Fast, Beautiful Prints
Fast, great prints, easy setup, comes with full ink cartridges, compact footprint
Expensive to run, need to switch matte and photo black, no USB cable, short FireWire cable, requires a lot of space
Posted Aug 14, 2007 - I once swore to myself that I'd never buy another Epson product again after having dealt with their awful warranty service. However, let's face it: Epson makes the best printers and scanners out there. If you want great print quality, then you buy Epson with an eye on the R2400. This sub-$1000 printer makes absolutely gorgeous, archival quality prints, and if you know what you're doing, you'll easily be printing within half an hour after getting the printer. Within an hour, I had several great 13x19 prints made from RAW files taken with my Canon 5D. Setup was ridiculously simple and fast on my MacBook, and I was very happy to see that full ink cartridges (rather than some starter set) were included. Unfortunately, what's not included is a USB cable, which is mildly annoying, and the FireWire cable is rather short. Other annoying things include the need to devote a lot of space to the printer in my office and the very stupid requirement of switching photo and matte black inks. What were they thinking here? It's a huge waste of ink to switch, and it's a very common need to switch between matte and glossy paper. I found myself throwing away a couple sheets of matte paper when I had forgotten that the ink inside was photo. The other major annoyance is the cost. The printer itself isn't too expensive at less than $800, but the paper and ink costs add up quickly! However, if you want guaranteed archival quality prints, then that's really the only way to go.
