Simply Awesome

Strengths:

Dual Core 3.0GHz with 6MB L2 cache. Cheaper than E6850 with more L2 cache. Runs very cool. FSB is 1333MHz.

Weaknesses:

Posted Feb 5, 2008 - I upgraded from a Pentium D 945 and found this CPU to run at least 10C-12C cooler. Idle temp was 32C. Under a heavy load (which wasn't stressing the computer out) it got to about 42C. The C2D architecture is definitely far more superior than the Pentium D series dual cores. I would highly recommend this CPU due to its price point and outstanding low temps and performance.

Intel Core Duo E8400 Dual Processor

Posted Feb 16, 2008 - Unbelievable upgrade from my Core2 Duo 2.13 CPU. First, and MOST importantly, the heat generated from the E8400 is significantly less than any other Intel processor I have bought. One thing I immediately noticed is the Intel heatsink/fan is about 50% smaller than ones I purchased previously. I did some research and found that Intel uses the Celeron version of the heatsink and fan with the E8400. Although I had ordered the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro to help cool this processor, I have discovered the Intel retail heatsink/fan does just as well (although not as quiet as the Artic Freezer). Am I satisified with the E8400? YES!! Runs faster and cooler that my Core2 Duo 2.13. I paid $219 plus shipping and think I got a great dea!

The new top dog dual core processor!

Posted Mar 4, 2008 - This is one amazing processor. With the 45nm process that greatly reduces heat, the E8400 is an overclocking monster which doesn't break the bank. Every one of these E8400 processors can be overclocked to 4GHz with a minor bump in core voltage provided your motherboard can support bus speeds that high. I've taken my processor as high as 4365 MHz stable @ 1.55V, but am now running it at 4185 MHz @ 1.45V to keep the temperatures down.

Great Processor for the price!

Strengths:

3.0ghz and can be overclocked to 4.0ghz, fast dual-core, cheap for what it does, new technology 45nm, runs pretty cool, great gaming and multi-tasking processor

Weaknesses:

Might have temp problems on some boards until bios update, besides that this processor is a winner in my opinion

Posted Apr 18, 2008 - The e8400 was very hard to find when it just came out, and all the retailers/etailers raised their prices by $50+. I eventually got it for the cheapest price i have seen from a retail store. This processor gives you a slight advantage over the e6850 which i have on my other PC, so if you have a e6850, no need to upgrade yet. I had the e8400 on an ip35 pro which worked fine but the cpu temps were off the charts, until bios update like someone previously stated. I think this is the best processor performace/price. If you find a good deal for it and if you need a new cpu, this is the way to go i think, quad-cores are not needed unless all you do is encode.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

Strengths:

Fast, reletively cheap, low heat etc..

Weaknesses:

Not that is a weakness of the processor but not all motherboard design for it will take it without a bios update. May want to have an older 775 processor at hand.

Posted Feb 20, 2008 - This processor is amazing and I was really surprised that Intel decide to go with a mid-end price instead with an high end price though I guess that's what it take to get AMD user to switch :) One thing to be carefull about, not all motherboard that says they are 45u ready will accept this processor unless you update their bios first. To do that you will need to get a older processor first than n update your bios and change the processor to the new one, was worth the effort though.

Outstanding CPU

Strengths:

Fast, stable and easily overclockable at low Vcore

Posted Apr 24, 2008 - I replaced the E6750 with the E8400 3 weeks ago and have been very pleased with the performance of this CPU. Currently I have the E8400 OC'd at 3.5Ghz, but could not achieve anywhere near this with the E6750. Since I use my pc primarily for flight simulation, the E8400 is perfect for running FS9 smoothly.

Posted Mar 6, 2008 - Good CPU for a game system - plenty of headroom to OC. Plugged into GA-EX38-DS4 and runs like a champ. Intel 45nm rocks. Runs cool with Zalman 9700 and uses less power then the old system. A+

Intel E8400

Strengths:

included heatsink won't allow overclocking

Posted Feb 26, 2008 - This is the best bang for your buck CPU ever. I bought mine from ncixus.com for just over 200 on the first day of release and couldn't be happier with it. First off the included heatsink won't work for overclocking since it is so small and can't remove the heat the cpu will make. It will work fine at stock settings if thats all you plan to do with it. I have mine overclocked to 4ghz without any trouble on a Foxconn P35A I bought for 60 after rebate. I have a Intel E6750 heatsink which works fine for cooling at this speed. This chip is awesome for a easy overclock with low heat and power useage with a budget price. For this level of performance AMD can't touch this chip with anything they have.... sorry AMD fanboys...... On the down side etailers have now jacked up the price and you will have to hunt for a good deal as stock is low but that will change soon.

iNTEL E8400

COULD BE FASTER BUT I DONT OVERCLOCK BUT U CAN ALWAS OVERCLOCK THIS CPU TO BE ALOT FASTER.

Posted 1 year ago - GOES REALLY GOOD WITH A MSI P7N PLATINUM MOBO, AND A 9600GT PLAYS ALL THE DX10 GAMES GREAT AT 1440x900 ALL SETTINGS SET TO HIGH. SO THIS IS A GREAT BANG FOR YOUR BUCK CPU!

Posted May 8, 2008 - I had an ASUS P5W-DH motherboard. This came out in summer 2006, and was one of the first motherboards to support Intel's new (at the time) Core2Duo CPUs. The board worked great with my E6600 for 1-1/2 years. I decided to upgrade to the E8400 when they came out, so I updated the BIOS and installed the new CPU. I proceeded to have a slew of compatiblity problems. The temperature readings were out of sight, even with my Zalman CPU cooler. Reading up, this was a problem with many systems. The other issue was lockups and bootups. I couldn't get my Crucial 4-4-4-12 PC2-6400 RAMs to be stable at any speed. I ended up selling the CPU, as it wouldn't work in my system. As a result, I'm not really going to ding the processor, but wanted people to be aware before they go for an upgrade on an existing motherboard. Read up user forums on compatibility of the E8400 w/ the motherboard.

Best Dual Core CPU Out There

Strengths:

Easily overclockable, newest technology,45nm, very cool even when OC'd

Weaknesses:

Hard to find, stock cooler is below average, most boards still report an inaccurate temperature, high FSB (1333MHz) means you need good RAM for large OCs

Posted Apr 6, 2008 - I've been using this for a couple of months now and this thing is so fast. I have gone with a moderate OC from 3GHz to 3.6Ghz with very little voltage increase and can keep the memory at the same speed and timings. The CPU usually idles at around 28 degrees with my Arctic Freezer 7 Pro cooler with both cores at around 39 degrees. Took a few BIOS updates to my IP35 Pro board for the correct temperature to be reported by the BIOS. This is the best processor for gamers and normal users, you will see no increases with a quad core except for in some video editing and your electricity bill. Can't beat this processor for the price.

Great gaming processor

Strengths:

Runs cool, overclocks very well, stable.

Weaknesses:

The demand is pretty high for this CPU, and vendors get away with price gouging.

Posted Mar 22, 2008 - One of the best price/performance CPU on the market today, especially when you are building a gaming rig and have little use for a quad-core. Comes out of the box at 3Ghz, but most can be OCed to 4Ghz with a vcore boost and a decent heatsink/fan. So far no problem :)

Posted Feb 26, 2008 - this cpu is great but i could not get correct temp readings on my asus p5b i guess a future bios revision will fix that in the mean time it was to annoying for a tweaker such as myself so its on ebay now. i think this is the last time i will buy a cpu when it first comes out.

Posted 1 year ago - Great processor for the money. If you're building a PC for gaming or more serious processor intensive tasks, this processor has the best price/performance ratio out there for now. Later, when more apps have been written to take advantage of 4 or more cores, that will change. But for now, this is the way to go. If you take it slow and do your research, you can easily get this processor to 3.4 or 3.6GHz using the stock cooler -- no need for an aftermarket processor cooler. Check the temperature carefully, though. This processor has a reputation for being tricky with temps. In my experience, this reputation is well-earned. Still, it only took me a few hours to get my E8400 up to 3.4GHz using the stock cooler. That's much better than the E8500, at a much lower cost.

Posted May 8, 2008 - This is a great processor that appears to overclock well. Along with a great price. I used to use AMD, and when I first installed this I was shocked to see that Intel has no pins on their cpu's. I never knew that before... I'm not sure if thats a good thing or a negative.
