5 Star Review a good low end laser printer for personal use

Strengths:

small size, first page come out very fast, good quality

Weaknesses:

not find yet

Posted Nov 12, 2005 - I connet this printer to my PC only and use it to print word document or website, it did those work very well and very fast, and I can't feel that its small memory is a issue for me, but may be it will be an issue if you print a lot of images or connet it to the network. this printer is smaller than most of the similiar price one and very light, so it is very easy to move around so I recommend this printer for personal use

4 Star Review Super fast but has drawbacks

Strengths:

Fastest printer I've had for this price.

Weaknesses:

No buttons (cancel, form feed, etc.)

Posted Oct 19, 2005 - This printer was purchased for my department use, primarily for printing scanned documents and invoices with small detailed logos. I am thoroughly impressed with the speed. Normally we have to stand and wait for the paper to come out but with this one, by the time we walk the six feet it's done & waiting. "If you blink, you'll miss it." Images are as clear as the scan on the computer, there's not a single detail lost. It saves time and was very inexpensive. However, if there is a paper jam there's no button to form feed or cancel the print job. You have to reach around back to turn the thing off and the indicator lights pretty much show on & off. The software also only allows for "retry" if you run out of paper. A little screen pops up saying "Help" or "Retry." For people who get too impatient with these types of things or need it to tell them what's wrong and how to go about fixing it, this printer may not be the best option.

4 Star Review A fantastic personal use laser speedster...

Strengths:

1. Great value 2. Compact design 3. Excellent print speed 4. Modest noise level 5. Simple and easy to use software 6. Reasonably priced replacement toner cartridge

Weaknesses:

1. Doesn't come with necessary USB cable 2. Smallish input/output trays 3. Pages come out curled on the edges

Posted Feb 4, 2006 - I pretty much had it with my old inkjet printer. There was no way I was going to sink any more money into that deadbeat. The days of poor print quality and horribly slow print speed were over. I did some research and decided on a laser printer. Rarely did I ever print anything with color graphics or full color text, so a black and white laser printer was the best pick for me. I found the HP LaserJet 1020 on sale over the internet for ~$100 + shipping. I found this to be an excellent price, which wasn't going to be around for much longer. Along with the printer, I also purchased an HP toner cartridge for the LJ 1020 which cost ~$50 which is very reasonable, compared to competing printer's replacement toner cartridge costs. One excellent feature is that the roller drum assembly is integrated into the toner cartridge, and not fixed into the printer itself. So when the toner cartridge is used up, you put another new one in, with a new integrated roller drum assembly. This saves down the road on additional maintenance costs. I found it would cost over $100 to replace a roller drum assembly every ~12,000 pages, on other competing printers. One thing to be aware of is that the LJ1020 does not come with the necessary USB cable needed to link it up with your PC. Be sure to purchase this along with the printer, or you'll be making a trip to the local retailer. Prices over the internet for this USB cable will be much cheaper than in a brick and mortar store. Upon receiving the printer, I opened up the retail box to find a well packaged and very secure little gray and beige mini-machine. I was surprised how small and compact the design was. It fit perfectly on my somewhat crowded computer desk, and was hardly much bigger than my old inkjet printer. I like how the input and output trays fold up when not in use, which minimizes the LJ1020's footprint. The only problem with the trays is that they are a bit on the small side, with the input tray holding 150 pages and the output tray holding 100 pages. With the speed of the printer, and the small tray size, you really have to stay on top of it, and keep the input tray full of paper. It tends to run out very quickly when printing many pages at a time. Installation of the printer is a breeze. Plugging in the USB cable and power cord is a snap, and the latest drivers for the LJ1020 from HP's web site come in at a mere 2.5MB. In these days of bloatware and excessive, unecessary junk applications, it's nice to see that HP can still deliver a simple, small, and easy to use software interface. Using the printer for the first time was a jaw-dropping experience. I printed a couple of test pages and was amazed how fast this little bugger was going. On top of that the print quality was just superb, with the text coming out razor sharp. The time from clicking 'Print' to the time the first page came out was indeed ~10 seconds as advertised on the retail box. The LJ1020 does heat up quite a bit, but this is to be expected with the speed of which is fires off pages. Speaking of which the pages do come out warm and this leads to alot of curling on the edges, which is a bit bothersome until they cool off. More of a new experience for me, than anything else. The sound of the printer is about average, being no more noisy than my old inkjet printer. It definetly won't bug you too much if you're sitting right next to it and printing 100's of pages. Although I haven't had the LJ1020 for a very long time, my initial impressions have been very good and I feel that it will be a quality product that will last me for many years. If you're looking for a home/office black and white laser printer, check out the HP LaserJet 1020. You'll be surprised at the speed and excellent print quality that this compact little machine puts out. And it's definetly a worthwhile investment to bring you out of the inkjet doldrums.

4 Star Review A solid inexpensive printer

Strengths:

price, HP reliaiblity and support, fast startup, silent

Weaknesses:

no fan, host based driver, not networkable

Posted Feb 21, 2006 - This is a great budget printer with a small footprint. Output is quick on startup. Excellent HP reliability and support. Pricey toner cartridges, however it does come with a full cartridge. Please note however that the printer is host based meaning it needs to be connected to a computer to operate. Therefore, it can not be connected to a print server and networked. If you have no need to network this printer, then its probably the best budget laser printer out there.

4 Star Review Good personal printer

Strengths:

1.short time for first page 2.small size 3.excellent price for "personal" laser printer

Weaknesses:

1.usb cable not included. 2.limited memory

Posted Nov 3, 2005 - Here is my case: I bought this printer for personal use. It means I will not connect it to any server buy only my PC. In addition, I just need to print some reports or webpages. Therefore, I don't need a printer which has heavy duty cycle. Considering the built-in memory, although it is just 2MB, I believe it won't be a big problem if you won't share the printer via server with someone else. The print speed is so fast that could make you forget the size of memory. In conclusion, I would like to recommend it for people who has the similar situation.

4 Star Review Good for the Money

Strengths:

Affordable printer that prints quickly and clearly.

Weaknesses:

Small memory(2mb). Could be smaller in size. Power button located on the back. No USB cable included.

Posted Aug 22, 2005 - This is a great printer for the price. It would be difficult to find a better laser printer in its price range. The main drawback would be it's slight bulkiness and lack of a USB cable in the package.

4 Star Review Can't resist mentioning this ...

Strengths:

Although setup diagrams always drive me insane there's practically no need for them with this printer.

Weaknesses:

None found yet.

Posted Jun 8, 2006 - I'm probably spatially challenged because the little diagrams that come with most setup manuals usually flummox me. I usually bypass them and see if I can make sense of the pieces to be assembled themselves. As usual my wife watched a little apprehensively as I pulled the plastic tape out of the new toner cartridge. (She knows what my strengths are, and this is not one of them.) Then I held the cartridge over the gaping, and I might add, highly irregularly shaped orifice in the printer in which it must go, thinking, "Good grief, I'm sure glad there are only two possible orientations." Just then the toner cartridge slipped from my fingertips ... ... and fell into place. Literally. I closed the lid, installed the software, connected the power cord and the USB cable and then printed the test page. Hoooooo-hawwww! It doesn't matter that I hate computer hardware.

4 Star Review HP 1020 Laser

Strengths:

Prints fast and delivers execllent text quality for word documents. Small enough to fit on desk wihtout taking up too much room.

Weaknesses:

There are no indicator lights on top to indicate low toner or paper. Laser is best used for individual use; only holds 150 sheets of paper at a time. No paper guard when loading into machin

Posted Sep 20, 2005 - This is a good, quality laser printer for students. It's compact size fits on a desk without taking up too much room and it prints very good quality text at an affordable price. Note that this laser only holds 150 sheets of paper at a time if you need to print large quantities & only has 2mb of memory. Look for sale price on this item as you can purchase it under the $179 retail price.

4 Star Review Good value

Strengths:

Very fast printing, especially first page. Great text quality.

Weaknesses:

not networkable

Posted Mar 7, 2006 - Good price for what you get especially when you find a sale. Good for if you want a printer just for text. No problems I've seen with it yet.

4 Star Review cheap and works great!

Strengths:

For about $150, it is probably the best laser printer you can get.

Weaknesses:

it does not support PCL. Not big deal for me. The memory is kind of small (2MB), but again no big deal.

Posted Feb 20, 2006 - The printer is reasonably priced and it works great. The start up time is less than 10 seconds, and the printing is very fast. You can leave it at stand by mode (power comsumption is only 2 watts).

4 Star Review HP (Hewlett-Packard) LaserJet 1020 Laser Printer

Strengths:

The size is small & it's quiet and fast. The overall quality is very good compare to my old Brother printer.

Weaknesses:

It's a printer only for PC,and you can't make a copy. The HP toner price is high.

Posted Mar 9, 2006 - Overall, I would strongly recommend others to purchase this product. It's low cost, but with an excellent text printing quality. It is definitely a worth-to-buy personal laser printer, because of light weight, small size, and fast printing.

4 Star Review HP LaserJet 1020 Printer

Strengths:

Quiet Quick Printing Print Cartridge lasts longer than other brands virtually no warmup time

Weaknesses:

no cancel button no PCL driver

Posted Feb 21, 2006 - This printer is easy to install and it is ready to print once turned on unlike other printers that need about half to a minute to warm up. The print quality is great, although pictures aren't that great but this is common for most laser printers especially in this price range. The ink is dried onto the paper and it won't run easily. Overall, this is a great printer for the price paid.

5 Star Review High Quality at Bargain Price

Strengths:

Fast, Quiet, High Quality Print

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Jun 9, 2006 - The HP LaserJet 1020 is a high quality, economic black & white laser printer. I bought this printer after I got tired of spending a fortune on ink jet cartridges. The toner lasts much longer and is much cheaper per page. The printer was easy to set up and I was printing my first page in minutes. The first page starts printing within seconds of hitting the print button. Printer operation is smooth and quiet. This printer is nothing fancy. It only performs one simple task - producing high quality, sharp, black and white pages. This printer retails for $199, but it seems to be readily available for $100 - $120. It just can't be beat at that price!
