product. As it is, it's not really useful except as a charger.

4 Star Review iTrip Auto FM Transmitter and Auto Charger for iPod

Strengths:

Charger works well, sound quality generally acceptable, wide range of station settings

Weaknesses:

Noticeable static during periods of low volume

Posted Aug 28, 2006 - Based on other reviews and personal experience with Griffin and competing products, I doubt any FM transmitter works better. There's just so much you can get out of this technology. Think in terms of "better than an AM station but not as good as a good FM station". If that could meet your needs--for spoken-word podcasts, for instance--then go ahead and get one of these.

5 Star Review A "Must Have" item for road trippers with ipods

Strengths:

Very easy to use, clear sound, very portable. Charges the ipod while transmitting to your FM radio. Fantastic sound!

Weaknesses:

None that I have found.

Posted May 7, 2006 - Very easy to use, clear sound, flexibility. The option for switching between mono channel and stereo is very nice when I'm riding in my friends '66 mustang, whose old radio only has a single channel for music. We'd listen to our ipods on his cassette adapter but would only get half the music. With the Mono/stereo option i can listen to it in stereo in my Jetta and my friend's Jeep Cherokee which has no cassette player for an adapter, and the listen to the entire song (granted, only in mono), not just half of it in my friend's mustang. In any case it sounds a lot better. I haven't tested the range yet to see if other cars can pick it up but I've used it from the back seat as well and the signal is clear as a bell. This item is great for long road trips because it charges the ipod while at the same time transmitting and is the only device I've found that combines the two. I strongly recommend this item. I even bought one for my parent's as a gift and they love it.

4 Star Review iTrip Auto FM Transmitter and Auto Charger for iPod

Strengths:

Small, lightweight.

Weaknesses:

Has to be plugged into a car. I wish it could transmit without being plugged in.

Posted Feb 17, 2006 - This transmitter is great because it charges your iPod while you use it. It is also very easy to use, and matches my black iPod. I would recommend this product.

4 Star Review Clear sound but sometime doesn't hold default freq.

Strengths:

Very clear sound out of car FM radio. Recessed buttons to control FM frequency.

Weaknesses:

Set FM frequency frequently changes.

Posted Jun 16, 2007 - I lost my previous iPod charger/FM transmitter so I bought the iTrip charger/FM transmitter. It is smaller and has clearer sound quality than my previous one. In addition, the buttons to control which FM frequency it will transmit on are flush with the surface of the iTrip. That is important because my old one had raised buttons that often got inadvertently hit as it was being moved around inside the car, causing me to lose the signal on the radio. ---------------------------------------------------- There are three bad things about the iTrip * First - several times a week I have to reset the transmit frequency to 107.9 MHz (no local radio stations on it near me) because it has defaulted back to 102.2 MHz. This happens only when I first get into the car. In my car the power socket I use for the iTrip loses power when the car is off. iTrip power plug is smaller than the previous one and goes into socket firmly and doesn't shake loose. * Second - I find the scan rate for changing frequencies a little too quick and once it gets to the highest/lowest frequency it rolls over to the lowest/highest and continues the scan. I would prefer it to stop or pause when reaching the end of the frequency range. The frequencies I listen to FM transmitters at are at the low and high end of the FM frequency band. * Third - Another "feature" of iTrip is after you press the stop button on your iPod, 5-15 seconds later the FM transmitter shuts off so you then get static on the radio. ---------------------------------------------------- The problems are a slight inconvenience but overall this one is much better than my previous one. Very good sound quality is the take away.

2 Star Review Not A Buy

Strengths:

Small and a charger.

Weaknesses:

Way too much static, not worth using. Tried it in 3 different cars (83' Porsche, 00' Lexus SUV & 03' MBZ) too, same poor quality.

Posted Nov 22, 2006 - Used Belkin, Kensington, Monster, JBL and Griffin. Monster and Kensington were the best then the Griffin fell to the bottom. Was surprised, Griffin makes decent iPod gadgets in general!

3 Star Review Size is nice, performance needs work.

Strengths:

It's small and easy to use. You can change the transmission frequency very easily and you can connect it pretty much everywhere.

Weaknesses:

Very noisy and lots of static. I've tried other FM transmitters and I get a lot less static. I don't know if the small size plays a factor here, but if you don't care about a constant background fuzz,

Posted May 16, 2006 - It's nice to be able to hear your Ipod in your car, but I would spend a few more dollars and get a higher quality trasmitter with less static.

5 Star Review itrip auto

Strengths:

Compact, includes charger, strong signal, good price, no batteries required

Weaknesses:

Comes only in black - doesn't match white ipod

Posted Apr 4, 2007 - The itrip auto is the best fm modulator I have ever used. Unlike its competitors, it does not require batteries, which saves me a lot of money in the long run. I first bought a belkin tunecast II and it lasted only 4 hours per set of batteries, not nearly long enough for a road trip. Additionally, it had a very weak signal. Once I used a friend's itrip, I was sold on its superior signal and features. I am very happy with my purchase.

4 Star Review Good performer

Strengths:

Decent sound, easy to use, good choice of frequencies.

Weaknesses:

Does not use iPod volume control, occasional static.

Posted Aug 6, 2006 - This is a good transmitter. I live in Chicago - very few open frequencies here; setting the iTrip to 87.9 does the trick. I only hear static when there's obvious interference - utility poles, large transmitters and such. I've used this on several trips across the midwest with good results. My only quibble is that the volume could be a bit beefier, but that may just be my stock Civic radio. Overall I'm happy with this one. Recommended.

1 Star Review WEAK PRODUCT, DON'T BUY.

Strengths:

It's black

Weaknesses:

The signal is really weak.

Posted May 18, 2006 - If you like to get aLOT of static. Pick this up... BELKIN has much better products. Check them out. Do yourself a favor and don't buy from this company. I've tried...

3 Star Review iTrip Review

Strengths:

It's compact and easy to use. Few buttons make operation while driving less confusing.

Weaknesses:

When travelling long distances, frequencies selected sometimes start receiving radiowaves and transmit music over the previously selected station. This means that the channel needs to be re-selected.

Posted May 11, 2006 - The iTrip meets my expectations in that it does what it's supposed to do. However, it lacks functionality. It only plays whatever music you have on your iPod. That's it. And if you're in an area where there's good radio reception, it's very difficult to get a station that transmits only static. The quality of the music thus played is greatly compromised.

1 Star Review itrip auto - what a waste

Strengths:

small and battery free

Weaknesses:

lousy fm transmitter. too small buttons. select button broke on first day

Posted May 27, 2006 - Don't bother...see weaknesses. If you live in a congested city like Los Angeles, this will be worthless. The unit was overcome by static every other block. Much of the time static stepped all over EVERY station I tried. Finally, the select button broke/got stuck in the depressed position. What a waste!

4 Star Review itrip

Strengths:

it works excellent

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Feb 20, 2006 - working great ,highly recommended, you may use it everywhere you want (europe, us - anywhere) choose the frequency you want to use and you are ready to go, advice don't set it on 88.1 most of satelite radios works on that frequwncy and those may brake through.

2 Star Review Don't waste your money...

Strengths:

Easy to change frequencies, charger works well

Weaknesses:

Poor volume, reception is static

Posted Jul 8, 2007 - I purchased this item after buying an itrip for my last two ipod tranmitters(mine & my wife's). Due to the new configuration of the 80g ipods, I was in the market for a new transmitter. I figured a Griffin product would be pretty reliable. Boy was I wrong. The first problem with this unit is you can only use it if you have a 12 volt outlet nearby (basically limits it to a car, boat, RV, etc...sorry, no boom boxes). The other problem is that the volume is no longer controllable with the ipod click wheel. It has a preset volume level that's grossly under powered. Every time I try to turn the volume up, along with the increase in volume you also get an annoying increase in static. If your a music fan that leans toward the more subtle nuances of music(Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Elton John, etc...) this will become unbareable to the ear. Do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere. I wish I would have spent my money on the 'monster' transmitter.
