The AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor puts the power of dual-core technology on the desktop. Dual-core processors contain two processing cores, residing on one chip, that perform calculations on two streams of data, thereby increasing efficiency and speed while running multiple programs and the new generation of multi-threaded software. For the end-user this means a significant increase in response and performance when running multiple applications simultaneously. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor outperforms the highest-performing AMD Athlon 64 4000+ single-core processor on multi-tasking benchmarks by up to 30%. minimize

4 Star Review First AMD purchase, satisfied

Strengths:

Price/performance, warranty

Weaknesses:

Power consumption, cache size

Posted Sep 7, 2006 - There isn't much to comment on with respect to a processor. There are plenty of reviews and benchmarks that describe its performance aspect, which show that it is comparable to or slightly better than an Intel Pentium D 930. It is positioned as the entry level dual-core AMD offering, a position that Intel Pentium D 805 occupied just a few months ago. For its price, the AMD AM2 X2 3800 is a good deal. There are just enough AM2 motherboards around to make a low-cost but up-to-date system possible. With the advent of Intel's Core 2 Duo, AMD processors no longer monopolize the claim to be cool-running. Whilst there are low power versions of this processor available at a slight premium, the standard version is still quite a lightbulb (38C idle, 50C under load), but never so much so as to be a problem. Cool'n'Quiet works, but somehow just isn't all that impressive. For example, I don't believe there is core shutdown or anything beyond what the last generation of mobile processors have implemented (although to be fair, this is a desktop processor design). Hardware virtualization support is there, but it doesn't even get used. VMWare seems to have implemented Intel's virtualization technology, for now. Bottom line: For the price-sensitive, this seems to be a good value at the moment.

5 Star Review Dual-Core Power, Extreme Speed

Strengths:

Low Price, Ultra-Fast Performance, DDR2 Support, Cool-Running Temperatures

Weaknesses:

Too Fast :-)

Posted Aug 29, 2006 - If you are the person thinking about Conroe, think again! I honestly don't think that this price/performance ratio can be beat! It's amazing that Windows boots so fast, yet the processor runs cool, and AMD Cool and Quiet Works great! If you are looking to buy a cheap, but super fast computer, look no further then this processor. The reliability and availability of the AM2 platform makes this processor a sure win.

5 Star Review I like it.

Strengths:

Fast for the money. Dual Core.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Oct 1, 2006 - Used for first PC build. Overclocked 8% with no overheating, yet. At the time it was the best bang for the buck. Dual Core at half the price of CPU's only slightly faster. This CPU will last a good while before needed upgraded. Definetly would recommend.

3 Star Review good bang for buck, but look out for core 2 duo

Strengths:

good price/performance ratio, AMD setups are currently cheaper than core 2 duos

Weaknesses:

AM2 platform requires lots upgrades for older AMD users (DDR-->DDR2, AGP-->PCIe, compatible HSF); doesn't come with the AMD copper heatpipe cooler (standard aluminum block HSF is included)

Posted Aug 24, 2006 - Built a completely new AM2 X2 3800+. The move to AM2 is probably going to mean a whole new set of components as this is now DDR2. I got this because I needed to build a system quickly. Got a good deal when AMD cut prices to compete w/ Conroe, but now that Conroe/Core 2 is available I'd definitely wait for that and its motherboard prices to go down as it will be faster/better. It's still a great processor (especially with the price drop), but I wouldn't recommend buying another AMD product right now.

5 Star Review Great Processotr, excellent price

Strengths:

value for dollar, now that they cut the price. 3 year warranty, great support, excellent instructions, easy to install.

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Oct 12, 2006 - This AMD boxed processor is a great value, and has an excellent 3 yr warranty. I called AMD support to ask a question about this processor, and they promptly answered my question with a minimum amount of hold time. The instruction manual has large illustrations and are very easy to understand.

5 Star Review Fast!!!

Strengths:

Very powerful, Vista ready, fast and very affordable.

Weaknesses:

None as far as I'm concerned.

Posted Jul 30, 2006 - This processor can handle anything you throw at it. I've been able to run many complex programs at once without a hitch. The AM2 3800+ should easily last in the processor market for the next 3-4 years, especially since it utilizes DDR2 RAM. Buy one now, you won't be disappointed!!

5 Star Review Sweet Speed

Strengths:

Its Dual Core, it has 64bit support, and its made by AMD

Weaknesses:

The Price and heatsink was hard to install

Posted Jul 16, 2006 - This is a great processor. Hopefully it will last me 3+ years. It makes my system run without any lags. It requires DDR2 ram. The price is not exactly the nicest, but its worth it because it Dual Core and has 64bit support.

5 Star Review Solid Performance, exceptional value!

Strengths:

Beats comparable Intel processors out of the water.

Weaknesses:

The 939 socket and accompanying chipsets are not able to utilize DDR2 memory. Computer locks up sometimes, but problaby not due to the processor. Stock heatsink a bit weak, but works.

Posted Jul 6, 2006 - I have been using this CPU in my newest computer for over 6 months not and I have to say that the performance is spectacular. I multitask a lot and this thing does not slow down. I can have over 30 windows open at once without any problems. This processor seriously has the best bang for the buck, at least when I bought it. I highly recommend it. Pair this with the Arctic Cooling 64 Freezer Pro and you are set!

5 Star Review Great Buy

Strengths:

Socket AM2, Dual Core, Uses less power than Intel Core Duo

Weaknesses:

Not getting it sooner, only 3800+

Posted Jul 31, 2006 - AMD is great at planning for the future. The new socket AM2 supports DDR2 only as DDR will be phased out soon. AMD will most likely use the AM2 socket for a its next processor. It has dual cores which make multitasking a breeze. Pair it up with 2GB of RAM and it can handle anything you throw at it.

5 Star Review Great CPU!

Strengths:

Fast Budget Dual Core CPU.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Oct 18, 2006 - Great Budget dual core CPU. Entry level into the dual core world. Very fast and very overclockable. Great bang for the buck. Requires DDR2 RAM. Get the socket 939 version if you want to reuse your old DDR RAM. Cool 'N Quiet works great.

5 Star Review A great buy, especially at the current prices

Strengths:

This processor runs fast and cool, is inexpensive and reliable, and has 64-bit support (I'm hoping that this benefit will be more obviously useful in the future).

Weaknesses:

None are striking. If you're compulsive about noise, the fan does make some. If it bothers you, you could buy an Arctic Silencer or the like. I'll update with any problems, if I have any.

Posted Nov 29, 2006 - I bought this processor right after the post-Conroe-release price drop for about $150. At the time, I was primarily considering the 4000+ (2 MB L2 cache) model, but the purchase fell through, and I bought this one on the spur of the moment. I haven't noticed any deficiencies in performance that would make me regret my decision. In a Lian Li VCool case, it runs at about 33 degrees Celsius with some minimal noise. I haven't done anything particularly stressful on my system yet. We'll see how it performs once I get Folding up and running. =) There quite a number of very informed reviews at Newegg.com to which I would direct any curious potential buyers.

5 Star Review Solid

Strengths:

It's strong. Easy to setup. Allows you to remain in AMD's upgrade path.

Weaknesses:

The fan is loud. More below. Heatsink and fan was stubborn to latch onto the board. Requires DDR2 plus new board.

Posted Oct 27, 2006 - Dual core for a great price on AMD's next socket. If you have to update an old system, it's a better upgrade path to go AM2 than get socket 939. Dear lord... this fan is noisy as hell. I bought most of my components to minimize noise. Unfortunately, the retail fan does not help so I may buy something else. I would have to say that this is the noise leader in my case. It's like a 747 landing at my desk. It was a great value when I got it and has been a solid performer thus far. Again, going AM2 now is less hassle later since AM2 is the upgrade path for now.

5 Star Review Best bang for the buck

Strengths:

Overclockable Cheap

Weaknesses:

None.

Posted Aug 18, 2006 - Unfortunately, I bought mines4 weeks before the pricedropped and paid twice as much. Anyways, I thgought this was DOA since my pc wasn't booting, but it wasn't and AMD's tech support is probably the best I have come in contact with. It should be pretty nice because it is AM2 the newest socket avaiable by AMD at this point. On top of all of this, this proc is Dual Core.

5 Star Review Best CPU for the price

Strengths:

2 cores, energy efficient, and very inexpensive.

Weaknesses:

none

Posted May 17, 2007 - I was trying to decide what CPU to buy for my secondary system, and choice was between AMD Athlon X2 and Intel Core2Duo. I've read lots of reviews, and it seems like Core2Duo is superior to AMD X2's, however when I saw this CPU for $65 at Frys.com I didn't need to think twice before buying it. I'm currently using it with Ubuntu 7.04 and the performance is amazing. Energy efficiency (65W) is also great. I highly recommend this CPU to anyone building a powerful value PC.

5 Star Review AMD

Strengths:

Runs super fast and low temps!

Weaknesses:

none

Posted May 15, 2007 - Probably the best valve for a cpu(other than the 3600 x2 Brisbane). Overclocks to 2.8ghz and runs superfast! Upgraded from a 3.4ghz P4. Abel to muli-task and does not slow it down!
