Color - 31 Second Photo - 300 x 300 dpi - USB, PictBridge - PC, Mac - MPN: 0325B001
Strengths: Excellent Print Quality - Fast Print Time - Waterproof - Smudgeproof - Easy to Set Up & Use - Retractable USB Cord - Small Size - Low Cost Per Print
Weakness: No Image Cropping - Small Image Screen
After trying the Canon DS810 and finding the ink smudged badly, I decided to try the CP710 Dye Sublimation printer. Wow, what a difference! This is a great little printer. Its very small, easy to set-up and operate and the print quality is equal to any photo lab. The prints really are waterproof and smudgeproof. Although you can't crop in the printer it's a miniscule trade-off for doing everything else very well. I would recommend this printer to anyone. Oh, the retractable USB cord is a nice feature...no hunting for an extra cord. Get one!

TopStrengths: Photo Lab Quality Prints; Small footprint
Weakness: Only prints 4x6 without extra cost trays for other sizes
I have been a confirmed ink jet photo printer person who has been very skeptical of these small dye-sublimation printers. In fact, I never even considered buying one until I purchased a Canon Powershot A610 digital camera for my daughter. Then, I figured I would get a compact printer to make it easier for her to print her photos. After looking over what was available I decided to buy the recently released Canon CP710. I never expected much because a sample printout from a different brand dye-sub printer I saw at a computer store did not impress me much. When the CP710 arrived, I tested it with two photos from my computer via a USB cable. I printed one JPEG picture using Canon's Easy Photoprint software, and I printed one enhanced TIFF file with an embedded AdobeRGB profile from Adobe Photoshop. I was surprised by the quality of the prints. They were far better than I had expected. The next day, I took some photos with my Canon EOS 20D SLR digital camera. I printed two pictures directly from the camera, then I printed the same two directly from the Compactflash card, and finally I printed the same two via Photoship to my Canon i960 photo printer using full color management. The two printed on the CP710 via the Compactflash card were very close to the two color-managed prints from the i960. To compare the relatively accuracy of the colors of the CP710, I then printed the same two photos on the i960 without color management. The i960 without color management over-saturated the reds somewhat. I am very surprised that the CP710 was able to closely match the color-managed i960 photos in color accuracy. I'm impressed with both the photo lab quality of the CP710 printouts (which matched the i960 in continuous tone colors) and the color accuracy which was almost as good as a full color-managed workflow. While I am still not about to give up my fully color-managed workflow because I can always depend upon accurate printouts on the i960, I now have to admit that the CP710 really is a terrific way to quickly make high quality 4x6 prints from a digital camera.

TopStrengths: Dye sublimation, continuous tone, low cost ink/paper kit, compact
Weakness: Smallish LCD, somewhat flimsy paper tray
If you want photo quality printouts just like the labs then do not settle for the inkjet variety. Dye-sublimation is the way to go, just like this CP710 and it's cousin the CP510. These compact printers are fast and produce very high quality 4x6 to 4x8 prints that no 6-color photo inkjet can touch. Get the 108 count paper/ink cartridge kit and your cost is only 28 cents per page.

TopStrengths: Small and vert portable, good quality prints
Weakness: relatively expensive price per print
I previously had the Canon CP-200 which was one of the earlier Canon dye sublimation printers. I bought the Canon Selphy as an upgrade. The interface is a lot more user friendly. It used the same dye sublimation technology and even uses the same cartridge and paper. Print quality remains great, but the relative price per print cost is high. It's good if there are photos you want to print immediately at home. Otherwise, online photo printing services are still cheaper.

TopStrengths: compact, makes good quality photos
Weakness: expensive add ons, expensive paper and ink
This is a nice compact photo printer that makes good quality prints. Printing speed is a little bit slow, but not unexpected given that this is a dye sublimation printer.
Unfortunately, add on parts like batteries are expensive, and the ink cartridge/photo paper are also expensive. I probably end up spending 37 cents per print with this printer.

The Canon Selphy CP710 is the Mini Cooper of printers: small, stylish, and fast. In fact, it is the fastest compact printer we've tested thus far: outperforming both compact dye subs and ink jets.

Meets expectations
Strengths: Small size, good quality
Weakness: Image screen is tiny
I purchased this printer from Amazon for on-the-fly printing of photos. The quality of the prints is quite acceptable and it fits the bill for instantaneous prints. The device does not allow for cropping and the screen is small, but these are okay trade-offs for the easy portability.
